Entropia's Club NEVERDIE sets new record for most expensive virtual item sale

If you're a frequenter of Entropia Universe, chances are you've heard of Club NEVERDIE, the virtual night spot purchased by John "NeverDie" Jacobs in 2005 for the tidy sum of US $100,000. The club, located on a giant asteroid orbiting the planet Calypso, was history's most expensive virtual item for a number of years until it was surpassed by the purchase of the Crystal Palace Space Station in 2009 (a US $330,000 sale).

Now, an Entropia Universe fansite is reporting that the remaining portions of Club NEVERDIE have been sold to a gamer named John Koma Falun in a transaction valued at US $335,000. EntropiaPlanets, a fansite dedicated to the world of MMOG Entropia Universe, reports that one of the games’ users, Jon Jacobs, has sold a number of in-game properties to another user, John Foma Kalun.

Entropia Universe allows users to convert real world finances to a virtual currency, offering a fixed exchange rate for users who choose to cash-out and convert their virtual currency back. Entropia’s in-game properties, therefore, have a real cash value.

Jacobs, who goes by the in-game name of Neverdie, has made a number of high-profile transactions over the past few years, from the $25,000 sale of his in-game items, to his purchase of a virtual asteroid for $100,000. The purchase of the asteroid, in 2005, was believed to be the most expensive virtual item sale in history. That record was broken by the 2009 sale of the Crystal Palace Space Station for $330,000.

The recent sale, confirmed by Jacobs to the fansite, amounts to a value of $335,000. Jacobs sold a number of bio domes, a mall, stadium and a club to Kalun.

If EVE Online is famous for heists and other virtual crimes worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, the players of Planet Calypso, another MMORPG, have been earning loads of [COLOR=#CC6600 ! important][COLOR=#CC6600 ! important]money[/COLOR][/COLOR] through more diplomatic means. One of Planet Calypso’s asteroids, plus a number of properties within said asteroid, was recently sold for $335,000 (USD). The seller is named Jon Jacobs aka Neverdie, who sold his “asteroid resort” Club Neverdie to John Foma Kalun aka Pesok.

Above is a partial picture of Club Neverdie. Now here’s the mind blowing thing about this sale: like most games in the genre, Planet Calypso – part of the mega MMOG Entropia Universe – lets players earn virtual currency. In Calypso, players can mine, set up shops, and own property which can be rented, thus earning the owner virtual currency. But unlike other MMORPGs, Calypso also lets players exchange their virtual currency to real world money for a fixed rate.

So we don’t know whether Pesok paid Neverdie in virtual currency or cold hard [COLOR=#CC6600 ! important][COLOR=#CC6600 ! important]cash[/COLOR][/COLOR], but even if Pesok did pay the $335,000 using virtual currency, Neverdie can cash that out to real money, which might not be enough to buy a real asteroid, but is surely more than enough reward for playing a video game. If that’s not enough, he sold off a dozen other domed virtual complexes for a total of $300,000, bringing his total [COLOR=#CC6600 ! important][COLOR=#CC6600 ! important]payday[/COLOR][/COLOR] to $635,000. Good god.

Dit record is nu weer verbroken door ene John Foma Kalun. Voor een bedrag van ruim 240.000 euro kocht hij de virtuele club NEVERDIE inclusief stadion, winkelcentrum, zeven 'koepels' en meer.

335 000 dollars pour un astéroïde… virtuel : c'est le montant d'une transaction qui s'est récemment déroulée entre deux joueurs dans le MMORPG Planet Calypso, qui appartient à la plateforme de jeux Entropia Universe.

Entropia Universe fait partie de ces jeux massivement multijoueur dont l'économie ingame a un lien avec l'économie réelle, c'est à dire que les crédits du jeu peuvent être convertis en argent réel, à l'image de ce qui est proposé dans le monde virtuel de Second Life.

