There have been speculations about who bought Calypso and guesses it was SEE Virtual Worlds. Let's look at the facts as well as the gossip.

    Information on the sale:

From MindArk's Annual Report 2009 (Swedish), translated to English by Google:
Translation of a another section from MindArk's Annual Report 2009 (Swedish):
    From MindArk's Semi-Annual Report January-June 2010:

    Food for speculations:
    • SEE makes a scecret out of who is the actual developer of the SEE planets, the only information so far is to be found in the article Planet Michael: What would MJ say? MMO News - Page 1 | Eurogamer.net:

  2. SEE has 20 planets somewhere in between initial negotiatios and development, according to their handout. If this is the case, their pockets may well be deep enough to buy FPC. I just hope it doesn't wind up like the SEE Star Trek exhibits, which ran into some nasty financial issues a few years back.

where does the 20 planets come from? thats an awful lot. does it not strike you as mutually exclusive that SEE has the fund, yet had financial issues recently?

the rumour still doesnt stack up for me.

  4. RTFIPG, aridash. It's in there.

    SEE's "Illustrated Planetary Guide

Note that I said between initial negotiations and development. Personally, I don't think they'll have that many planets up as I agree that's alot. However, SEE says otherwise in their handout.

They don't have to develop them all in one go. I think their plan is to develop them over a number of years one after the other. Which could work...

  6. Maybe See did indeed bought a big share in FPC and hired them as developers for their planets aswell. And if See has a bit more to say then they can direct some more devs to claypso and other.

Thats what i'm thinking too. Would be good for calypso and new SEE planets. Interesting times ahead but what doesn't make sense is why they never announced who it was like they said they would. Perhaps the deal fell through or never got finalised? Doesn't really make much sense why they decided to keep the good news hidden ...

  8. Well I think it is just a share transfer and not FPC being sold to See. See just to part of the shareholder so that they can have a bit more control witht he developing of planets. Because if you are launching more then 10 planets wont you hire a company that already has some experience with the engine? ND studios is doing great but FPC has more experience with the whole RCE ofc.

  9. If they need a designer/developer they could just contract FPC, they don't need to buy FPC.

If you want to go out for a meal tonight, you probably wouldn't start by trying to buy a restaurant.

I'm with Ari on this one, it doesn't make any sense for SEE to buy FPC, certainly not in this early stage of their involvement with EU.

I think we may be missing the mark here, because the sale information said ... "all rights to the planet Calypso" ... not the sale of FPC, so that's a bit different than buying the company. Not sure what all that entails, but I don't think FPC was bought.

  11. True they dont but they can get revenue from FPC also (which is still the biggest planet ) and then they wont have to compete that much with Calypso as revenue from there pays the other planets ...

More companys work this way also. Also FPC has the advantage of being close and in the same time zone of MA ofc. One thing ND studios is at a disavadange big time (they even admit that)

glad you qualify that, as they only say twenty titles "in the pipeline". the pipeline could be only a contact has been made, an internal wish list or what they thought of on the way to work that day.

  13. I don't understand what motive there is for not declaring publicly who the buyer is, unless the deal is not done yet.

What if SEE buy the rights to calypso then are in turn bought out by someone else? :headscratch: That would be bit of a pickle and cause for delay ;) oh what if that someone else is FPC lol They buy rights or shares in each other bit like two companies getting married :D

  15. The MA annual report mentioned a payment schedule that runs through mid 2011. It may be that an announcement cannot be made until some financial milestone has been passed on that schedule. If I had to guess, I'd wager it's the 50% mark of the total sale price, but that's sheer and utter speculation on my part.

  16. I'm not an investigative reporter but I can't understand why getting this information would be such a challenge. If you read any financial newspaper companies and deals are made all the time. The "who" bought what is the reason why these things are reported. Companies buy other companies to build the market presence and the value of their market share. If what you are buying doesn't do either of these things for you, why would you do it? MA never seems to hesitate to announce deals (even ones that seemingly never existed) before the ink is dry. Why would a company like SEE Global Entertainment not do the same.

All this hush hush by MindStar frustrates me. Lets hear what you know hon. If the specifics can't be reported at this time then say something like, "Speculation by others...blah, blah, blah the buyer is..." Then get on the horn to Pam Pearlman or Paul Laing at SEE and get an exclusive interview with some concrete facts. chop chop ;)

  17. If the rights to the planet were separated from the company, FPC would no longer have any source of income, so I don't think that makes much sense either.

I kinda thought that myself, but then after reading the words used about the sale, it made me wonder.

Guess we'll find out when they decide to announce it.

  19. Say MS9 gave me this idea actually.
    1. It is stated in MA annual report
    2. Sale of Claypso rights

So Mindark is selling their rights in claypso to another party (SEE world perhaps) but this can also be a forgein investor for FPC that wants a bit of ensurance.

financial papers are full of deals between publically listed companies, which have to announce deals according to local regulations, or comapnies so large there is a wide interest in them. normal private companies are of no interest and have no legal reason to release info.

i think MS9 has revealed what she knows, the same speculation as here. it is a good idea to go interview those involved at SEE and see what they say about it, i wonder if anyone will take up the suggestion?
