BBC : Virtual life after death

Discussion in 'General Entropia Universe Discussion' started by Pennsif, May 22, 2010.

  1. Interesting BBC article about what happens to online assets after death :

BBC News - Virtual life after death

Including quote from David Simmonds :
A virtual space station was sold for $330,000 on a game called Project Entropia, a world record for virtual transactions.
What would happen to this if you died?
"We have received several questions from users and request for guidelines on our policy and the manner in which they should regulate their own wills," says David Simmonds of Project Entropia, "but specific virtual items cannot be inherited by different persons - only the access rights to the account as a whole."

thats nice, but where exactly is MA's policy statement on transfering the access rights to the account? didnt they say they were looking into it? maybe it passed me by but thats as far as it went iirc.

Will be interesting to see what MA's view on this is.

Funny that the article talks about Project Entropia and not Entropia Universe :)

Made a little support case to ask about this and this is what I got:

Any idea what they mean by estate inventory, is this just a crapy translation from Swedish or do I just don't understand?

Anyway, it is good to know that you can transfer your virtual items to one of your relatives when you die.

Sounds to me as if they mean the avatar's inventory (accessible from the EU website).

Nice terms, for MindArk, though. They make it sound as if either Lykke or me die, we cannot play the other account, and nor can we sell the skills and/or items on it, but we have to request a purge instead. Meaning you basically get fuck all back, and MA laughs their ass all the way to the bank with the difference between what was deposited to buy items and skills and their TT value.

    nope Peter,

Looks like you can choose to play with it. Buy in your case someone else then you needs to inherit the account, because you can't have 2. Than that 3th person can sell all stuff or give it to you and the account can be deleted if you wish to do so.

Don't they mean your real life estate (meaning your home). This is the only place where you can store your log in data for family to find when you die.

i think by "estate inventory" they do indeed mean something related to real live paperwork. In the UK there is a process called probate where the estate is assesed for tax liability and that tax paid before the estate is released to the recipients of the will. i wonder if the documentation they require is that from the end of the probate process, which would not be available until the EU avatar had been sold off? i fear that MA have taken a brief glance at how the system in Sweden works and assumed it will work elsewhere. they have done this before on identification, not realising that not all countries have state ID or other any form of compulsory photographic ID which they originally required.

long and short, i wouldnt trust the official channel, its too copmlex or inflexible. leave details of the account in will or note irl and maybe an in game "executor" to assist in selling off equipment and skills.

Yep that would be a lot easier. If you die your bank account goes toe you partner or parents anyway, so any money in game that needs to be transferred out will get to them anyway.

I would also advise to have add a name and email address of a ingame soc member or friend that needs to be notified when you die, so that it is known and people do not start to worry about you.

Maybe even a last will threat here where we can point our relatives to.

Well I suggest to add your username and password in your will so there will be no doubt to who gets your account, and don't tell MA about it
