Dear Planet Partners....

Discussion in 'General Entropia Universe Discussion' started by RexDameon, Dec 4, 2010.

  1. First of all I've been playing for going on 7 years this December. I've seen a lot of changes, and I've been very patient and hopeful of the future of Calypso and always will be.

I have herd Entropia's business model compared to the micro-transactions of Farmville and how Entropia can be as huge as farmville. I agree this is possible, but a lot would have to change and be added for this to be like there business model.

Farmville works on the fact that it was free and kind of fun, there was a need for neighbors so people got other people to come play with them, and it has this silly collection element much like the hype of beanie babies and that sort of toy had. This in turn created a HUGE playerbase. The key was bringing in lots and lots of people with only a fraction of them actually wanting to put money to get places faster or gain exclusive items.

Planet Partners can do much of the same thing. Partners need to create much more free game play, fun, collection type elements to there planets. I think there has been a strong misconception with developers that people only want to play Entropia to "make money". People want to explore and be part of a story, and have a sense of accomplishment, even if they didn't gain anything of real dollar value.

Entropia is a great platform to accomplish this. Elements in worlds could have great platform game elements. People still like the old platform of try and jump here and find your way through a maze of tunnels, find a item here to be able to get there type of game play. Combine that with the accomplishment of acquiring more storyline or "secrets" to a storyline. You can even have some sort of Medal system like farmville does to showcase your accomplishments. It's like why people grind away skilling up. It's not really that they want to be more efficient it's really that they want to unlock a new professional standing to get a new skill. I'd like to see people having to work together for some of these elements too. I would look to games like Little Big Planet, and the Lego series for ideas.

Also as for getting people excited about your storyline. I would take a look at what Star Wars the Old Republic has got.

Star Wars: The Old Republic | Timeline

It's simple just some concept art with a bit of animation to it and great audio. It's funny i watch this website a lot but i have NO intention of playing it because i can't get past the fact that the graphics and character customization has nothing on Entropia. I also think they will be a subscription based model. But that should show how much more potential there is with building a planet for entropia and doing it right.

I would also not Launch a Planet unless you have missions real things to do without putting any money into the game. Beginner missions explain how to play, and suck them into the storyline. Then they will stay and deposit to do the more active things that will require some PED.

Also Planets need to have they're own separate economy. I don't think you should be able to get any of the same materials on other planets. They're is no draw to stay on a planet if you can get the same items on more occupied and established planet. For example i've been on Rocktropia since it lauched and most people are wanting to go back to Calypso, not because of the gameplay but because they can't sell what items they have to anyone because they're is this huge competing market of Calypso to sell to. The auction fees between planets don't help either. Auction shouldn't even be linked between planets in my opinion.

Also they're are way to many items in the current combined economy. Probably the biggest mistake MA has ever made was introducing way to many items. It makes things very difficult for new players and confusing. It takes away purpose from hunting also. I remember back in the day. If you wanted to make say a shirt. You would go hunt Molisk for the Molisk tooth buttons, and you would get some molisk tooth and maybe 2-3 other items in loot. Then you go hunt like Fuacervix for some Hides. You could also be just a molisk hunter and supply people with molisk tooth to make buttons. Now you hunt moslisk and you will get about 20+ of 76 different crafting items that can be looted. THIS IS THE MOST ANNOYING PART OF THE GAME RIGHT NOW. You go hunt with 100 PED and come back with a couple PED of 30 different items that you now have to try and sell? Individually?

Well thats all i gotta say. Anyone else please feel free to add.

  2. RAZER

RAZER Custom title ... uh ...

from what I understand the new planets will have an economy for themselves without the need of Calypso, so it should work right away.
I also heard from a few partners that there will be missions and vehicles to start with.
And so far the storylines of the new planets are much better then Calypso (well next island doesn't really have one yet, but I really hope it will.

I really like your points. game develepors know the... I'll just call it "collection effect" since diablo. it works. always. the only reason I tried calypsos harbinger event in the first place was the diploma, cause all in all, it was no good. that wasnt enough to care to finish it though...
the only planet partner website that is like an actual game website instead of an infoarchive - or the biggest sin on the internet, an "under construction" notice - is arkadia's. The storyline thingy would work great with their storyline, they have everything ready. except maybe a voice actor ;)

on an unrelated note: your example also made me compare MA and bioware and I had to laugh :D

  4. Rex, first, thank you for the input. I like how you are able to give examples and solutions while posting a problem. That says a lot about your desire to help push the Entropia Universe forward. Please note we are always actively collecting information in various locations (not just EU related) and posts like these help a lot. I think you are correct about EU having huge potential and would like to point out that FPC converting over to Cryengine is one of the most monumental feats in MMO history. That move alone to me says that MindArk is committed to the growing and improving the Platform and I fully share your view.

