Lessons to be learned for Planet Cyrene and Arkadia

Discussion in 'General Entropia Universe Discussion' started by harmony, Dec 9, 2010.

  1. Seeing that next island just went sort of "live", and the commotion it caused. I think it can be a valuable moment for upcoming planet partners to take a close look at what went good and what went bad so that their launch can be better.

Since i know some of them read this forum i thought i'd write down some thoughts from an experienced player in the hopes it helps them (and make me move to a new planet in the future). If you have any more ideas please ad them, and hope Cyrene/Arkadia have a better first day when they launch.

    1. Name branding, don't overdo it. (making an Ed's diner, or an Ozi Ant Farm is fine, but seeing the same name over and over antagonizes people and they will not come to your planet).

    2. New items (done well by Next Island), create dozens of new items so that will interest a lot of people to go to your planet, but try not to let them drop all at once (unless you have a fully seperated economy in mind).

    3. Make those new items are useful, by introducing new blueprints solely for your planet. I saw a lot of new items drop on next island, and as a crafter i am tempted to go there. But no blueprints yet, so why should I go there as a crafter? If there are crafters there, they will buy the stuff from the hunters/miners which means people will actually stay longer on the planet, and get the economy going. And especially in the beginning crafters are know to pay a lot of markup, so profit for the hunters/miners.

    4. New and beautiful graphics (done well by next Island), a lot of nice mobs there, beautiful scenery, make it something refreshing and not just the same old stuff we already see.

    5. Inform the people. If next island would have said, "hey we're doing a tryout in december to see how well everything performs, and it is only an amusement park and we go really live in january". Everybody would be happy for a chance to see it already in december (except for the teleport costs ofc).

    6. Have a website with up to date information (and use the clientloader!!) when going live, and one that everybody can use, i'm having serious problems with the next island forum.

    7. Have a tutorial island like FPC, on next island you spawn as a newbee and have no idea what to do next. So everyone in the universe will advice newcomers to start out at FPC instead of your planet.

    8. Missions/storyline/adventure, this is were all planets are seriously lacking, and where there is a huge opportunity for your planet. If you make a planet with an interesting storyline and actual missions that help you progress/understand the story, you have something unique in the universe, that will make a lot of people want to go there.

    9. Unique content: now all the planets are the same in what you can do. Try to have something unique that the other planets don't have (can be as simple as having a mini-game or so?), or maybe boycott some of the vehicles/weapons/skills from other planets, so that everybody has to make a fresh start.

    10. People will complain about your planet, but keep in mind most of them do this because they are so involved with this universe and have their own opinion on the way it should evolve.

    11. Wishful thinking: tell us how you make your peds.

    12. Last but not least: make sure that you make a very good first impression, because NI will have a hard time to convince some people to go there. And while the new planets are supposed to bring in their own people, it won't hurt to convince some of the people that deposit 500 dollars a month to waste it on your planet :)

    And a bonus one: Don't p*ss of Mindstar9 :) j/k

Very good post, Harmony, with valid points. I'm sure the planet partners appriciate thought full threads like this ... because

... and let me continue: with the only interest in seeing the Universe expand, grow and become a succes for everyone involved!

I think as an accomplished graphics artist, you need to make a new banner ... and give credit to StrongMinded for the discovery. :)

  6. What... you didn't like this logo? What's not to like about the manscaped arches?

Good points, Harmony! I think Ozi's team is just walking this way with their Planet Arkadia. The nearly every week updated storyline ~half a year before release alone is such a feature. (Wich dragged me into the project already.) And they do a lot more: asking the community for suggestions, imaginations and wishes ... and they DO ANSWER! That makes a good feeling to me. Even if I get the message: "Your suggestion will not become true because it is in the hands of MA, not ours." Such a kind of answer is satisfying although it is a "No."

Well, it's not a guarantee for success at all. But a promising attitude, isn't it? And I'm pretty sure, Ozi and his team WILL listen to your advice.

Me too want to congratulate Arkadia for getting the chance to observe the process of another planet launch and learn from it. At the other hand: Respect to Neverdie for jumping into cold water as the first "test-driver" with Rocktropia and helping with NextIsland today! *bows*

    Hi Harmony,
It's a well thought through post, so I thought I'd take a moment to comment and share some info on where we are heading.

    Good followup post Ozi.

