In an effort to try and slow down the amount of spam we have been getting lately on the site. I have enabled the setting that requires users to verify their emails before they are able to post on the forums. Lets see how this does.
I would have thought this was in place already, but I guess I didn't have to do it before. Is it set to where a admin has to approve? Or your sent a link to verify your address?? Are the spammers coming from a certain provider? And are the spammers accounts being deleted? The reason I ask is because I have notice one of them has been signed in for the last day or so.
I would highly advise you to also use a Captcha, and implement some additional required profile fields with questions. The mail verification in itself isn't sufficient. The captcha in itself isn't sufficient, either, as bots can crack those now. The required profile fields do the trick nicely, though. Use something piss-simple, like "What is the first letter in "Greek?". It might not seem like much, but it will reduce the amount of spam to a minimum :)
Only plugin I could find that does that type of question thing does not support vBulletin 4.0.8. If you know of any plugins that might assist with this please post some links in this thread...
