    Dear fellow entropians,

We have launched a brand new wiki for EntropiaPlanets.com

You can find the wiki in the navigation menu. The clever bit about the new wiki is that you do not need to login toa new account to access or edit the wiki since it is connected to this forum. In other words, one login to rule them all! <evil laugh goes here>

The wiki is empty at this moment, but we hope the wiki-experienced members out there will help shape an intuitive structure and of course fill it with all kinds of useful information.

We can start a discussion page on possible ways to structure our information, and then get a-wiki-ing.

    Thanks!

I have been working on the EntropiaWiki, making the navigation menu.

If anything important is missing, please let me know, and I will change it.

It will take quite some time to fill in information of course, but the more who helps out, the faster and more usefull it will become :)

    Hey looks nice !!

Will try to add some pages, but is there any possibility that you enable the uploading of pics, it is disabled now?

[strike]If possible at all, see if you can upload it in the Gallery? That prevents us from storing images multiple times across the site.

Should that not allow you to do what you want, chuck me a PM, and let me know what it is you need, and we'll figure something out.[/strike]

Disregard the quote above, please. We have enabled uploading for wiki, after trying a couple of things. Since we had trouble getting the thumbnails etc to work, we abandoned the idea of sharing the gallery and wiki options.

We're still trying to see if we can figure out a way to ensure sortable grids, like Entropedia has for viewing details of tables.

And thanks for your kind words, MindStar :)

    UPDATE

We are still working on the EntropiaWiki (link in the upper navigation bar) - as said, Lots of things are missing.

To help out picture wise, we made a PICTURE CONTEST

Also, we are adding the society links, which are being ordered for the EP-front page.

Personally I'm adding the turtorials from the Turtorial section

We got the picture gallery up running in the Wiki - so please, use that for ONLY wiki related pictures :)

Last, but not least, we wish to soon include the new maps.

And Peter is working hard on finding a suitable, nice looking, solution on the frames/tables - to make sure it's gonna look nice and will be useful as well.

Peter also changed the posting tool box to include more usefull tools when posting.

We are still in need of information and you are free to ad them :)

Most needed for now are all the turtorial information, and of course there's the need for info about items - but we just need to finish up the perfect (or close to) frame/table for it first - to make sure it is all alike :)

TY for all your support so far :cheer:
    Lykke

  8. I'd like to help out, I am an experienced editor on the official English Wikipedia with ~30k edits there. I also know a thing or two about the WikiMedia software (although I'm not an expert). I could help you fill the Wiki, edit existing pages to conform with the style guide (do you have one?) and I have experience with Wiki-related administrative tasks so if you run in to any questions I can help there as well. Just let me know if and where you need me and i'd be happy to help :)

Feel free to test-drive our wiki, and let us know if anything obvious lacks.

I've edited the toolbar to mimick that of the official wiki, and imported the official Help pages (though some of the templates need a bit of work).

I've also printed a large version of the data model, to see if it makes sense (it does not, really).

Considering your experience, if we want to start making pages for, for example, weapons, what would be the easiest way of achieving this? Should we create a template per item-category (and for mobs, skills, players, locations, etc)?

Also, I've edited the standard look of automatically generated tables a bit, but I'm struggling to find a proper grid control that's easy to incorporate into our wiki. Will a template ensure a standardization of similar item-tables?

Sorry for the bombardment of questions, I'm fairly new to the whole wiki world (Total number of edits on existing wikis across the globe: 0), and I'm anxious to get ours up and running to such an extent that it becomes easy for everyone to add to it :)

  10. I'll give it a go, thanks :)

Importing templates from the official wiki can be usefull but also tricky, the templates on the English Wikipedia for example often have way more code in them then needed, since they are specially designed to work with the English wiki. If you import templates completely you'll undoubtedly end up having to import a ton of dependant templates, files etc. causing the wiki to become a mess with all these unneeded extra templates and files. To avoid this you can do two things: 1: rewrite the entire template from scratch to fit your needs or 2: Import the template from the English (or another) wiki and modify it so it's stripped of all the extra bloating. It depends a bit on the situation and the template what action is best. In any case I can help you in both situations since I had to do a lot of it when I started my own private Wiki.

I'm not sure which model you mean?

This depends entirely on how you want things to look and operate. I can give you some good suggestions or set some things up for you but this post would become very very long. So maybe it would be best if you could add me to MSN, skype or something so we can share thoughts more easily.

If i understand what you want to achieve correctly, then yes a template is exactly the thing you need.

No problem! :D I love to help out, so please ask away :)

Cool. I mostly have been grabbing stuff from MediaWiki, which is the software used. Things seem less bloated there, though the amount of work one has to do still seems substantial. I've been trying to track my changes in a blog, so it hopefully will benefit other people as well at some point.

The mySQL Database model. My main background is in databases, so I figured trying to work from the bottom up would help a bit.

I don't use any of those, but feel free to drop me a mail at my username @ entropiaplanets.com (not naming the actual address, to prevent spam). Alternatively, maybe the Contact Us-page would work as well?

Awesome. Let's see if we can set that up tomorrow then :) I'll be uh... "working" from home...

ok, follwoing another thread i thought i'd make an effort and start updating the wiki... oh.

its not very good for updating. i use a similar system myself at work for capturing day to day note, low level project details and general "scratch pad" of documentation prior to formal docs. so im familar with the system, it works for that.

unfortunatly it doesnt feel like its so good for the mass amount of small details involved here.

Is there a better template or something that can facilitate a better editing interface?

I've been looking into extensions for wiki that hopefully will make everyone's lives easier. As I never ever bothered with a wiki before, though, I'm frankly like a blindman stumbling in the dark, hoping to get lucky.

Anyone with any Wiki knowledge is free to point us into the proper direction, or help us get some nice templates up. I'll throw in a free 6 month subscription to the forum, or a free banner in exchange for decent templates and a solid guiding hand :)
