OK so bit of a random one. I just received in the snailmail today a regular spam from my credit card company (Natwest) offering me 0% APR on "balance transfers". Now, I really know nothing of this sorta thing (I'm assuming Natwest essentially "buy my debt" and charge me nothing on it for 1 year to say thanks?) since I usually bin them outright (no need for 2 CC's after all so no balances to transfer). Anyhow a thought occurred this time, so here's the idea: Get another (new) credit card and max it out by depositing a shed load into Entropia which I then invest in Land Deeds. Then, transfer the outstanding balance (debt) to my Natwest credit card and pay 0 interest on the debt for 1 year. In the mean time, hopefully I get 27-30% ROI from MA on the deeds. At the end of the year I then clear the CC debt with my own money (cause MA are slow on withdrawals) and sell off the land deeds at a fraction of MA's price (say I dunno, 950peds a deed [95%]). Once done, I set up a withdrawal and hopefully within 3 months I'll have ~122-125% of the cash back.* Does this sound like a possibiliy? or am I (almost certainly) missing a vital point/clause/"show stopper" somewhere? As an initialy guess, I'd say the potential foot falls would be: - The ped loss to MA on the initial transfer/deposit into Entropia - Potentially unfavourable changes in exchange rate between US Dollar and Sterling - Difficulties selling the deeds to other players after 1 year (even when undercutting MA) - Other players selling their deeds first, hence a price drop** - The deed ROI being "not as expected" - The loss of potential RL interest while peds sit in "no mans land" waiting for withdrawal - MA's cut on withdrawals*** Any others? Its pretty unlikely I'd do something like this anyway as its already sounding damn risky as it is and I'm not really much of a wheeler dealer tbh. Still, I thought it might make an interesting discussion if nothing else. There must be some people at least who are investing in these deeds to bring in real "take home" cash (rather than say, just bring in enough peds to "play for free" each month - the kind of thing I'd consider) I'd appreciate any thoughts. Even if you just tell me I'm an ijiot ;) Cheers Wistrel PS I expect there's probably some small print with the CC companies too which might stop me running up a huge debt on a new card then instantly transferring its balance.... either that or some other small print that prevents me from instantly paying off a balance after 1 year at 0% APR hence stopping Natwest from making any money off me.... or is that the risk they run by buying debts... and its something I am free to do if I so chose? * - Can you ask MA to stick deposits directly into a bank account (rather than them crediting them to your credit card) ** - If ROI isn't as expected for example (for whatever reason) people may start trying to sell their shares. And with a poor ROI there may not be much call for them... *** - Anyone know what this is?
With a bank transfer deposit there is no fee other then the fee your bank might want from you. Checked it on Dutch banks and there is no fee for transfers in European banks. Exchange rate from US$ to Sterling, well that is a factor and potentially a big one, so you might wanna invest your money at a smart time, when the rate is good (is that a low dollar or a high dollar, always mix that up Well that's a risk you will have to take Well that's a risk you will have to take The ROI well it was very low this week, so you can never tell where that is heading. RL interest, that is something you will need to take in account, but that like 2-3% max. I believe that withdraw is 1% with a minimum of 100 PED
All depends on what you think is going to happen. Once you have a projection of what you think is going to happen and feel confident about it you can draw up plans accordingly. It all comes down to your own assessment and confidence. For example once I felt confident hangar buildings would have a purpose and bought some. Based on that confidence but now I'm not so sure. So do i sell? buy more? hold? I'm not sure anymore. MA do have a habit of surprising us. Who would have predicted they are going to come up with this Land Deeds in the first place? Certainly not me, just appeared out of the blue one day :-) Having said that once Land Deeds are all sold out. In principle I think they are a good investment better than most investments and better than a lot of Land Areas. So in theory since they are such a good investment once all are sold I would say their price is likely to rise because demand will be higher than availability. People selling them will be the ones who want quick peds for hunting etc. People who have jobs and deposit are always looking for investments. Hence these types will outweigh the sellers, therefore a price increase. There will also be market manipulators at work. Who are likely to be owners ramping up the price, this even happened when MA first released Land Deeds I found it astonishing they had a markup since there were thousands to be sold yet. So what do i know :)
