I was browsing through MMORPG.com this morning (as sometimes I am known to do for my daily MMO digest) and noticed this article now on the front page. Entropia Universe : Next Island - Entropia Universe for PC at MMORPG.COM Its not a very in depth look at Next Island, but it does give it a mention and gloss over a few things. I like things like this. Im a big proponent of going to the various MMO sites and giving visibility to various games out there, and have been involved with increasing visibility of products like Chronicles of Spellborn, Entropia Universe, Darkfall Online, and others. I feel the community could offer something better than this author does though. Her review is shallow, and basically just cuts and pastes quotes from the dev team we have been familiar with here for at least a year, if not longer! One of my sticking points with EU has been the continual advertisement of the platform as a game where people can make money. The users over at this particular site can be rather savvy, and almost all of them are very cynical having seen a multitude of MMOs go through the doors, succeeding, failing, or simply scamming users out of their money. Saying users can make money is seen as an embellishment, as theyre smart enough to know that most users dont make money. My point is if you're looking to promote the interests of our game on sites like this you need to dig a little deeper than that, and move focus away from that towards how the platform actually is. Regardless though, its good to see some publicity on one of the major MMO sites.
I assumed it was mob farming or crafting like we are doing now. Perhaps also land area ownership. To be honest I would think property ownership with ability to actually grow product might appeal more to a farmville player. Not land area style, but smaller scale.
"Officially Launches in February" ?? I wonder how official this date is. The other thing that caught my attention was "ancient China realm expected to be added in 2011" I don't think I've seen mention of ancient china as a time destination before. I like seeing stuff like this and its an opportunity to answer questions from people who may be interested in the game. narfi
Ancient China was mentioned on another review site as well. Im not sure where they got this info, and have vague suspicions it may be something someone made up and that others ran with. That particular article on MMORPG.com smacks of "Havnt played it. Just writing something for content based off a few internet buzz sites I happen to frequent." These writers have to produce something at least once a week sometimes in order to stay on the payroll as a consultant. The result is often crap.
I assume, from the context, they mean crafting. however, I guess it could apply to sweat gathereing, as that close to what 'farming' is considered in other games when it doesn't mean to grow crops. an interesting point is at the end: 'scheduled for release in february'. this means they're a month behind their original schedule. perhaps, this is why we haven't seen an update.
I noticed a slight new influx of new players last night, so this article may have had that effect. I'm curious about the stated launch date as well, assume it must have come from the NI team or the writer wouldn't have just picked it out of the sky. It really is completely confusing for those already playing for many weeks now lol. The farming? I would not be at all surprized if a future plan is just that, since David Post has made it clear the target audience for this game is the 'casual' and 'female' gamer, those who play games like Farmville on Facebook and Second Lifers etc. I just want to know when time travel is implemented or if it is already and we just haven't figured out the 'mystery' yet ;)
I wouldn't mind if the farming was growing crops. it might be interesting. however, I can't see how that would work. I guess you'd have to have a field someplace. the article mentions that the time travel element will be added after the launch with destinations every 4 months or so. the first two being greece and china, I believe.
this is a quote from Entropia Universe General Article: Next Island at MMORPG.com "Calypso players could come for a holiday and never leave, and Farmville players will find themselves in a far more immersive world which provides them farming mechanics just as, if not more fun." Are we going top have tractors, harvesters and seeders? ha-ha I hope not but I would like to see some form of farming introduced, something that doesn't cost much so the new players would have an additional source of income. I found this somewhere on that same site: "The Ice Age, Ancient Greece, and the Amazon seem to be what the first ones will likely be."
Since all of the article including the release date is referred to in the future, I'd say the author got some sort of press pack before NI existed and just pasted something together. This does little to prepare potential players for what to actually expect upon launching the game. Farms? A new time travel destination every 4 months? A vibrant economy? Comedians performing at Caroline's?? Caroline's is pretty inside, and it has a chair on a stage, but until the barbot actually sells drinks I doubt there will be too many standup (or sitdown) comics booking gigs. Articles like this should say right up front "This information is promotional material from the developers as this gaming environment is not yet open to players." I did learn one thing, that Caroline's is supposed to be a reference to some real world comedy club or chain. I hadn't heard of it.
caroline's is a stand-up comedy club in new york city. they use to have a television programme I use to watch when I was a kid. if you go in the next island location, you'll find a little stage and a microphone. the comedy club has been part of next island promotional material since even before they partnered with mindark. I've always wondered how exactly the club would work. perhaps, it would be some sort of live feed from the actual real club. I don't want to imagine "open mic" night with the entropia universe participants.
