    Couldn't resist, sorry!
I have another view from my cockpit meanwhile than many other commanders had or will ever have:

That's because I decided to fly to the center of the galaxy. I started three days ago. I flew ~14k lightyears. 390 hyperjumps at 37 lightyears max. I estimate that's 50-60% of the total distance (forgot to measure it):

You can't do something meaningful there. Everything is too far. There is nothing but stars, planets and moons. No colonisation, no stations where you can trade or repair your ship. It's just to have a look for what Frontier put into this game. So I bought an ASP Explorer, put some very expensive modules into it and pimped the Frameshift Drive a bit. Unfortunately I forgot to install a cargoframe with two planet vehicles. You can re-fuel and repair the vehicles at stations only. But out there arn't any stations ...

At the other hand there are neither pirates nor headhunters. You are simply alone. Lost in space ... Something for folks who love to play boring games. Or even play exciting games in a boring way.

I hope to reach the center within the next three days. Because we are at vacation then for two weeks. For tonight I parked the ship - her name is "DA DUDE" - on an iceplanet:

Very dusty as always on my journey meanwhile.

  2. Would it be possible to build some structures and houses on that planet and maybe even claim the planet for yourself Jamira?

No I don't think so. At least I've never heard about something like this. I like the idea as well. But this planet above is 14000 ly away from civilization. It took me three days to reach it ;-)

That is exciting and sad at the same time. So much lost potential.

To build such a huge 'universe' but not allow the players to colonize and build truly organic trading and supply routes......

To build your own outpost there in isolation 3 days from anything, you would be alone most of the time, but in time become a spot on the map for travelers to stop and resupply and have a drink at your place.

... Once Upon a Time in the West ...
Yes, would be cool to make a claim when you find rare metal on a new discovered planet and build a station.

Close to the end of the journey. 4000 ly left. One of the current views from my cockpit:
    upload_2018-6-8_2-48-0.png
I took a rest and will fly the last few ly tomorrow.

It's really strange. Noone, except a few oddballs like me, will ever visit this places. WTF is it for?

In total it is 26k ly, 717 jumps with my pimped ASP Explorer. Five days with several hours playing each day. Will I fly all the way back? NO! I will blow up my ship by self destruction and hope to be teleported to the next station.

Finally I made it. I landed on a planet in a nice little system.

That's how it looks where I usually operate:
    upload_2018-6-8_18-59-16.png
And here is how it looks in the center at same zoom level:
    upload_2018-6-8_19-0-6.png
Crazy! The smallest distance between two systems I could find was 0,3 ly.

Well, at the end I blew my ship and found my self teleported back to civilization within a few seconds.

Wow what a journey! Well done on completing it so fast too! I didn't realise there wasn't any civilisation there. I assumed they'd have stuff everywhere like in the 80's.

Interesting to see how bright it is there!!

LOL! No, mankind is present at a really small part of the outer rim of the galaxy. 99% is empty. Zero colonisation. And instead of improving colonisation we have a civil war. How stupid!

I wanted to go an play it since I've spent good time with it in the 80's, but beginning to have doubts again. It sure is great and full of eyecandy compared to its origin, but I don't really expect to discover anything new.

And you won't. It's just about flying around with different ships and improve yourself and your equipment. You can mine, craft a bit, trade and - as the title says - become part of a dangerous civil war. I play in single player mode. I don't know nothing about playing together with others. I prefer to avoid conflicts. But I like it as long as I can set personal goals: reach the center of the galaxy, own all kind of ship or tune my engines and shields (usually my ships are not armored). For most players this way to play the game would be boring like hell. Over the time you will see always the same stations and pictures, the planets you can land on are rocky or icy deserts ...

... and on my ride to the center I neither found God nor hints on aliens or such candies. I'm pretty sure that some easter eggs are out there somewhere. But I don't want to search for them. There is an old story about fairy Morgaine:
You must go to the enchanted forest. Probably you may find fairy Morgaine and she will fulfill three of your wishes. But you will never ever find her if you search for her ;-)

Its on sale for $7.50 in steam right now so i got it.
WOW playing in VR is insane!
I have only had time to start the tutorial, but it is very realistic sitting in the cockpit and while there are lots of controls to learn, I think they will be very natural for look and use with the controllers.
It is a natural sit down game since you are at the helm of a spacecraft, so will be easier to play after a long day of work than a more traditional mmo where I would need to be standing up and walking around for a realistic experience.

Yea, I bought it a few years ago already but had serious problems with my Frontier-account. To view Elite in VR was an old dream. Unfortunataly they don't offer it for PSVR. Well, I will try it again via Steam with my Oculus Rift. All I got so far were error messages. Dunno what's wrong with this guys. "Hellblade: Senusa's Sacrifice VR" was running without any problems half a year ago with PS4-controller at my PC. Currently I download Hellblade again to check my system.

And yes: WOW playing in VR is insane!

Yeh I did the tutorial VR demo and indeed it is incredible. Infact folks generally say that Elite is one of the best/natural games for VR.

The thing that really got me was the size of the asteroids. I had similar thing in Entropia too when looking at the hangars - they are really very big.

TBH Elite is an example of pure quality and dedication. The sound is a big thing. The sounds are really good.

That said though it is also very much in the spirit of the original in that it's more like learning a skill or piece of software than a game. There are a lot of interfaces and stuff to learn about. It's pretty complicated but it is worth taking your time to find the right buttons that work for you as regards what does what. For me, I actually got more into the interface than the game.

There is also this player run data network thing (or at least there was). Plenty to get lost in.
