Whats my next project?

Discussion in 'EntropiaPlanets Wiki' started by EntropiaPlanets, Mar 28, 2010.

  1. OK, so now the VU listing and the Mob listing are are pretty much finished I need some other project. So I am asking you for some idea's. And also these projects can be done by other people that need something to do in game.

So, what info would you like to see completed in the wiki first?

  2. Generally, the wiki needs a rehaul.
It just doesn't look or feel right, It's nowhere near an alternative to entropedia.info at the moment, which is a shame.

Wish I could do something about it rather than helping but I'm more afraid that I'll fuck things up rather than doing something useful.

Well give some suggestions and I'll see what I can do.

Entropedia just has a bit more data on it and because of the charts it might look pretty nice as well, but considering EP wiki is only a few months old you can't compare it with entropedia YET. Lykke, Peter and myself are learning this wiki thing still and we (well at least I am ) are learning every day and figuring stuff out.

But feel free to through any suggestions our way so we know what to work on.

  4. Entropedia is heavily "customized", whereas EP uses the normal wiki software atm.

We have already discussed a way to improve things, the predefined tables entropedia has are way cooler ofc - but this is of lower priority atm.
(We might have some kind of automatically generated templates soon, no ETA on that tho, "someone" has to overcome his nightmares of me breaking the wiki tables  )

Things in the wiki are not easily "fucked up" tho (well, not by simply editing the pages... ), you can always preview your changes and if anything goes wrong you can pretty easily restore the last version of the page, which is one of the cool things in the wiki software!

There are some basic guidelines directly in the EP wiki that help you with "what can be done and how", but i am sure that the internet has lots of tutorials on that, all the wikis out there are using the same software - and there are lots of wikis meanwhile because it's free and easy to set it up w/o being an IT expert.

The charts are the biggest reason entropedia is so useful though. You need to be able to bring up comparisons of everything. Maybe the thing to work on would be to study up or find a good wiki plugin that can do what they are doing over there.

I also think that a single click, one line way of adding data would really be advantageous as well. I really like wikis, and run a couple of my own (my soc's website is a wiki) but it can be overwhelming and too easy to mess up.

I kind of covered my thoughts on it a while back http://www.entropiaplanets.com/forums/showthread.php?t=343

keep up the good work, I wish I had the time to learn and help you out.

Uhm, not really info I like to see completed but maybe...

...you could have a look at the issue I mentioned in the last post of this thread

...there's a chance to template more items, for example a "mob spawn" template to use (nesting!) on mob pages as well as LA pages, or mission pages or...

    and... PM

    thanx!
As I had told you in PM I don;t know about template nesting, but will read up on that this weekend. Thanx for the tip, I will see what I can do.

The difference between entropedia and our wiki is that we use the standard media wiki software (which we run on php / mysql), and entropedia is, like wizzszz stated, heavily customized. Entropedia also runs on ASP.

One problem I noticed while researching on how to get certain things done is that documentation appears not to be the strongest point of mediawiki. I.e. setting up the icon/toolbar and adding a link back to the main site took me down quite a few obscure searches to try and get the info I needed.

I also researched into php grid components for MediaWiki, which would mimic the functionality that Entropedia offers, but have unfortunately not managed to find anything. One problem I have is that my funding is limited, so buying third party components is (at this moment) not really an option. The second problem is getting such components to work properly within the wiki.

In any case, if anyone finds a usefull extension for the wiki, I'll be more than happy to add them. I have to admit I'm not keen on using anything involving flash or iframes, though, from a security-perspective. However, if it would add great value, I'm more than willing to cry like a baby until wizzszz comforts me and removes my fears.

Some of the extensions I would think might be useful:

    http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ArticleComments

I've also been looking at replacing the traditional editor available with something that's a little more WYSIWYG. This seems like a nice option:

    http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/

    Another alternative could be

Feel free to chuck me a PM if you come across anything useful :)

That first one is actually to automatically search data on the wiki?
example; if you use it for mobs, you add the code to search damage types, movement, etc. to add it to the text.

EDIT: it's more like a database