George yeh Az has been talking a lot lately about what happens when all deeds are sold. He was speculating the other day about if 60k deeds is enough for liquidity of the market or something. I think he meant, is it enough for there to be enough buying and selling to promote healthy trading as one sees with real life shares. He made the point though that, as far as MA are concerned it doesn't really matter. If the retrade price bombs after the initial sale MA still made 6million bucks. If it doesn't, then they stand to make even more money as people deposit more to pay inflated prices for resold hand deeds. I'm trying to get Az to come in here and talk with his ideas anyhow since its a receptive crowd. He's posting some interesting numbers on a dead forum though at the moment (sorry Az). Still I know what you mean about randomness of MA. I remember discussing PE with my dad once and he said something like "well MA could send a cyclone through and destroy someones land of building if they wanted to". My reply of course was that they WOULDNT want to cause that would ultimately hurt them too if only by reputation. That said though, this wasn't really my aim in this thread. Theres another pretty good one about deeds and investments etc. What I was trying for here was a thought experiment about how much one could ACTUALLY make in cold hard cash (Pounds Sterling) if they were to try and pull off something like the above. This is because there has been a LOT of discussion about how "good" the investment of deeds is WITHIN the game but how good is it in reality? Say if you had a 1 year plan or a 3 year plan for example and how would that compare to say, a real life share investment or an ISA over the same time period. Obviously there are assumptions involved (eg the 27-30% projected ROI) but I was hoping some more financially/law informed people could help out with the more predictable or factual numbers such as how much sterling to US$ exchange is likely to fluctuate or what the actual charges are with deposits and with drawals. (I admit this is partially cause I'm lazy ^_^) I did read from the other thread though that withdraws as far as MA are concerned are charged at 1% or 100ped (whichever is the larger). As regards deposits, I think I get something like 192 peds for every 20$ deposit with my credit card so there is obviously SOME charge there. The amount this costs me in real life varies depending on exchange rate I think. Wistrel PS oops just spotted razer posted about the 1% thing already. Re deposits... are you saying if I stop depo'ing via credit card and change to a bank card I will get 200ped per 20$ deposit rather than 192ped???? If so... DOH!!!! >_<
One thing to watch out for with the 0%apr balance transfers is the transfer fee itself. I got caught in that a couple of times when I was younger. 6% transfer fee for a 6month 0% apr = 12% Not saying you wont find a good deal, just that they can hide stuff like that so that its less obvious unless your looking for it. narfi
The plan itself is an intresting one. Ultimately if it succeeds or not depends really on what price you'll sell your deeds at. Maybe it'll be intresting to find out the price you need to sell at to break even. The other intresting thought experiemnt twould be to figure out a worst case scenario. Say worst case scenario everyone leaves Calypso and goes to Cyrene. How much money would we make for Calypso then and what would the ROI be in such a scenario. How would this affect the deed price? Also to work out a good case scenario. Say MA marketing is successful and they bring in their projected new players to calypso. What would Calypso's income be then? How would that affect the deed prices? The truth may be somewhere in the middle of those two extremes.
Yeh the question of the value of the shares post total sell out is an interesting one. I'm always reminded of Anshe's Dreamland stock exchange fiasco Where we all lost our money. The problem there was that they never delivered n their ideas/promises. Ashe's bank never paid interest and the cross game currency trading was "stopped" by MA. Essentially it turned into a rather cunning way for Anshe to regain cash on her investment from the players. The same could happen with the deeds on calypso however this seems less likely when they are actually earning money. I wouldn't hold my breath on MA's so called advertising efforts this year either. An exodus to Cyrene might be a problem... I don't know but again I'm already starting to feel it won't be the second coming we've hoped it might.
I'm sorta worried about this. There are tons of people trying to rid of their land deeds with some difficulty ever since the deeds were released. However, after they all get sold out it may be different.
Well, whatever you call every minute in Twins you see someone spamming trade chat for selling Land Deeds...
Not aware of the Anshe fiasco. Must have been when I took a long break from the game. Was it anshe's scheme or MindArks? If it wasn't MindArks or endorsed by MindArk we can't really blame them for it. Do you have more details on this? links or something ?
I always intended to write about the Anshe thing for a mag but never got round to it. Would probably be safe to talk about a little "incident" I had with them too ;) I'll see if I can come back here this week with time to explain what happened with DSE. Crue I would say thats a reasonable number of people. I wonder why they want to sell? Just to free up peds maybe? or perhapse they were impatient and bought a larger lot number than they wanted as the lower amounts had sold out? Dunno. Certainly don't expect to see a massive change in price till they are all sold anyhow and with only 1/3rd gone, I can't imagine the rest flying off the shelves too fast.
I would imagine that perhaps some people bought a bunch of them on the premise they would soon be gone, or because they were under the impression that they would receive a 30% dividend every single week. With neither of those being the case, perhaps they are getting cold feet? Just an idea.
