Tomorrow Star Wars: The Old Republic will be released officially (in America, Europe will be 2 days later). Personally I don't like the Star Wars setting in general. Sword & Sorcery as a main element of a science fiction setting, technologically advanced beyond intergalactic spacetravel for thousands of years but laser canons seem to have the accuracy and hit rate of rate of early muskets, etc, etc, that doesn't really work for me. However, the sheer numbers are impressive, fx voice-overs of 1000+ different actors, more pre-orders before launch than EU has registered accounts in its whole 10 years history. If I had the time I would check it out. If you give it a try please share your experience with us.
I played the Beta test they had one weekend around Thanksgiving time...I have to say the game was way better than anything I could have expected. There were a few minor bugs I encountered but ofc that's what the Beta is for. Almost every questline has it's own cut-scene and story line equipped with unique looking NPCs that issue the quests (I didn't make it too terribly far into the game as I had not much time to play my 2-3 day test). There are social points you have to earn as well which makes teaming and interacting with your fellow players more necessary than other RPGs I've played. I was able to complete pretty much everything with the help of my companion when I reached level 9, there was only one quest I had to join a party for. It was definitely a neat experience as when you're in the cut-scenes for missions their avatars interact instead of just yours only and you can see how their dialogue choices affect the scene. If you like either of the Knights of the Old Republic games, it's pretty safe to say you're going to like this. The combat system is similar aside from being able to pause and set up commands since you're in an MMO. This is definitely a game I will be picking up in the future to play.
1 day after launch, 200+ server online (http://www.swtor.com/server-status), estimated up to 1.5 Million players, and Europe launches today...
I tried Star Wars the Old Republic over a test server weekend, I liked it enough to buy the deluxe edition, hehe. The game is great, it's a nice change from a lot of games out at the moment. In the old republic the storyline plays a major part, there's a lot of history and considering that the story takes place 3000 years before Darth Vader and all that it's really kind of interesting and fun. Whether you play a republic or empire character you make light side and dark side choices throughout the game by how you respond when talking to a mission npc, which adds another aspect to the game. There are pve, pvp, rp-pvp and rp-pve servers so no matter what you want to do you have lots of choices. Team pvp events go on all day with 3 different random instances you will enter and you can get gear using the reward tokens. I have been playing since the early release and if the fun keeps up I'll keep playing for a long time to come.
If it weren't *yet* another subscription game, I would be playing it right now. I'm already paying for another game, and can't afford this now :/ Though I've played the beta and really enjoyed it.
My friend was dead keen on playing this. He told me last night he has already cancelled his subscription. He says he found it was too much like WoW (which he played for 7 years) but also that he felt like he was playing in a box rather than in a large world he could independently explore. I'm going to go take a look tonight before his account expires next week. I loved starwars so think I will like it. I think he is probably just having an MMO disolusionment tbh. Wist
Taking a little break from swtor, hehe. I never played WoW, honestly that game never interested me one bit. From what I have heard of WoW the leveling is so fast that it's not even fun. I don't think that starwars the old republic is comparable to WoW other than people that play/played WoW were offered a deal for swtor so there are people that play WoW that also play swtor. I don't think WoW has any kind of storyline of any consequence, in which the storyline plays a huge part of swtor. If you aren't interested in a storyline and you just want to go around and kill mobs there are probably better games out there. There is more than enough to do in swtor so I don't know why someone would play the game for less than a month and quit, I can't say that I'm sorry to see them go. There are a ton of servers to play on, none of them are full anymore, all the "flake" players left. If you want to start playing a game to level as fast as you can that's your choice and with swtor you can do that but if you want to have the fun that swtor offers at least do the class missions. I played quickly with a guy yesterday, he cut through the storyline so fast that I stopped playing with him, well,, each to their own. Starwar the Old Republic is a great game, might not be for everyone but I am enjoying the game a lot even at level 50 and there's a lot to do that I don't even know about yet. And to answer kiri's question, I am on the black vulkars server and the name of my character is Harvar (made up a name quickly, hehe) and he's a jedi consular, level 50.
I had a look... yeh had some nice parts to it. We went to Hoth and Nar Shadarr (much to cries from my friend of ARE YOU INSANE??? We'll be killed!) I think he was being a little harsh on it. I liked the talking mission people and things. I think though it made me want to jedi knight 2 again though mainly....
