I would like to help, but...

  1. ... the interface is too bad for me. Please don't take this posting as an insult. I just have serious trouble to add my data easily to the Wiki. I already mentioned to Lykke that especially for the loot, I would highly appreciate, if you would work with EUHunter or a similar program to update the database automatically.

Especially for the frequency this would be very helpful.

For me the manual update for loot etc is currently a no-go, it takes longer to add the loot than to hunt... at least for me, plus it's not clear to me where to click etc.

If you have improvements on the process, please contact me and I will add info as much as I can.

    Bye
    Smo

    Hey Smoerble :)
    Help is nice, and needed.

I don't know enough about the wiki (as I told you) to promise any solutions or to guide you. Tass and RAZER however are our wiki gurus, so perhaps they can add something?

    Thanks for your comment!

    You are absolutely right.

3 aspects that will be looked into:

    1. making editing easier, first draft example: the form used for adding news to the future main page
    2. automate things, first draft example: the Random Tip on the future Beginners Portal (as well as the lists on that page)
    3. integrate data from 'external' sources, examples: the MU graph on the Sleipnir Mk 1 page, the boxes in the upper right corner of the vehicles page

However this is a huge load of work and will take a lot of time. Since the wiki is not EP's wiki but the community's wiki everyone is invited to contribute.

The restrictions and obstacles of mediawiki regarding forms, automation and integration of external data don't make the process easier. Fortunately those are more than made up for by mediawiki's advantages.

Especially you, Smoerble, can improve the wiki very easily: ;)

    1. click this
    2. paste <youtube>G6sQtSVf7D8</youtube>
    3. click "Save page"
    4. adapt and repeat with other pages

Any further comments, suggestions, questions appreciated!

Ive had the same concerns. As much as I love learning and helping to contribute, I dont have the time to learn all the syntax or input all the raw data even with the extra syntax needed to make clean tables here.

I did a little googling around and found I wasn't the only one,

    Sandbox - MediaWiki+FCKeditor

is an example of a possible way to do it that someone from here had already been playing with since i recognize the "maturities and stats" sample shown.

I like the way you can edit the table there in the advanced edit mode, a simple right click add row, then fill in the blanks is more what we need for the average user to be comfortable adding information.

Ideally it would be something like that that can be done even with out entering into the edit page, but I don't know if that is doable or not. At least if each table is its own section on the page, that one section can be opened for edit which will only be the one table and not the whole page.

Ideally on the normal page there would be an "add row" button at the bottom of each table which could be clicked on to add a row which could have the blanks filled in with an Add button when the data is entered to actually add it to the bottom of the table.

Another option that would make it alot easier with almost no learning curve would be integrating a spreadsheet instad of tables. Everyone already knows how to use spreadsheets, and it is simpler to enter formulas etc...

    Society Calander - Lost Renegades

is an example of something i started working on last year before I lost interest or ran out of time or both.

All data is vewable from the wiki and editing the sheet is as simple as clicking the edit button to go to the spreadsheet which is shared as a public document.

I wonder if there are similar working extensions designed specifically for mediawiki that wouldn't require storing data outside.

wow i just noticed the pretty formatting to the link on my site, does the forum reformat all links to wikies that nicely? I figured it was just a couple of the entropia specific sites that you had done that with.

It's vBSEO doing that :) It basically looks up the title of the page linked to.

As for the spreadsheet suggestion, it looks doable enough, but I somehow question the process of having to store every table externally. It'd be an administrative nightmare, really. But if the Wiki Gurus see it as a good move, we can certainly give it a shot.

I will make the FCKEditor for the wiki a priority on my tasklist :)

Dont go by anything i say, im sure that razer and tass should have a bigger say in it. Im just throwing out ideas, suggestions and feedback.

Yeah I completely understand why using google docs wouldn't be the best idea, just was using that as an example on how ease of use for the end user/data enterer could be.

I would hope there is some sort of spreadsheet plugin for mediawiki, but i haven't had time for more than the preliminary search i did this morning.

like Admin said, storing every table outside the wiki would be a nightmare on the administrative side. I think the FCKeditor is a BIG step in the right direction. Lets see what happens with that first.

Hi Smoerble. Of course it's not taken as an insult. I am more than aware of the limitations of the wiki editor, and the quircky way it behaves. I actually did raise the issue earlier in our staff room, and we have started making some changes to hopefully make things easier. Like announced, we recently added a major extension called Semantic Wiki, which is a first step towards providing an easier user interface. The FCK editor was also pointed out to me, but I just did not get to installing it.

Thanks for kicking me in the butt so I did not forget it ;)