Well you get deed sellers for different reasons: - Resellers. They see an opportunity at selling for profit on auction or private and take it. This happened at start not sure if it's still the case. - Some buy then realise they need more peds for hunting/mining/crafting etc so convert deeds back to peds - Some may have bought misunderstanding what they are buying - Some buy then see the returns is a few peds. Then think 1k peds is better than 5 peds - Some may simply have changed their minds etc etc Probably have more reasons than people selling them :-) Going back to this idea itself. It really does depend on Cyrene and what they do. We know Calypso is much stronger than any existing PP. Will Calypso still be strong after the release of Cyrene? This will inevitably decide the value of calypso deeds. Calypso being the oldest planet and having a fully working economy is to it's benefit. In my mind once Cyrene is released either Calypso will still be the strongest or Calypso & Cyrene will both be equally strong or Cyrene will be the strongest and Calypso second strongest. In each of these possibilities Calypso will have a good value and hence I think deed prices will become higher than their original price. When Cyrene is released we may get more sellers again for various reasons but many will be selling because they see others selling i.e. I reckon panic selling will ensue. This may be the golden opportunity to buy because prices may dive if the panic selling is on a huge scale. Since the underlying reasons for deeds is a good one and Calypso is likely to still stay strong and Calypso Deed prices will then rise again. As mentioned above I reckon higher than their original price. There is also the possibility of hidden or surprise factors that may alter something. We can't say without knowing what PP are planning to do. PP's and MindArk are the one's who will have more information and so will be able to make better predictions. One thing is for sure I get the impression the Calypso development team/MindArk are rattled by Cyrene and seem to be working extra hard on Calypso. This is good essentially competition between PP's should be of benefit to us. I suspect we will see some good improvements for Calypso as they work extra hard to keep us on calypso.
Interesting points above and I expect you are right... it may be a little like the hangars before space. No one knew if they would be served up a turkey or a hamster. Some probably sold speculatively because. Others bought. As for if hangar owners did well in the end I would say the jury is still out. Shame that hangars themselves have no use though... other than looking cool that is. I agree there may well be a panic sell but as for returns it seems ok so far. We have seen that stuff like christmas and the merry mayhem can significantly alter returns. No one should have expected identical returns each week though. There is bound to be an initial if not prelonged drop when cyrene goes live. The only way to avoid this is to have a mega release on calypso in the same vu. As for MA being rattled over cyrene and polishing up Calypso I havn't really seen much evidence of that (but then again I am on RT for the last few months). There was an odd comment from Kim and well the obvious that in theory MA should worry about a company that has enough spare coppers to make models of their game mobs. Says money no object a little really. Of course MA win out regardless now as even though they didn't get to "sell" calypso as they initially tried they've more or less managed that now. It isn't out of their hands of course since they still need to make content for it but financially I'd say they have cleared things with the deeds. If Cyrene does well MA does well also. As you say though its unlikely Calypso will bottom out cause of a shiney new planet - too many people rooted there. I actually find I really miss the place. After 7 years feels like home. Wistrel's random musings.
I would say the release and first weeks of Cyrene will be the most interesting period in Entropian history. It might ultimately show whether the Planet Partner concept will succeed or fail (and as a consequence give an direction for the value of CLDs). I hope for the first but I fear the latter.
Hi, I'd not think that even a successful start of Cyrene will depopulate Calypso. Several reasons: Cyrene will be much smaller, I'm very sure. Cyrene will not (yet) have a lot of the special features that atm. are still Caly-only. I bet all of my caroots that Cyrene will be forced to start without all features readily implemented, we all know how fast & reliable the MA coders are ... Regarding the experiences of Arkadia, it will take ages until the unavoidable balance corrections on Cyrene will be done, the fine tuning of the economy. We have seen the start of Arkadia, and it was done in a most professional way; I can not see any major mistakes the team has made, and still it took months to get this planet rolling. And still there's some core functionality not ready yet - functionality that has to be made by MA, the PP cannot do much itself. I have a lot of trust in the Cyrene team, from what I have seen until now they might be able to do as well as the Arkadian team. Well, they additionally could capture some relatives of high MA people to hold them ransom, and to torture 'em as soon as MA isn't delivering in time ... Calypso might again suffer a small initial hit in the number of participants, but will compensate this soon with sucking away new players from Cyrene, too. What I think is more important a question: What will happen to NI and RT? Judging from the numbers I see they are severely endangered meanwhile, and any other loss of players may make them go haywire. And what would happen to the EU (as a whole) if yet another Planet Partner, or even two, bites the carpet? And so, as Tass mentioned, it might ultimately show whether the Planet Partner concept will succeed or fail. A fail might be the end of the EU as we know it, MA would suffer such amounts of bad publicity! The SEE story would be revived, the castle, the CEO Jojo, and there's enough other corpses in the basement so that any journalist could make an exciting story of it. Maybe some other company might buy the shattered remains, so maybe this wouldn't be the worst to happen ... Finally a question: To my knowledge you need to be on Calypso to receive your weekly deed payout, right? This alone would make them useless for me, if this information is correct. Burning precious game time for looong space travels each week, with the additional costs of flying, would eat up my share profit. Have a good time!
Cyrene will be small to start with that's been confirmed by Ed. Don't need to be on Calypso to receive payment. If your on any planet you can see payments in ped flow centre. In space you cannot see ped flow centre or receive payment message but it's still paid to you. When you land on any planet you can look at ped flow centre and see payment was indeed made.
Kinda nice you robbing calypsians whilst on another planet (ofc i wouldn't do that myself, i just guessed it's like that)
Hi, Thank you for the clarification, seems I was told something wrong. At least now I know better, I've learned something new Thx again, have a good time!
