I think it here the main problem with the other planet partners are, lack of money and income. They simple can't afford to have the size of development team they need to keep a good pace of the development to be successful. Arkadia got a good start with the launch and have gotten a player base that seems at least somewhat big enough to sustain the development, even if it goes slow, but that is a problem for all of EU, a bit slow development because we are a small player base and the income is not big enough to have the needed development teams to speed things up. The planet partners would not be able to do the same type of game by them self with the same resources as they have now, as a planet inside EU they have the game engine and other thing else in place and don't need to take care of that.
I find it disturbing that Mindark is recommending that new players finding the NI website start at Calypso. At least redirect them to the page where they can read about the other starting locations. I wouldn't assume that just because it's "bigger", Caly caters to new players better. Mobs, mining zones, terrain, crafting, Ark was designed with new players in mind while Caly was not. There are more missions on caly, more people, and more mob-infested landscape to explore, but most new caly players transported to Ark (that I have talked to anyway) tell me that they like Ark better. However, it's probably easier to play for free on Caly since there are more players there to leech off of.
Speaking of Arkadia. I finally got myself over there the other day. I can certainly agree its very newbie friendly and honestly was quite a lot of fun. They give you enough in the newbie missions to get you going in the game. Items and activities like hunting or mining seem to also go further. My concern now though, is how quiet it is from everyone. Mindark especially. No big VU or even some big Christmas extravaganza except Merry Mayhem.
And given how many "Merry Mayhem esk events" we've had this year we know it must be pretty easy to put them on now. So all in all, no major updates from MA now for nearly a year. Watch the sky people, it might be falling this time
Maybe so. I think it would be obtuse, however, to ignore the fact that two of the planet failures (NI and RT) were due mainly to poorly chosen themes, and poorly managed implementation by the PP. Though, even the failed delivery by the PP could be attributed to the lack of guidance by the platform developer. Afterall, MA whole-heartedly signed off on the gimmicky Rocktropia and museumesque NI.