With your planet being CEO and all, how do you see this effecting your play character Ozi.
Are you intending to restrict yourself somehow at some point?
I am speaking about 'conflict of interest' situations; i was wondering how you intend to tackle it.

PS. Sorry to put you on the spot bud, but I can't give NeverDie all the flack and not others fairly ;)

Ozi is due for retirement, it will be hard to let him go though. Most of the gear I had has gone already. You'll see me with a new CEO avatar.
I am fully aware of the risk of conflicts of interest, so I see Ozi's retirement as the best option for me.

At least you have a good head on you mate, good to hear.
This will be a positive move and yes it is sad to see Ozi go on that front too.

Now if only ND could rub off on you, this universe would be a much better place.
I keep thinking of coming back and doing some serious long term investment and then something crazy happens like ND theme park on NI.
I know this won't happen with your planet, but you know, it is sad to be put off like this; now I am at a 50/50 point of do I or don't I.
I think I will when I look at the potential of 'the others' like yourself that are in the boat. Why let one person & MA to a degree ruin it hey.

1500 usd a month is small time I know, but I bet there are quite a few out there like me giving Entropia some serious thought atm. Reflecting so to speak.

To Harmony ... OMG ... [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]... I just can't stop LAUGHING over here ... your final point about not pissing off MS9 absolutely cracked me UP ... I loved it. Well, let me respond to that though so it's clear where my purple matter is at. I'll just say this ... I have been in this universe for over 5-1/2 years, and regardless of the love/hate relationship I've had with MA/FPC, I love what this universe stands for, and the people who inhabit it as Entropians. I am as vocal as I am because I want to see this universe succeed, and when I experience the likes of what happened this week with Next Island, it just unnerves me.

There was no information that ND was going to have any real estate on Next Island, and nothing was ever said when the exclusive interview was done with David Post either, so ... when the "soft launch" happened (as it's being called), and we are only introduced to the ND island/playground, it sent my purple matter into a tailspin for sure. This has been billed all along as a whole new South Pacific feel planet, with time travel, and exciting destinations to look forward to, yet what are we introduced to right out the gate as a tester? - everything Neverdie, which just took away the whole feel and flavor of the Next Island we were expecting. Granted, it's just an island off the main island of what is to be the Next Island, but ... rather than getting the full feel of what David's dream and vision has been since he was 9 or 11 years old, we get yet another extension of ND's branding with the new CND-2 that has been in development all the while he was selling off the old CND. Personally, this is not the way to launch a planet ... soft launch or otherwise.

Anyway ... despite this whole mess ... I have absolute faith in Arkadia and Cyrene to deliver exactly what they say they're going to deliver with no hidden surprises ... unless it's a cool thing for the community. Both Arkadia and Cyrene have been tremendously interactive with this community, and total professionals in the process 100%. There's no doubt in my mind that these guys are the real deal, and connected to this community. They are genuinely interested in what we think, as well as our assessments about our experiences as players. They have shown us thus far that we matter, and continue to bring us into the fold during their development process. I don't think we could ask for anything more, but if we do, they are listening and address it.

This is something we're not used to, but the leaders of both Arkadia and Cyrene are saying we should be, and deserve it, ... and for that I am incredibly grateful. This is something the community has wanted for years, as well as the quality level we're getting it. I know that I will find a home on both planets, and I'm looking forward to it.

I have no doubt that we can trust Arkadia and Cyrene to be straight up with us ... now, the only other variable in this is MA, and I only hope that they do their part in all of this to make it as effortless as possible at launch (please don't wake me up, this is a wonderful dream - I'm talking about the MA part). :)

To Ozi ... thank you very much for taking the time to respond to Harmony's post/points ... and  backatcha.

Just for everyone's info. I was told late last night that apparently the CND on NI info apparently *was* revealed on the NEVERDIE Studios webpage a long time ago (and judging by the wording used, it was not publically linked, but rather hidden somewhere), but has since dissappeared.

If anyone happens to have more information about that, or maybe even has the PDF in question, we'd of course be happy to see it.

The main information that I, and I assume many others as well, have gone by, though, has been the communication and interviews done by David Post, and nowhere in there was there any mentioning of a NEVERDIE island, park, resort, etc. If that had been communicatted clearly in advance, people would have been able to alter their expectations.

Edit: I just found that our own EntropiaPlanets Wiki page about Next Island has an image showing there'd be a franchise of Club NEVERDIE on Next Island. It only mentions that, though, and not a full island.

