Um so yesterday didn't happen "quite" as I expected in terms of what I was intending to do. But as a sort of "happy accident" of some work I was doing on my Entropia Project, I've brought back the old death routine. The REALLY old players will remember, many many years ago, when you died, you were doomed to wander the land as a ghostly spirit, caught between realities, nigher alive nor dead until you happened to chance upon a revival terminal, where upon you were brought back to the land of the living. During this march of damnation, strange ethereal sounds could be heard, voices from a reality we do not understand. So yeh, I've brought them back :D Of course, I can't bring back the old "wandering around as a ghost" milarki, you are still stuck as a poorly animated corpsical, at best rolling down a hill, but at least now you get to listen to the creepy music again until you are ok to revive. I guess with MA introducing the extra delay on revival, in some ways, this is quite timely. Wistrel PS for anyone really interested, the "music" is file 243219.wav in the old PE music/Sound FX collection
Ahh yeah I remember the creepy death sounds. And the accompanying wandering ghost. Of course because we liked it ‘they’ had to axe it. :(
It's a tricky one, regarding the ghost changed to not being able to move and the TP to RT thing. In terms of game play decisions I can see why they did it. There is a sorta irony though that they recently had to introduce a gradually extending TP to RT delay.... one might think, "why not just bring back the ghost travelling for much the same effect?". What "ghosting" got me at the time was a chance to TP collect without threat of being killed by a mob. One could say this is cheating really, although back then mob agro was insane. You only so much as had to look at a mob and it would attack. These days this isn't an issue though as, either the mobs are avoidable, or you can car/fly your way there, or even use a TP chip (which came later iirc?). I seem to remember though, the reason it was scrapped was because people were using it for PVP and Rig monitoring. Again... one might say this could be achieved these days with a flying vehicle? (although I suppose they could shoot you out of the sky?) Wistrel
It was cool but iirc there also was no mob regen back then. Now if you change one thing, or revert a change that came before other changes, you always have multiple consequences. Like pulling a string from a net. I'm inclined to say I wouldn't mind in this case, but can see how it may not be liked by many.
Well, it doesnt have to be walking around like a ghost collecting tps. in the end the ghost couldnt do that anymore either. It was simply spooky to be a ghost and gave a nice atmospheric touch to being dead. falling down like a puppet is not as eerie.
Kinda miss Albion Mud from my time in it in the 1990s... http://www.topmudsites.com/forums/muddisplay.php?mudid=Ravenger Doesn't appear to be up at the moment, think I read that it's gone for good.... used to have a really interesting death scene that reminded me a lot of this walking around as a ghost idea.