I am playing it, at level 20 now. Actually it's the first mmorpg besides EU that i have realy played and not only tested for a short time. It's pretty fun, but for a player like me that are not found of doing group missions it gets a bit problematic with the many group missions. Well, it's a mmorpg game so i guess it's may own fault :) Also, sometimes a bit boring with the many similar missions. When you play games like SWTOR, you also miss some of the freedom you have in EU, EU are very powerful as a world. If MA and the planetpartners could combine the EU system with some of the best stuff, like missions and NPC in SWTOR and similar games, EU could get great.
I had a go of this last week using my sisters account. I was pretty blown away by it really. It doesn't feel much like an MMO to me - it feels like a single player Star Wars franchise game with multiplayer bolted on. This turns out not to be such a bad thing though, as you have many of the advantages of a single player game with the fun of multiplayer. The thing that amazed me more than anything else is the sheer amount of content. Seriously, it can't be economical to make MMOs this way!? I personally don't think they have pushed the boundaries of multiplayer gaming, and especially MMOs, as this seems to have been developed with other goals in mind. As an advocate of MMO technology, it's a little disappointing, but then I have no idea what's going on at the back-end to comment on this. I definitely won't be buying myself a copy, but it doesn't stop me being impressed with the achievement. I am definitely not feeling the love when it comes to modern multiplayer games... They all seem less and less appealing to me, not that I have any time for them anyway!
Hi, have played WoW for some years, maybe I'm able to clarify. Disclaimer: Played together with my life companion, and we have played quite some other MMO's before. So we mostly played together, with a lot of different avatars each, we had the full range of faction, race, role (warrior, rogue, priest etc.) and crafting.Since we're not this young anymore we rarely played with random groups, the hectic the todays youngsters seem to need wasn't exactly what we loved. :)This way we never really met the "end game" (boss instances). Well, it was fun. WoW is, technically seen, by far the best MMO that I ever played. And I have tried a lot. Movement, camera and control responsiveness is great beyond good and evil, imagine you can run into a certain direction chased by a mob, jump, turn in the air, shoot at it halfways in turning, finish the turn, land and run further in the same direction, without losing speed. Try this in EU ... Then, even with the comic-like graphics, it's very immersive. It looks and feels "real" after a while - even the cow (tauren) over there, in abstruse crazy armor, wielding a huuuuuge sword, shooting green rays at you. After all you may be a tiny cute looking being (gnome) with 2 huge daggers, able to stun it for long times, and able to vanish from sight in a whoosh. The world is very well designed, even remote and unused areas contain a lot of funny gimmicks - like the old EU with those skeletons and funny messages, just more of it, all over the place. We have spent literally days in game time just trying to get low level chars into high level areas, just for fun, or trying to explore even the most unaccessible areas. A lot of fun to have, we loved this. We loved to play the auction house, using allowed 3rd party addons to determine the best prices, and "farming" stuff that was in need, and would sell well. We left after more and more emphasis was put into the instanced boss raids, and organized PvP, things that we didn't want to join. The majority of the game became more and more "easy goin", tailored for even more "casual players" then we have been already, and the steady changes in the skilling system, requiring making new spec's for every single char over and over, made us leave this game finally. Nevertheless I'm still sure that WoW is a landmark in the MMO area. Blizzard has shown what's possible, and to my knowledge nobody yet hasn't even scratched the crown they earned. There might be better games now, there might be games more appealing for one player or others, maybe even we'll see MMO's more successful once in a future - but WoW still has, IMHO, earned the price for "the first really good MMO". I'd so much love if the MA developers would have a look at it, and would at least try to copy the movement/ control responsiveness code ... Have a good time!
Been saying that for years. And its not like they don't have the tech now either. They even have voice missions on RT and sounds triggered by your location in an environment.
"like the old EU with those skeletons and funny messages, just more of it, all over the place. " Wish MA would listen to stuff like this. They really took away the character with vu10. and worst of all there was no need to remove anything. They said initially they couldn't import stuff from the old game but clearly they cracked that one in the end (or we would not have Zych still)..... hmm I wonder if one PP could outsource from another. ND studios could be hired for a short time to put the EU character back (the skeles the wreckage the tower and so forth) which would be good. They did a good job at that sorta thing on RT after all. As for movement its ok as it is. At least we have some element of the terrain/animation adjustment from crysis. Still needs work though and the ability to blink/make facial expressions or sit down would be something at least Wistrel
