    Eco? Whats that?

For most, its commonly known and accepted fact that one should always aim for maximizing the Damage done per pec spent, dmg/pec, and this is called "Eco-hunting". Basicly the assumption behind this theory is, that loot is distributed depending on the damage done.

    How it all started...

This is the interesting part... When the game was first launced, there was no L items, no SIB, so dmg/pec was commonly low, as people were still unskilled. Still, even nowdays, most people agree that those were the golden ages of Entropia Universe, loot being good, grass greene and stuff like that. Well... Maybe theres a truth hidden in those stories...

All started when a group of few people (i will not name them), who owned some nice items, these days know as uber items. Mod merc, imk2, mod fap, etc etc etc.
They were the ones to start the myth of eco. They started glamouring on forums and chats how "Eco" these items were, giving them much better loots compared to items with lower eco. This of course included several trades between these persons, and to outsiders this seemed like these people actually were paying thousands of usd for these "eco" items..

This caused massive pike on "eco" items, and MA saw their chance, and created Limited and SIB. What this did, was that it basically seemed like MA was giving more variety to the "Eco" selection..
Nowdays, not many people are against the eco theory.

    Facts

Lets see some facts... MA has NEVER (afaik) given any information that would support the eco theory.. Situation is actually the opposite... Lets see a copy paste text from support case i received from MA...
Welll... What they say, better skills-->better loot.
What they dont say, better ece-->better loot.

And generally, most eco weapons are the low end ones (opalo for example), and MA is telling that using high end items means better loot.

This above is not very convincing, but now im about to reveal the main evidence against Eco.

Once upon a time, in Twin Peaks

Well, one day Marco appeared in twin peaks, carrying this magnificent weapon.
    http://www.entropedia.info/Info.aspx?chart=Weapon&name=Unique_Official_MindArk_PHG_-_v.Marco

Weapon of nearly 9000 dmg/pec, when most items are around 4dmg/pec. Well.. First thought would be, WOW! That must be great gun in hunting! Well.. They asked marco...

Marcos actual statement was, that it wouldnt work on hunting, because it does not generate loot.

In my opinion in this very comment marco told us eco is a myth.
Two reasons why it wouldnt generate loot:

    A) Loot is generated based on Cost To Kill (Ammo+decay), and on marcos gun, only 1 ammo spent and Exceptional durability, it would be very low cost to kill, causing no loot generated.

    B) Loot generated is set seperately on every gun, which means MA can control different guns giving different returns.

In my opinion, these both cases would rule out the "Eco"-theory.

    Just my 2 pecs..

  2. Hm, a lot of questionable conclusions there.

As I have understood, the loot was less fluctuating before which made you last way longer than you can now. I believe this is what made the loot appear "better" before. That's simply an adjustment of the general loot distribution. This does not have to be, and probably ain't, connected to the weapon used.

That a high eco gun would give better (what do you mean with 'better' btw? higher tt value? more rare items?) loots compared to a gun with lower eco sounds just like bullshit to me. What good eco does is cutting the costs.

What I believe they mean by this is by raising your skills so that you can be using better equipment you will be able to hunt bigger mobs. Bigger mobs need more damage dealt (because of more HP) and that is what increase the possibility to get a HoF. I mean, just because you use a big ass gun to kill a small Snablesnot I don't think your chance of hoffing get any bigger.

And about your last example, that Marco's super high damage, super eco gun can't generate any loot and that in particular is the main evidence against eco... Ever thought about that they might simply have turned loot=off on that single gun, because it is not supposed to be used for hunting? And also that doesn't mean loot generated is set seperately on every gun, which you say it does.

And eco being a myth? It's just a measurement of damage done per pec spent, nothing mythic about that.

  3. Nice article. I've also been advised in support cases many times by MA, that better equipment increases the chances of getting more loot (although they do say 'no guarantee'), so this doesn't support the eco theory.

  4. There are so many theories as to why some people do better than others etc. No doubt there are things you can do to increase the TT value received, possibly some people know some of them. From my experience using a knife is not one of them :).

I do find the whole economy thing quite odd, the amount of damage done per pec can only be a guide. What would need to be calculated is how much it costs to kill each type of mob. If mobs did not regenerate that would also be relatively easy but they do and by different amounts, are these values known? Not to me certainly. A mob with high regen is probably more economically killed using a fast high damage (possibly uneconomical weapon) that it is with a slow low damage but very econimical weapon. No doubt there are weapon/mob combinations where it is not possible for a single user of the weapon to ever kill the mob.

Anyone fancy a multi team opalo eomon hunt next year?

  5. Interesting viewpoints either way. I don't think speculation on 'balancing' can be of any harm, and surely it's on the mind of most players. Personally I think it's a mix of the player's deposit/loot profile, and a dose of randomness. I'm sure I made a big long post about it somewhere....:search:

Yup.. I understand and agree the eco as minimizing the costs, but imo the eco has taken ridiculous amount of publicity and the "Uber-eco" stuffs are absolutely over priced.. I mentioned this, back then the ubers manipulated the prices, talking bout eco etc..
