Here's some initial questions I came up with: How do you guys know one another? Your profiles seem to indicate different businesses altogether, so how did you end up sitting down together and deciding you wanted to build a game? In your initial game description on the website, you mention that skill and not chance will be the decisive factor in your game. Could you elaborate a bit more on how you eliminate chance from the game, please? Is it merely the three of you working on Odyssey X, or have you secured additional resources as well? How is it that GolVision intends to make money from the game? Is the idea to have participants pay tournament fees, of which you guys will take a cut, and the winner will get the rest, or will there be some sort of a micro transaction system involved? What made you choose to develop a racing themed MMORPG? Our readers mostly are people who have played another Real Cash Economy game called Project Entropia. Are you familiar with the game? Have you played it, and if so, what was your favourite profession in the game? What do you like about it, and what parts would you do totally different? Which engine are you using to develop Odyssey X, and how experienced are the three of you in programming with it? What made you decide to go with this engine? That's a few questions I can come up with. If you have others, feel free to post them here, and we'll be sure to send them onto the developers of Odyssey X :)
RCE Racing: Odyssey X - Live, Drive, Conquer... 2 that come to mind for me: Will the game be one world (like EU) or have multiple servers (like WoW)? Are there plans to get car companies involved so you will be able to use 'real' cars?
RCE Racing: Odyssey X - Live, Drive, Conquer... No further questions? Then I'll start working on the list as it exists now, and see if we can deliver an interview soon :)
RCE Racing: Odyssey X - Live, Drive, Conquer... What system requirements and perehials will be needed. How will you secure invested monies like is done with Entropia universe with their Gold card. Will there be sponserships from real world racing teams at some point.
RCE Racing: Odyssey X - Live, Drive, Conquer... Two questions I'd be interesting in seeing an answer to: How do you plan to handle the different network latencies of competing players? Players with a lower latency to the host or server tend to have favourable conditions in a race, which is a concern when money is on the line. Will an effort be made to match players against those of a similar skill level? I was playing a game called DiRT 2 and when I was playing multiplayer it was obvious that regular players were extremely difficult to beat, even after I clocked up quite a few hours racing. If I was a casual player racing in your game with cash on the line it wouldn't take long for me to realise that I was being matched against people I had no hope of beating without a huge outlay of time (and possibly money). These are actually fairly important from a competitive and a "will my game survive?" point of view, particularly in its early stages as the population of the game world is growing. - Deathifier
Hi my friends, I along with Odyssey X head developer, Robert Sitton will be answering your questions. If you have any thoughts that should be heard feel free to let us know because we can take it to consideration. With that said, lets begin- Golvision Innovations has three co-founders, Earl Pratt Jr, Marc Serrette and Larry Jean-Baptiste. Marc and I went to college together, we always spoke about starting a business yet we had to find a good idea, a product that would benefit anyone that uses it. The main thing we wanted was to make something so inexpensive anyone could use. As we were searching for this idea, I met Earl Pratt Jr, a business management student that shared the same goal as us (to start a business). Hence, we all became friends. One day while playing a racing game and being bored because I had beat it twice already, I suggested that if we can make a game like this and add a money factor into the game it will give the gamer the ability to make money and be productive while playing a video game. As we spoke about it more, the passion grew, thats when we decided to begin Odyssey X. In your initial game description on the website, you mention that skill and not chance will be the decisive factor in your game. Could you elaborate a bit more on how you eliminate chance from the game, please? To make sure skill was the main decisive factor in this game the players will always compete against each other. There will not be any use of robots in the game. When a player joins a weekly tournament for example, he is racing against other human players for first place. There will also be a practice lounge where gamers can increase their skill without having to join a tournament. Is it merely the three of you working on Odyssey X, or have you secured additional resources as well? We actually have secured additional resources from Gametelligent, a well-experienced game development company. For a game of this caliber we realized at an early stage that we would need the expertise from a professional. The founder of Gametelligent has worked with many titles in the gaming industry and we felt it would be perfect to work with them. Cheers
got a question for ya: Can you tell us anything about the progress you are making so far, are you still in early stages of development or is it taking shape. Any eta on an alpha or beta or even the launch?
RCE Racing: Odyssey X - Live, Drive, Conquer... Each tournament in Odyssey X will use its own server. We will get car companies involved over a period of time. For the first Beta stage which is being launched in the Fall, Odyssey X will have generic cars. After the money factor(monetization) is added to Odyssey X in the Winter, gamers will have the ability to use real car brands.
thanx, for the answers, but I have a followup question about this. You say each tournament is played one one server, but will it still be possible to talk or chat with players one other servers or can I only talk to people on the same server I am on?
RCE Racing: Odyssey X - Live, Drive, Conquer... Greetings! My company, Gametelligent, is developing Odyssey X for Golvision. The game will have multiple game severs and a lobby server with full chat support. Chatting will be allowed across server boundaries. In a nutshell, each game server will communicate with the world server and a commerce server managed by a sophisticated process & load manager. Races will consume one game server that is spawned remotely.
RCE Racing: Odyssey X - Live, Drive, Conquer... Minimum System Requirements Windows XP 1Ghz Processor 256 MB RAM 3D Graphics Accelerator w/ 128 MB RAM
The beta will be out this fall. The game is taking shape! We will start tuning the racing mechanics at the beginning of July. This will ensure the cars behave properly and give us some initial data for customization. At this time, we are working on the infrastructure prior to release and adding features to the engine. Basically, getting everything secure, bulletproof, and streamlined.
The base physics will be very realistic, but your modifications can dramatically change the behavior of your vehicle. Overall, the idea is to make the vehicle feel right while playing on your PC.
RCE Racing: Odyssey X - Live, Drive, Conquer... Good question Deathifier, Odyssey X is based on fairness; when racing against other opponents in a single activity racers will be matched based on specific criteria set by Odyssey X.
RCE Racing: Odyssey X - Live, Drive, Conquer... Good stuff, it's the close races that are the most enjoyable and doing your best to match players up based on their ability will create a fair environment with the bonus of making racing more fun :) All the best with it! - Deathifier
Got some more questions; How many people are currently working on the project? How big will the game be; how much will we have to download? Will there be a possibility to make custom maps, cars,...? Is there a single player mode?
So did a little search about this game and there is now news what so ever after this summer. So will this still continue??
