The stuff that I miss about Entropia Universe ...

Well I have mentioned this before in various places and on numerous occasions, but I thought it might be a good idea to make an article out of it.

So, to make the sentence of the article title complete

"... is the fun and unexpected stuff we had before VU10"

Unfortunately I can only compare the planets as they are now to Calypso pre VU10, because that was the only planet back then, but this article goes for all the planets.

By the fun and unexpected stuff I mean stuff that is mostly useless pieces of the planet just sitting there for no apparent reason. They were not mentioned in any release statements and were given no explanation by MindArk, they did however causes wild speculation about why they were there.

These days most of the new stuff we get is mentioned in the release notes and is basically not a surprise when people discover them. This goes for items being discovered and locations on the planet being discovered. This takes out some of the reason I started to play this game in the first place, almost 8 years ago.

Back then there was a sense of adventure amongst the players, trying to get from one TP to the next and sometimes taking hours or days to get there, discovering fun and unexpected things along the way. These days you just hop in a VTOL or some other vehicle and you are there in a matter of minutes, without any danger or problem. The only place where I had a bit of the feeling back I had when I started was Ancient Greece, but there are so little creatures and TP's there that it is not a real challenge, just a boring long time to get from one TP to the next.

I know there are a few fun and unexpected things out there on different planets, but nowhere near as much as I'd like to have. Some examples of stuff that is in game right now, but they all seem to have a purpose, so not really the useless fun things we had before.

I also remember to have seen some treasure chest in a cave on Next Island and there are the ruins on Arkadia and from these examples the Treasure Chest on Next Island is probably the only useless thing.

As an example of the things I mean when I talk about useless things:

So, I guess what I'm trying to achieve with this article is for the Planet Partners to bring back some of the excitement of discovering new stuff, both as items and as 'stuff' on the planet. Don't mention everything in the release notes, put in some new mob or gun and let people discover them for themselves. Not everything has to have some kind of purpose, giving stuff no purpose at all might be a purpose on it's own, for sparking fantasy and creativity amongst the players in creating their own story behind a item or location.
One of the best example of this is of course the infamous Egg looted from an Atrox Queen for no apparent reason, which is keeping the imagination of the players going for years now (Ahhhh, the Egg)

I do, of course, understand that stuff like this cost money and time to do and has no noticeable return when it comes to money, but I do think that stuff like this keep people interested and amused and therefor keep them in the game, spending money.

  3. I may not be as old and grey haired as some of you others out there, but I do have 3 years on my neck within EU. What I miss the most is pre-vehicles. I joined EU a few months after the implementation of CryEngine, and the most fun I ever had in this game was running from TP to TP, preferably with my unofficial mentor (who has quit the game) or some random I met in the game, while hunting. A favorite memory of mine is when I ran from Twin Peaks to Jason Centre, trying to survive those blasted argos best I could. Other favorite memories: swimming far, far, far to reach New Switzerland and being amazed by its beauty, or when I finally reached Fort Ithaca also through swimming and died several times before a nice guy in uber (to me) Gremlin armor saved me as the hero he was and made sure I came safely to my TP.

Arkadia should implement much better ruins, like religious symbols, texts written upon stone, and so forth. The only word I can think of when it comes to Arkadia's ruins is "soulless" - perhaps the second word could be "boring".

Overall I do agree with you. EU becomes dangerously boring without the small stuff.

From what I have heard form the Arkadia Team is that, now that the stuff they wanted is in the game, there might be a little more time to do stuff I suggested. Lets hope they will.

Finding those little gimmicks indeed was one of my favorite activities in-game as well.

There were tons of such locations, like Cape-On-Smiling, the smiley at the very south tip of Eudoria, or the remains of the huge battles fought between humans and robots, like the one near Zychion, and the one near the PVP zone.

Other than that, I also greatly enjoyed just running around, and finding little hidden gifts left by anonymous colonists. I recall sneaking into the houses in Mino, or the abandoned mine near Twins, and finding that others had been there before me and left some small items (usually PECs or PEDs). I often left little things there as well, hoping that whoever would find them would get just as big a kick out of it as I did when I'd discover a little hidden treasure.