Sur Planet Calypso, 10 PED, la monnaie locale, équivalent à 1 dollar : c'est donc pour un montant de 3 350 000 PED qu'un joueur du nom de Jon Jacobs a cédé à un autre joueur nommé John Foma Kalun un complexe spatial installé sur un astéroïde. L'endroit, totalement virtuel, dispose d'appartements, d'un centre commercial, d'une discothèque et d'autres lieux destinés à divertir les adeptes du MMORPG, qui revendique 810 000 joueurs inscrits.

Dans la mesure où le jeu repose énormément sur l'économie et où l'achat, la vente et la location d'éléments y sont monnaie courante, le nouveau propriétaire des lieux pourra tirer parti de son achat et tirer des bénéfices de son achat. C'est tout du moins ce qu'on peut lui souhaiter après un tel investissement dans un bien tout ce qu'il y a de plus immatériel.

There’s big money in online real estate, if you know where to look. The hottest virtual market around today seems to be in Entropia Universe, a space bound MMO best known for having an actual working economy based on real money, which results in headlines like this.
Jon Jacobs, known as Neverdie in the game, recently made $335K selling all his land on a giant asteroid to other parties in the game. This breaks the previous record for an online property sale, which was also in Entropia, where a virtual space station was sold for $330K.
Jacobs has apparently sold other properties as well to the tune of $300K, so his grand total from online space real estate to date is around $665K. How is this possible? Here’s how Entropia works:

Entropia uses a micropayment business model, in which players may buy in-game currency (PED – Project Entropia Dollars) with real money that can be redeemed back into real world funds at a fixed exchange rate.
This means that virtual items acquired within Entropia Universe have a real cash value, and a participant may, at any time, initiate a withdrawal of their accumulated PEDs back into real world currencies according to the fixed exchange rate, minus transaction fees, the minimum amount for a withdrawal is 1000 PED. As a result, revenue of the business is largely generated from activities within the virtual universe. As of 2009, the revenue model has proven to be sustainable and profitable

Could this be a sign of things to come? Billions are already made from in-game purchases of virtual items that are little more than code, but with amounts like this being shelled out, we could see a bigger push toward virtual goods being worth real money. It doesn’t matter if it has no intrinsic value, if people believe it does, and are willing to pay for it, that’s all that really counts. You know, like the stock market.

Entropia Universe does just that, allowing players to exchange ten PED (in-game curreny) for one US dollar and vice versa. Back in 2005, Jon “Neverdie” Jacobs became a famous online personality – and a Guinness World Record setter – when he mortgaged his house to purchase the in-game asteroid that would come to be known as Club NEVERDIE for $100,000. After five years of capitalizing off of his investment, Jacobs recently started selling off parts of the asteroid, and, according to the forums at the fan-site EntropiaPlanets, he has just sold the remaining real estate to player John Foma Kalun for a staggering $335,000.
The property consisted of seven bio domes, the stadium, the mall and the club on Club NEVERDIE. The total value has dethroned the previous record for most expensive virtual item of $330,000 (The Crystal Palace Space Station, also purchased in Entropia Universe), but has yet to be given official recognition.

Entropia Universe, an MMORPG that uses an economy with cash that can be withdrawn as real-life money, has set a record for the most expensive virtual item ever sold, at $335,000, for a zone named Club NEVERDIE.

Entropia Universe is a weird place, even for video games. It’s a free-to-play MMORPG that is referred to by different names every now and then (Project Entropia, Planet Calypso, Entropia Universe) where players can buy PEDs (Project Entropia Dollars) with real-world money, which act as in-game money, and can then be withdrawn back into real-world money. Essentially, if one is dedicated enough and doesn’t mind putting money into the game when necessary, one can turn a profit playing video games.

The game has received mixed reviews throughout its history, from people claiming it’s a boring game and a cash scam, to people genuinely finding the game enjoyable, to other people claiming they’ve made a decent profit simply by playing the game without ever having put money into it in order to get a head start. Regardless of the game’s viability, one thing that is never in contention when it comes to Entropia Universe is that the occasional person pays out the wazoo for a virtual item.

