I want to upgrade from 4 to 8gb RAM, I'm running 64bit Vista, have a MSI DKA790GX Platinum Mainbord with a pair of 2gb modules (ddr2 pc1066 mushkin cl6 blue frostbyte, which doesnt seem to be produced anymore). The mainboard has two more slots, and since there dont seem to be any 4gb ddr2 modules I need another pair of 2gb. thats where my understanding of the matter ends though. What do I have to consider except pc1066?
I would say thats pretty much it. Although make sure that the board accepts the same type of ram in the second pair of slots and will use all four at the same time. Some boards only allow 1 of the pair to be populated at a time. Had this with my last PC (Last time I buy a pre-built).
I would go for 4 bank of the same brand and type, but that's just me. Chances are that 2 different brand work very well together, so just give it a go and if some how it doesn't work you can always buy 2 more banks to replace the others. Also I had some trouble with an ASUS main board that didn't go well with some type of memory. After buying the recommended brand and type of memory in the manual everything was OK. This was however a very high end machine (i7 Extreme, triple channel DDR3 Nvidia 295GTX, etc.) so maybe it is of more importance that everything works together, I had never had that problem before or since.