I also agree that vehicles kind of take the fun out of the exploration. Collecting all TPs used to be a lengthy process, as well as a learning experience. I remember trying to run from the then Sweat location Camp Phoenix to Zychion, and getting butchered by Molisks. Later, attempting to run from Zychion down to Troy and getting mauled by Troxes. It really taught newbies the range at which specific MOBs could see them, and served well to build up some defensive skills and evasive tactics. Additionally, when it turned out to be too hard to do solo, it often led to random players teaming up to fight their way to the next TP, often starting a new friendship.

The best part was that such discovery trips cost nothing, and thus provided a nice alternative bit of fun whenever the ole PED-card was empty.

  7. Lolz :) I used to find useless things before VU10 as well. The weirdest one I found was a huge black box looking like a tower-pc on this island W of eudoria that I bumped into by fluke in a hovercraft.

OK was remembered about this thing on another thread:

    picture.jpg

One of the useless things we had in EU before VU10. Wild speculations were going around amongst the people that had seen it and we never got to know what that thing was doing in the middle of the desert.

I WANT STUFF LIKE THAT BACK IN THE GAME and for god sake don't mention it in the release notes or mark it on a map !!

Good thread... I remember there was a house that I think had something to do with the notes story.. someone had left a little offering there too :D

I DO miss the battles scared littered feeling of Calypso and the dino skellies etc.

The occasional interesting pile of rocks
Those little bits of love were the fun.

While I feel the ark ruiins could do with a little more attention to detail they are not bad. I'm exploring that planet at the moment and found a cool ruiin on a hill while on a mission. I climbed up to it and found massive skeleton bones so big I could camp for the night in a skull ! only I couldn't cause some prat made them un-walk-into-able despite the hole being big enough (Note I HATE that).

Its interesting you ask for less info in the VU posts though... it used to be people asked for more info... ma used to be very hap hazard about them... or was that marco.

We used to get threads called "undocumented vu features".

As for the vehicles its as I always said. Make something more convenient/easier and you take away the fun/challenge.

I think vehicles were delayed for so long for exactly this reason. There are some questions really still to be answered - does it make sense we can't shoot mobs with vehicles... not really but from a balance view it makes sense.

I think there is a way to make areas that are challenging even in vehicles though. like "fall damage" we need more "environment" hazards and some no fly zones perhapse.

I like this thread but and it has definite value but I think things are better than they used to be still. I would say there is room for the "charm" to come back though for sure!

OK hands up who tried to climb the pandora tower ? (me!)

Also about vehicles and less fun exploring. I actually will counter that. I avoided them for a very long time cause of not wanting to wreck exploring. However I then discovered its just another way of exploring. You get a different experience whether you are on foot, ground based or flying vehicle. I'd even say its dependant on the type of vehicle cause of the view they give (if you use first person).

I think it gives choice and I alternate a lot. While I realise that hazards are easier to avoid in vehicles in some ways this is good. It means I can explore more without dying so much. Less dying = more exploring = more fun.

I DO want to see some "foot only" zones though. Like you said Greece had that going for it but it was RATHER large to be on foot always (it was a tad empty too... needed "the love" ie little things to find along the way, maybe some NPC's). I wanted "Icarus Wings" ;)

On that note.... why don't we have moving NPCs? I like the idea of a tracker mission where there is an NPC out moving around who you have to find.

  14. I miss the pre CE Swamp Camp and Hadesheim city... hell i miss the whole Calypso.
They could offer a time travel to old planet Calypso for us to visit when we feel nostalgic :)

  15. reminds me of real world watertowers around here.[IMG]

  16. It used to be N of Pandora's Box TP, I used to go there a lot to hunt Atrax only it was difficult to tell which of the huge four support pillars they were lurking behind.

  17. I thought it was some sort of model rendering test only MA forgot to remove it afterwards. Even more mysterious is that there was no island showing on the map and that a powerboat arrived just seconds after I had left it to get back to the mainland. I had the impression that hadn't arrived there by fluke like I had - too much of a coincidence.

OOOOLLLLDDDD thread, but has anything changed. Are there more 'useless' things on the planets (and yes I know there are some 'useless' planets these days, but thats not what I mean :)

  20. Just added the "Nova Light" to my blog. :'(

It was interactive, available in every bar and had a TT value 0 of 100 PED. I wonder how the 3% limit would have affected its function. Thank god MA removed it many, many years ago. Fuck the free fun !
