Are you annoyed at having to sign in after being absent for a period of time?

  1. Why is it that when I don't visit one of your many forums for a period of time (not sure if its one or a couple weeks) that I have to sign in again??

What the point of checking the box "Keep me signed in" if it doesn't do that?

This happens to every forum I am a member on. EP, NI, Cyrene.

On another note, is the copyright on the poll suppose to say from or form??

Well the 'keep me signed in' works with a cookie I think, so if during the period you are away from the forum you clear your system of cookies, then you have to sign in again.

The only time I needed to login again was after I had purged my cookies.

It is annoying, I think it happens due to forum changes.

Even when I check forum each day, I can have that happen. Usually happens after the forum has been down for some hours....

  4. I don't clear cookies, and it has happened before the forum problems that we have had lately. The only thing I can associate it with is not checking regularly.

Has not happened to me, but I do visit here WAY to much, maybe Admin can shed some light at this.

You must be special then my dear RAZER, because it happens to me too, and it IS annoying, because I don't clear the cookies either, and I don't know why this happens - it doesn't happen anywhere else for me.

I'm with Softy and Ace on this one, and maybe the changes at the forum or the maintenance work that's being done has something to do with it, don't know.

This has to do with the settings you have for your cookies. When you sign in, and click keep me singed in, it sets up a cookie so when you come back, it has your info stored already and you don't need to re-enter it again. Also every time you visit the forum it resets the time stamp for the cookie. If you have your cookies set up in your security to purge them after an amount of time, you need to re-sign again if you haven't visited the forum within that time. By default I believe it's one week, but don't quote me on that. Hope that helps.

One other thing, the reason for deleting these cookies is for security reasons. A malicious site can read these cookies and get info like passwords etc... :)

  8. Well, I see many others may have been kicked off and needed to relog today :banghead:

This is the first time I had to as well today since the forum changes as of a few days ago. It's no big deal, just thought I would say something.

happens to me too but only if i haven't been here in a while. I think that even the "keep me signed in" option as an eventual timeout limit on it OR it could be that the server resets and so it boots everyone...

Softy the full line there says:

Its just that the beginning and end text are in a colour that hides it almost perfectly

  10. I prefer to sign in manual, never know when a laptop might get stolen.

  11. Hi,
This is because cookies (where your information is stored in) have a set "time-to-live". And in case of the EP cookie ("xf_User") this is 1 week. Then it expires. This is a preset
    time span.

I agree that it's very convenient to auto-log in to all the forums. But at the same time it's a serious security problem - anybody with access to your machine can write in your name, pretending to be you, for instance. And even more serious, there's ways to read your cookie for malicious websites (as long as there's matching security holes that are not fixed yet) - and this can be abused to spam forums in your name, or to do other nasty things there.

I usually have my browser set to "Delete all cookies when closing". This requires me to log in each time, but then the form filler helper comes to aid, so that I just type "x", chose my name and hit enter. Still a certain security risk, but it's more expensive stealing my form data than to simply copy my cookies ...

    Have fun!

Where did you see that? We bought the copyright-free version of that add-on, and I thought that removed the note. I haven't seen it on the frontpage, but wasn't aware it also appeared elsewhere?

As for the cookies, I do assume our server issues did not help. But luckily those seem to be behind us now :)

  14. Right there ------> see pic

So where would I adjust the cookies? Or can I just eat them and solve the problem? :)

  15. Ok I just got to thinking of the "cookies" that some mentioned was the issue. How can this be an issue on my side if the other forums I visit don't behave the same way. hmmm or maybe I have visited them in the last 7 days. Either way, how do I change it? I don't see someone getting on my computer just to say stupid shit on the forum, I do a good job of that myself :)

LOL there is a way to extend the time to live for cookies. Here is the microsoft web site showing you how to do it, (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813827) but beware, the reason this is enabled for the default time, isn't just to protect you from others posting silly shit on your account on some forum.. like blowing up all the purple crayons and replacing them with just blue ones... :sneaky: There are some sites, that use exploits in browsers in order to take control of your computer. So if you use this one to say do banking, or other security sensitive stuff, your allowing them enough time to find these cookies with all your info, and use them for buying stuff like purple crayons!!! :eek (2): Heaven forbid!! :alcohol:lol

  17. LOL your just too cute! And yes! God forbid I let someone buy purple crayons on my account, when all know that wouldn't be good! LOL!!

Ok, I'll leave it alone, not in a mood to mess with it all anyway :(