    Kay Jones who?

"But the plans were on display . . . "
"On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them."
    "That's the display department."
    "With a Flashlight."
"Ah, well the lights had probably gone."
    "So had the stairs."
"But look, you found the notice didn't you?"
"Yes," said Arthur, "yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying Beware of the Leopard.

Until the "Club NEVERDIE" photo from Next Island showed up at the Next Island forum, posted by SoftHart I believe, I don't think there was ever any "public" information out there that ND was going to have any real estate or portion of Next Island at all, only that his studio was going to be doing the building of the island.

I don't remember seeing anything at a website, and I'm not sure who's telling you this stuff, but before I would believe anything of the sort, I would want proof, because nothing as far as I'm concerned has ever been publicized about this whatsoever. The only club that was ever mentioned by David Post was Club Caroline, which he mentioned in his interview.

Not once did David ever mention to me during the lengthy interview process that there was going to be a Neverdie anything, ever. I'm more inclined to think that this was all hidden and not advertised anywhere, even in all the publicity that ND puts out into the universe, so I'm also inclined to think that it was hush, hush and not revealed until Wednesday. If there was ever anything at the NI or ND websites about this and it wasn't a secret or hidden project, then why pull it? It doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever. This community was led to believe that Next Island was a fresh and new planet that encompassed the dream and vision of David Post, separate from anything related to any of the other planets, period.

This whole revealing of Next Island ... no matter what type of pre-, mini-, soft release it was, and no matter what real estate showed up ... was poorly handled, period ... and to not have any pre-launch public announcements about it, or an after the fact official statement made about it, is very unprofessional as far as I'm concerned. If I was a planet partner and this type of unrest was going on in the community, I would be all over it explaining what was going on, but as we know ... the only planet partners who have truly opened up and embraced this community is Arkadia and Cyrene, and I don't think we should allow this mess to have any effect on what they are doing as planet partners at all, but rather respect their professionalism and appreciate that they give us the time of day ... no, more than the time of day.

  17. ank you Ozi for taking the time to reply to my post, I'm already subscribed to the newsletter and i must say I love it! :jump:
I don''t like to join too much Fora, I joined FPC since i was a member of EF and there are the most players there. And i joined this one because it has the most information on it about all planet partners, and way more cool frontpage stories !:)

I will think about joining arkadia's forum since so far i think arkadia is the most open in communication, even though the launch is still a long time away..
I would like to adress one point though, knowing that is is probably out of your hands, but I have to give it a shot though:

    Cant get the quote thingie working but i meant;
[11. Wishful thinking: tell us how you make your peds.
The info is quite open there, look at the partner side of the Entropia Universe website

Yes i know you get a share of the revenue Mindark makes, but what i was thinking of more in general is 'what happens to our peds' ? You see there are a lot of people that leave because at some point they are sick of the losses, and mindark keeps it very vague on what they take. That adds to more confusion and annoyance for a lot of players. If i look at myself I have a 93% tt return rate over my activities this year (not counting armor/fap/tool decay), while some might argue those are good results with a turnover of over 1 million peds that is 70k ped loss a year, which is a lot. and way more then 1 dollar an hour (which is already rediculously high compared to other online games).

There are loads of loot theories out there saying i will get it back, or that i will get lucky sooner or later, maybe other people who are more eco will have a tt return over 100% if MA really only takes 'decay' , or maybe i would do better if i followed a skill-gain theory/ switch servers/ only loot facing north/, don't play during bad periods etc. etc. While it is fun to figure some things out, some more clarity would be very welcome.

For now i'm almost out of peds, meaning next year i'll have to mine a lot to save iup peds so that in 2012 i can craft again. With some more answers i might continue crafting and keep stimulating the economy.

Like i said i know you probably can't do/say anything about it. But i think it is one of the main reasons why a lot of experienced players quit, and i think like the farmville-example that you can earn a lot more by taking a few peds from a lot of people then by taking a lot of peds from a few people. Maybe you can bring it up in your next business meeting with mindark? :boxer:

Cyrene and Arkadia peeps have already proven they have the vision and the skills.

The only thing we haven't seen yet is how they coop with the undoubtely hideous EU platform, but hey ND studios made it so..?

I think we are already on the safe side XD

This should be a requirement for all employees of planet partners. Hanne had to give up Skam when she went to work for FPC. It should be the same for all.
