Ten days ago David Post wrote... " I do care but you will soon see the news of what we are doing to make Next Island a winner. I am not allowed to say anything yet but stay tuned. I am sorry that you all are upset and I do promise to fix it all but it takes time and lots of money. I hope you will keep your minds open as things progress." " I will send out our first info within 10 days. It will be "ok I get it" for you all. I do cvare and I have a ton of money invested. Things WILL be different and one day I hope you will say "I remember thos early days"." "sorry there are some new developments that I am not allowed to speak about for about 10 days. I am sorry but you'll see and then probably be happy about." I know he said about 10 days... Is there any new information coming to us other than... New Content for Next Island « Nextisland Progress « Next Island News ? That certainly doesn't seem to be the information that he was referring to. Also doesn't seem to be something that he is " not allowed to speak about for about 10 days." Any thoughts from the community? Any comments from NI?
If it wasn't the planned major update for June maybe it has something to do with the update we are getting tomorrow and he just missed that the 27th was Sunday instead of Monday.
Well, what he wrote on FB sure sounded like a big deal, and the fact that he said he wasn't allowed to say more makes it feel like more than the June update announcement. It made me feel as though we should be expecting some new real information. Since we had already heard about "Expected Dates For New Content" on the 23rd I thought maybe there was something else. Also, since David said "you'll see and then probably be happy about" it doesn't seem to mesh with the delay til June, I mean... why would we be happy about that? I had a couple of specific things in mind that would certainly make most of us happy, and would certainly help NI overall in a huge way, but I won't mention those ideas in public for a few days... just in case I'm right and they want to announce it. I really hope my thoughts are right.
The way i see it, either a new "brand" name like Caroline's will be getting a spot, or something that has to do with the company, ie the change of Development Studio due to controversy mostly started in PCF. Seeing as David Post so far hasn't shared anything that has to do with the company's plans and seems mostly focused in advertising, i'd wager the first. And i also hope not the second, because i'm not exactly convinced that all the wrongdoings are generated by NDS.
To be honest regarding NDS Im not particularly impressed by the level of detail theyre presenting. All personal politics aside (I have no interest in anyone's moral debate), here's some things that would make me want to reconsider or renegotiate my level of involvement with NDS were I the owner of this particular platform. 1) The use of a static Sky box. Ever look up in Next Island? Ever notice that the same clouds are in the same places --- and that if you look close enough in daytime you can still see the little stars that make up the night pattern? Instead of a dynamic sky, like we have on Calypso, we have basically a single image file that changes in luminosity / contrast / hue over time to display different features. Seems petty, but the small details make up the virtual world. 2) The color pallete. It seems off. Its as if the world were viewed through a pair of Blublocker sunglasses. It doesnt bother me per se. Its just strange. Every once in a while my brain just goes -- bzzzt. Wrong color! 3) The bugs. Teleporting into a land area only to show up inside the pad, be stuck, and have to either T out or use a TP chip. Annoying. Probably more annoying if you dont have a TP chip available. Also the texture issues at Enchanted Village, and the big line running through the world on the main island. These things bother me more than the designer plastering his name all over the place, and to me they speak of a level of quality that needs to be addressed. 4) The incomplete world. This product has been in development for at least a year. Probably more like 2-3. In a year a checklist of items needed for certain key zones to function was either not looked at, or was not done completely. Missing turrets have led to widespread exploitation of the mobs at revives. Missing items in Greece have made it unusable. And the world itself is missing infrastructure needed to really create a true world. I understand graphic construction takes alot of time, but it seems like the studios priorities may have either lacked focus, or been largely elsewhere. Yes I know all this can be changed. MA has proven their willingness to redo entire maps if needed. Certain key things though seem to have been completely overlooked. The concept is grand. The implementation, not so much. These are however just my opinions. People shouldnt take them as my attempt to speak for anyone else, or attempt to make a decision on the part of anyone involved.
FYI you can escape from under the teleporters. Hold down the jump key and run forward against any of the stairs back and forth and POP you jump out
This is why they can never give estimated dates. If you say "about 10 days" the community decides that means exactly 10 days and at 10 days + 1 second you are an unreliable liar :)
Hahhaa! Exactly. People were getting anxious before the 10th day had even happened. As if by their righteous indignation and foot stomping they could propel the process forward with greater speed. :-)
Whoa... Wait a darn minute... Are you saying that my foot stomping doesn't work? Aww, man... I thought I had a great method worked out there. Bummer.
Sorry for the question, but Next Island was planned to go official in mid january. But I never heard a word about it... Is it yet official or are we still in beta???
From what I understand it went official in Feb. with planned updates coming until mid June. Supposed to major by the time it's done.
Im wondering this same thing, actually. It wasnt clear. From my particular standpoint this question is very important. Is NI still in Open Beta, or has it entered the release stage?
well, I always figured that, since next island was available on the EU production platform, it was live - a commercial release. the idea of beta doesn't really apply as people, items, and cash can move back and forth. "undeveloped" (underdeveloped?) would be more accurate. people are going to make judgements about what they see ans experience. we just have to wait and see what unfolds.
Agreed on the underdeveloped thing. In an MMORPG with constant releases and patches its never really out of the testing and construction phase. The terms are used loosely.
In the absence of anything more specifically on this, and the absence of any comment on the Metis romance advice being a joke, I'm wondering if that news was the news David Post was talking about.
