This really is getting stupidly good... I mean it must be reaching the point now where there is little point in getting better? Personally, it is always the movement that reveals the uncanny valley for me when it comes to graphics but yeh... crazy stuff.

  2. pores and freckles, etc. have been easy to fake for a looong time now. Hard to believe FF Spirits within came out in 2001, 15 years ago... Not a lot has changed since those early days, except that the software's gotten cheaper so the competition among modelers is more fierce... well and several new algorithms got developed along the way to speed things up a bit (and of course hardware got faster, cheaper, etc.)

Base shapes like eyes have been studied by modelers for a good many years too...

You are right, movement is where it always is revealed usually... There is a LOT going on when a character moves. Even the best animators who study phonemes all the time don't quite get everything 100% dead on... and honestly, if they did it'd just be boring as hell. Why make things more realistic when there's plenty of hd cameras and actors out there... stylized animations are way better in a lot of ways, as they show the unique ideas and personality behind the animator.... If I want a damn photo I'll grab a camera.

Richard Estes wasted a lot of time, even though it's definitely worth your time to see a painting of his up close if you ever get a chance...

IMHO more stylized stuff like Edward Hopper's works are way better since they can be done much quicker and reveal a lot more 'spirit' than some super real type thing...

Wow some effort into that post! I guess yes the comparison between the images I posted and Spirits within is valid. I think the difference is that I presume they render farmed that with the tippest toppest of cutting edge there was, whereas the pics I posted were from a youtube video of a consumer games engine that probably runs on an average home PC. I think the video name is top of one of the pics if you want to check it out.

Its main just some programmers/artists talking about detail in eye and hair rendering. The irony being I looked the game up and it isn't even the sort of game where you look at characters very much.

  4. Hunting for so called "photorealistic" games since 1999.

Always got lured by "improved & modified" pre-rendered-screenshots.

We arent even close, but they are working on it...since 1999 ^^

I was amazed by the 1st Call of Juarez game...and I still am...that was 2006

Well it wasn't exactly what I'd call pre-rendered. I mean they were able to dynamically change the camera position and lighting during the video at frame rate although indeed the face didn't move/animate.

  6. It just feels like, the whole industry got stuck or at least very, very slow, regarding that matter.

haha good one! The bunker sounds like an interesting idea though even without computer graphics. ;)
