I love LEGO

While waiting for improvement of my printer I decided to play around a bit with printing LEGO bricks. These bricks are very special regarding dimensions and tolerances. First test was printing four 2x4 standard bricks.


And I succeeded! They fit perfectly to original bricks. Okay, they don't look good because of the visible print layers. Alas, since they are functional at the first try I start to think about very special LEGO models and parts ... Imperium Spec Lancer as for instance ;-)
Holy shit, I can make every "special" LEGO part I want - LOL! And it'll fit to all original parts. Is this cool or is this cool?

Man, this opens fantastic oportunities. Imagine to make your own parts and use them together with original LEGO parts! Since it was so easy to print good parts at the very first try, I will spend more time with it. It's probably way more interesting than prints of online-avatars.

 

Man, I cannot make good photos with my shitty tablet. But be ensured it will not affect your collection. The printed bricks are far away from the quality of original bricks, not to speak about persistence and original colour. So don't worry about your collection but be happy that it's possible to print a missing part that can't be bought anymore.

 

Really? Well, it doesn't look as the creator used non-original parts for me. But I'm a mechanichal engineer. I use CAD-software. I can make every LEGO-like brick you want. And now I know that I can print them as well. And since all LEGO patents expired and LEGO's brand wasn't accepted by European Court (http://www.zeit.de/wirtschaft/unternehmen/2010-09/lego-marke-gericht) I am allowed to do it.

So feel free to ask me wich parts you miss ;-) Could become fun.

Okay, the font isn't correct. Lousy work if you ask me. But it may serve as a placeholder for a future better version ;-)

An interesting move would be to put printed RL heads to LEGO figures. But the quality wouldn't be good. Such heads are 8,2 mm tall only. That means 41 print layers. Pretty rough. So it would be very vague.

 

I don't think that he uses selfmade parts mainly. What I've seen at his website almost everything looks like original parts.

Not bad. New 9.799 and used 11.500 Euro. This could really become the point of start thinking about print the parts at home ;-)

 

LOL! I wouldn't start to print more than 5000 standard bricks in bad quality. One may buy standard bricks and use the construction manual to build the model. All missing parts can be printed if no longer available. But some fools or nerds could do it.

You are right. Unfortunataly I'm not that LEGO-fan. In fact I started this thread because I was surprised by the accuracy of the printed parts. It was the first try and the bricks works pretty good: fit to standard parts in all three dimensions. Really unexpected after all the disapointments of the past. But ...
A few days ago I made the upgrade to Win10. Today my 3Dconnexion SpacePilotPro (3D Mouse) didn't work anymore in my CAD SolidWorks. I decided to install the last service pack. Hurray, the SpacePilot works again but now I can't save my models anymore. SolidWoks crashes everytime. I am still in bad luck. I thought it should change one day. But it doesn't. One success always results in another flop. Whatever I try, it's always the same. Must be my bad karma ...

Does your son still uses LEGO (or even you)? If so, ask him about his ideas and the missing parts and tell me about. I'm pretty sure I will solve my CAD-problem as well as my printer-problem (heater) soon. It's just stressful, time-consuming and unnecessary. I will be able to create and print missing parts again soon ;-)
