After 12 years of not optimizing CE2...they annoucne to switch to UE5. Totally makes sense...in terms of massive PR gags, that will come up with this...
The UE5 visuals look good and going by what it says on their site, it offers terrain building, asset/object creation, animation plus other stuff as well as a physics engine. But it seems a very complex package, so MA will have their work cut out. I only understood a teeny bit of it.
oooh concept art! Nice! I've not seen that since the space update! One more from the gram of insta - just a zoom in/another angle on the same area. In other news... https://forum.nextisland.com/t/next-island-unreal-engine-5-press-release/24/3
It's really sad they host these images there, dramatically reduces images quality. There are few tricks to avoid reduction but obviously they don't know these. I've actually downloaded the images and ran them through filters to increase quality but you can't make gold from mud... Regarding the engine change. It's weird. MA/Calypso certainly has more resources to create, convert and optimize assets than some planet partners have. So we might see even more of divergence between the planets... And I believe you can build something great with any modern engine. "we can't be better because we don't have x" is a lame excuse. Award-winning Elder Scrolls Oblivion was built with Gamebryo, also Defiance to name a real MMO, but MA couldn't do it, they needed CryEngine 2. Aion, another MMORPG was built with CryEngine 1, released before MA switched to CryEngine 2 and it looked better than VU10 and needless to say it had a much more diverse gameplay. Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 is an already released CryEngine game too: > CryEngine was basically licensed by Amazon for their Lumberyard Engine which is why Star Citizen switched from CryEngine to Lumberyard, it was an comparatively easy switch, a proof that it can be done with a modern Sci-Fi MMO. New World was too created with Lumberyard. But MA needs Unreal Engine 5. Ok. Let's see what we get in 2023 or 4 or so. Here's New World: >
Good proof of argument Tass! So what's MA not doing that they should be doing? My guess is that they'll still want to retain a certain look-and-feel to EU whatever engine they upgrade to, whenever they upgrade ....
It's looking ok so far based on what few screenshots they've put out. But indeed I've already made all Tass's points on PCF. We all know that with MA steering the ship it will only ever be sub standard to what others would do.
I still play TESO since launch in 2014 with some pauses. The main differences to EU are: They are more constantly, they offer a story and they deliver a way bigger area. The so far developed continent Nirn/Tamriel is bigger than the whole Universe of Entropia. And it's more interesting. Graphics are medium with what ever 3d-engine they use. But it's okay since the global concept works pretty good. The tricky part is to use the given recources and tools in a good way. That's what MindArk missed all the time. Bethesda lately published "Skyrim VR" for PC. Wich means one can use most of the SE-mods from the community in VR, probably including the - technically impossible - 3rd person view. So I think seriously about the 3rd purchase of Skyrim. Graphics from 2011. But a good story. And Skyrim is still one of the best AAA-titels in VR. I played it so often meanwhile! Where is this breathtaking story for EU? And btw what was that VR announcement for EU worth? Nothing it seems! I say, they can change the 3d engine as often as possible. It won't help as long as they don't use the possibilities in a professional way AND as long as they don't deliver a good story. Alas, the story! We demanded it (at the other forum) so many years ago ... 15 years ago? YES! 15 years ago.
I don't know, were you seriously expecting a story? I've always seen it in a way that RCE is their story, and it attracts the characters to write it, fwiw. You're free to make up your own. An open world, not having an overarching storyline you follow to complete the game is part of its concept in the first place. I believe this is described somewhere officially.
If you are quick this can be your 3rd one: https://gamefound.com/projects/modiphius/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-the-board-game#/
Well... I have to admit my original draw was in equal parts the RCE (or at least elements of it*) and the SciFi setting/story. To me the story is important and not something one should have to forge oneself. Trouble is I'm in a massive minority on that score. Of course, nothing wrong with a little personal imagination or even fan fiction but MA should try and keep up more than the barest of skeletons. Wist * It was the story in the Gate about how cK took over PVP3 and became virtual highway men. I thought that was so cool!
The existance of a feature like RCE cannot be an excuse for not having a good story/setting, not having great gameplay or simply not having a well directed and well delivered state-of-the-art game. While not many people might go to Vegas to hear the story of the town going there is still pretty immersive. Going to Entropia is not. If you consider it a casino it's a bad casino, if you consider it a game it's a bad game. The point is it could be a great game without putting off the gamblers. If you are doing a game anyway, if you have to create assets anyway, why not doing it in a way that results in a great product attracting more people. Entropia's problem is mainly MindArk's denial of consistent direction. At this point over decades. It has been better during a short period of First Planet Company/SEE Digital Studios, driven by people like Creative Director Andreas Roman, Krister forgot-the-name and yes, also Marco Behrmann. At this point and with Unrealverse in the making it would be best to admit that the Planet Partner concept was a total fail, consolidate the planets under a consistent sci-fi scenario and erase everything that doesn't fit, and re-name the result to Project Entropia.
Just shut it down altogether. I recently predicted MA would just try to hitch a ride with whatever the next hot trend was. I imagined it'd be squid game, but the new TI release showed they instead went for MetaVerse, while that is being talked about by Zuckerdick. If you ask me, the entire concept of the MetaVerse is a big fad, primarily intended to draw attention away from the legislation being drafted to remove minors from Instagram. There's no vision left at MindArk. It's just hopping on random bandwagons hoping something eventually will stick. We saw it with the mobile game, we saw it with the ICO, we see it with the MetaVerse. I'm somewhat surprised they didn't get tempted to throw "Big data" around when that was the hype among managers. As Tass described, EU doesn't work as a game, because it's not a game. It barely works as a casino. Just shut. it. down.
We should have something like a MA's history of hype buzzwords article. MMORPG bla bla VIRTUAL WORLD bla USER GENERATED CONTENT bla IT'S DYNAMIC bla CRYENGINE2 bla CRYPTO bla TOKEN bla METAVERSE bla while ist hasn't changed much at all in 2 decades. In the early 2000 we've started as players in an MMORPG, then we turned "participants" in Virtual World, then we became "multi-world" MMO players again and now we are citizens of the metaverse.