The most interesting factor of this story isn’t that the virtual item set a statistical record, but that there ever was such a big previous record to break. In 2005, player Jon “NEVERDIE” Jacobs bought the “asteroid space resort” for $100,000, becoming the most expensive virtual item ever purchased, beating the previous item’s, Treasure Island (also from Entropia Universe), record of $26,500. The space resort was installed into the game December 19th, 2005 and Jacobs claimed he reached profitability less than a year later on August 18, 2006, from players funding the economy on the space station, which included taxes, apartment sales and shop sales. Three years later in December 2009, player Buzz Erik Lightyear bought the Crystal Palace Space Station for a whopping $330,000, dwarfing Club NEVERDIE’s $100,000 purchase.

Now, as reported by Entropia Planets, Jon “NEVERDIE” Jacobs has sold off the remaining available space in his Club NEVERDIE space resort for $335,000, setting the record for the single most expensive virtual item ever sold to date. The overall sale price of the entirety of Club NEVERDIE’s realty over the years? $635,000. The only reason why this number isn’t being reported around the Internet is because that number wasn’t reached within one sale, as various areas of Club NEVERDIE were sold throughout its lifespan via separate transactions.

The wacky transactions aren’t even limited to large virtual realty or items that are even known to have any use: There’s a mystery egg that has been floating around the MMO since 2006 that people occasionally buy, recently purchased for $70,000, with the hope that it would either do something extraordinary, or could be resold for a profit.

Like I said, Entropia Universe is a weird place–from being referred to by different names, to developer MindArk encouraging real-world cash sales while most other MMO developers quickly banning any participant in such an act, to users making great deals of money off the sale of virtual items, no matter how weird the game’s universe may be, if past trends are any indication, it’s a safe bet we’ll be hearing of a new record for the sale of a virtual item coming from MindArk’s universe sometime not too far down the road.

A new world record for the most expensive virtual item purchase of all time has been set by an Entropia Universe player who dropped $335,000 on in-game properties.

I'm trying to imagine what I could buy with $335,000. A nice house, couple of good cars, a really fantastic summer vacation. Or I could blow it all on pretend stuff like biodomes, a virtual mall, a stadium and a club, which is exactly what an Entropia Universe player by the name of John Foma Kalun recently did.

Kalun bought the properties from fellow Entropia entrepreneur Jon Jacobs, who set an earlier mark for the most expensive virtual purchase back in 2006 when he spent $100,000 on an in-game joint called Club Neverdie. In an interesting twist, Jacobs' record-setting deal from a half-decade ago makes Kalun's purchase seem slightly less nuts: The majority of Club Neverdie is precisely what Kalun now owns.

Jacobs appears to have done quite well with his investment. According to EntropiaPlanets, Kalun bought the bulk of the Club Neverdie property but Jacobs also sold 12 other domes to other players, bringing the total sale value of the Club Neverdie asteroid to $635,000. Not too shabby for something that doesn't actually exist.
What could possess someone to spend that kind of money on imaginary stuff? Entropia Universe lets users buy and sell in-game currency at a fixed exchange rate, which gives virtual items a real-world value and lets players generate real money from the income earned on things like exclusive clubs and other properties. According to Neverdie's original auction listing, the asteroid had a first-quarter 2010 tax revenue of 640,000 PED (Project Entropia Dollars), which converts to $64,000 in meatspace moolah. Nope, that's not too shabby at all.

Yes, one player of MMO Entropia Universe paid another the six-figure sum for a number of bio domes, a mall, stadium and a club. It sets the record as the highest price ever paid for a virtual item.

The player who broke the record is the one who set it, Jon Jacobs (he plays the game under the moniker “Neverdie”). Jacobs previously bought an Entropia asteroid for $100,000.
