The repair terminal scam

  1. I want to talk about the repair terminal scam. However, unlike most scams, this time it's MA scamming us.

Here's how the scam works. When you repair something take a note of the PEDs on your card and the cost quoted to repair. After the repair check how much was taken off your card and you'll find one of two things:
    1. It's correct.
    2. It's 1 PEC more.
I'm putting this down to an internal rounding error (the amounts charged for repairs and on our card may have more precision than is actually displayed to us).

But, here's the scam. In my experience I have never been charged 1 PEC less. If it was truely just a rounding issue I'd expect to sometimes be over charged and sometimes be under charged (and sometimes exactly, of course).

I raised this with MA and they did absolutely nothing.

I know it's only 1 PEC, but in my opinion it's completely wrong to appear to take more money than you say you're going to.

  2. hmmm, strange.
I did not noticed it in the past but I did not have a focus on it. I will have a close look during my next repairs on it and will post a feedback and raise another ticket to MA.
    Let's see

  3. :search:I have noticed this many times so far. You will notice also that you may have .50 PEC on your card, and it cost .50 to fix your items, but it wont let you fix your items because you do not have enough money. :search:

:search:This is very annoying... Until I get a HoF on my own, this is unacceptable!:search:

  4. The only reason I've noticed is because I record the exact repair costs in a spreadsheet and I realised that my card balance was often 1 PEC different in my spreadsheet to reality. So then I checked more closely and noticed the problem.

I need to pay closer attention. Every rounding algorithym I've ever employed whether it be for the financial, insurance, manufacturing or gaming industry rounds up if over half of the next minimum increment and down if less than half. And, usually, if it was exactly half it was rounded up in favor of the customer Example: if a payout was being made to the customer it rounded up and down if a charge was assesed. It was all based on customer satifaction. Perhaps, that's the issue with MA. It's not really about the customer.

  6. There is another algorithm which is 'rolling penny rounding' - or rolling cent. pec or whatever.

The idea is that every transaction rounds down to the penny, with the remainder being 'held' in an accumulating reserve. Once this reaches a whole penny then this is applied to the transaction that pushed the reserve over a penny, effectively rounding that one 'up'.
This is the only error-free way of doing it, and is favoured by payroll systems, and some financial processes.
This is also why the guy in Superman 3 wouldn't have been able to pull the scam he did, unless their system pre-dated this algorithm.

As for the scam, I'm unsurprised. All errors end in their favour, the most obvious one being misses and lags. They would argue that it comes back out into the loot pool I guess, but somehow I doubt it.

Somebody has to pay for the Land Areas that MA has given away recently as prizes. Maybe that is where all the peds skimmed off during repairs has gone to. :hehe:

  8. Its a normal thing because of not displayed decimal places . The internal calculation is made by at least 3 digits after the colon. You can prove it for yourself with some crafted low lvl stuff where 100 pieces are worth another value as xx,00 Ped. (can not give a excact example but think dampers are such)
As you can imagine the calculation was always round down if you sell and round up if you have to pay (like in the repair issue)

  9. hey, this is not a scam, the only reason is that it shows 1 PEC less then it should cost you, noticed it while i was calcin with my armor and i got my repairs to 0,63 but repair terminal gor it to 0,62 but 0,63 was taken from my card.. so nota scam=)

  10. Hehe, that's small scale scam indeed. Watch this one, it happened some VUs ago. Repair terminal did somehow remember total cost of previous repairs and applied it to this item too.
