Hopefully your hard drives will be ok, so you will be able to copy their data off onto new drives. The external drive is a great idea, they are very good investments for occasions such as this.

I had a similar thing happen once - new machine assembled, working fine then burning plastic smoke everywhere. I was VERy lucky it was just a trapped usb cable shorting on the chassis.
I still did the proverbial brown trousers moment though.
Hope you can salvage the wreckage