I see the Planet Partners and MindArk much like Nintendo is the Platform, and Konami and Activision are the Planet Partners. Each might have different ways to go about brining a product to said platform and each is working within the limitations of the platform as well as the many advantages. I think you will be happy to see as more and more Planet partners come in, that each brings something unique to the Universe. What I am happy about is that the Entropia Universe continues to grow and get better. Much like anything else rewards will be had be those who pioneered the way and helped mold the future.

PS thanks for being a Farmville neighbor back when I was "Doing research on it". = )

Kay, Planet Cyrene website has yet to be officially announced or released (press release etc). The fact that EU players have found it does not mean we need to release it if it is not ready or time to do so. We have under construction because it's better to have that then some holding site that is trying to sell you a hotel package or vacation if you are clever enough to look it up. I personally do not see the big sin but can understand the frustration. I hope this clarifies our choice.

    Thanks again for the input.

I understand that you dont want to release something that is not done, I simply think that there should have been a website the moment the game was announced. You say that planets are like individual games, I say that I cant remember hearing of a game, released or not, that didnt have a website I could visit to look up what it's all about. Even major mods have websites. I'm not talking about the full site of a released game, just a teaser. some artwork, some story background, something that tells visitors 'this is cyrene, something great awaits you'.

You have decided to do that via EP and social networks, which somewhat rectifies the lack of a website and is an interesting concept, but only to people that are already playing EU I think. If you dont play a game yet you dont go reading fanmade forums. At least I dont ;)

When I started and saw the planet rooster, cyrene's was by far the most interesting banner. But I couldnt click it. A list with 8 banners and only two had anything to show for it... So you annoyed me before you could get me excited with the stuff I found here :D

I just dont think that's ideal but I guess we'll have to agree to disagree there :)

  6. Kay, You make some great points. But I must say I have not had the same experiences. Being an avid MMO player I can so for a fact that World of Warcraft did not have an official site for several years after it was announced. Conan Hyborian Adventures took 5 years after it was announced, and Warhammer took at least 2 (Possibly 3) before it released an official site, and lastly Huxley might have even heod the record for longest announced no website MMO = ). I really do not think it's that uncommon for large MMO's. We have a strong budget in play for Cyrene, but are definitely not as large as these 3 previous titles, so we humbly ask for some leeway = )

As you pointed out, we have tried to release info despite not releasing the website. Now a days I understand that putting together a simple site is the way to go and I must admit we should have been more diligent. Rest assured we are learning our lessons as we go and will be presenting something soon.

Thanks for the feed back, much appreciated.

You're welcome :) I'm not much of an mmo player, so I wouldnt know, but that list made me laugh, especially about wow :D guess blizzard have been learning too.

deliver that hd image and you get your leeway, deal? :naughty:

  8. Kay i agree with Ed. Look at Next Island it has had a site for a very very long time and i think a lot of people lost a bit of interest. I think Cryene and Arkadia are doing a good job. I Hope arcadia actually will have the shortest time between annoucement and launch. I like what they are doing with there story releaseing a bit at a time. I think it be even better though if they did what star wars Old Republic is doing, because frankly not everyone is a reader like me.

Next Island had an extended 'under construction' notice, not a website. it was 3 (or 4?) pages with NO content. the media page said something like "nothing here yet" until a short while ago. that's a waste of webspace, not a website.

but I do agree that boring/dead websites can do more damage than they may help. their website was actually instadeath for any interest I might have had for next island. good point there rex.

  10. AxeMurderer

    AxeMurderer Master Of Entropia

I will not agree with this.
If every planet have they're own separate economy that mean that you can go to Rockropia, hunt for few months, then go back to Calypso and everything you looted on Rocktopia is useless.
And about that there are too many items. I think that this is the main goal of EU - to have too many items so no one can be self sufficient. Everyone depend on the goods that other produce. You can not build your car alone and your clothes and your weapons. Just like in RL. Game is hard - yes. Game is dificult - yes. There is too much to learn - yes. Game is not for everyone - yes. BUT this is why we all play it.
And I'm not sure you can compare it with farmville, because we are talking of diferent types of people that play those games. Can u say that pointless activities in Farmville with zero dificulty are fun for you?! And 99,9999% of the people playing farmville games wont make it more than a day in EU. And probably the age diference of players is minimum 20 years.

  11. yeah can't wait for the website launch but what Rob wrote sounds very sensible too.

  12. thats comply wrong. what i mean is when you goto Rocktropia you loot rocktropia only items, and those items are then worth bringing back to calypso. Much like how Crystal palace kinda has it's own economy elements because you can loot the Alien parts from the Kretlin and Aurli. Thats why CP is such a success. You can get a few things now on Rocktropia like zombie parts but there should be more Rocktropia only items and less all planet items.

and your spot on for too many items thats what it does makes it so nobody can profit or sell looted items for profit. I know even planet developers agree on this and it HAS GOT TO CHANGE.
