Awesome find. Will have to read more about FoldIT. Great, something else to divert my attention from lawn duties.
Well the nice thing about the folding project is that you do not have to do anything. The program runs as your screensaver when you PC is otherwise idle. Tried it once, but never reinstalled it after I got a new computer.
I happened to be wearing my old SETI@home shirt while shopping the other day. To my suprise the clerk at checkout recognized the logo, and mentioned that he was playing foldit. Steampunk be damned, there's still a place in the world for cottage-industry science! :)
Actually you do have to do something ;) This is not like the SETI@home project, where you lend your spare CPU cycles to the program. You actually have to solve puzzles. The program then analyses how you solve certain problems and improves its AI. In this case the puzzle was solved by humans, but in the future - as the AI gets better - computers will be able to solve them themselves.
