Enjoying Amathera mission

Just thought I'd post to say something positive about Entropia for a rare change. For various reasons I just needed some chill time and have of late picked up one of the old Calypso mission chains was working through from yonks back.

I've always liked Amathera, it has a sort of barren lovelyness about it so has always been fun to explore plus of course there's that added edge that someone could shoot you at any moment. Not that I've ever known that happen since the initial access days when people were TP killing the entry point (this was before swimming/flying/boating/surfing was an option, for the newbies here).

Anyhow been following a nice mission that seems to have just the right mix of storytelling, exploration and survival in it. Of course the ubers would take their big gun and tough armour but for a noob like me it's a case of using cunning and the resources at your disposal, be that going on foot, via buggy, VTOL TP or surfboard (I left the chopper and boat on Arkadia... I think). By this I mean to get to the targets in question there is a lot of trying to carefully avoid mobs or other tactics, like agroing spiders then leaping into the buggy to charge headlong for the nearest body of water, leaping out before you reach it and swimming as quickly as you can into the water to get in far enough that the spider doesn't reach you before it drowns.

I've also liked that later sections of the mission have involved some good searching around, not just a simple case of going somewhere but you have to look for something and actually interact with it. I also liked that it's involved sections that require you to go swimming. The first part of which felt particularly well balanced (for me) in that there was only a low density of ripper snappers that I could actually deal with which occasionally attacked while you were diving.

The next bit I'm struggling with a bit more as (for me) it's basically the at sea equivalent of trying to avoid spiders. I've not quite worked out an at sea equivalent of mob baiting though yet but even so, on just a handful of attempts, I've managed to clear 40% of that section. I've yet to figure out a way of "moving the big mobs" though as if I go right close to them, they take a chunk out of my surf board while I'm still on it, but otherwise only attack when I go in the water.

Guess I'm going to have to try something like parking the surfboard near enough that I agro them when I go in the water, waiting till they nearly on top of me, then getting back on it, rinse and repeat a few times then go back. Still, it's been fun trying to figure this stuff out though. Definitely a good challenge.

Of course, I still have that slight sense of dread that this may all culminate in some sort of "go to X, kill Y mobs" bullshit towards the end of the chain, which, given I got no chance against spiders unless I haul ass with a full team, would be impossible for me (and even then, with re-gen, I don't know if noob teams can be effective against big mobs anymore), so for that reason I'm being vague about exactly what mission I'm on (no spoilers please - just let me enjoy my ignorance ^^).

Anyhow, all in all, I'm having fun and it isn't costing me too much.

Dead again... but at least by body isn't totally broken and deformed in a heap... yet

I think I got this mission sitting unfinished since donkeys' ages. Is it still active? Got all crates except the one guarded by Leviathan Stalkers. But it's been years also since the last time I even tried. Iirc I couldn't lure them away as fast as they would return or respawn, took too long to travel back every time after being killed. Maybe it is made for teams.

  3. That picture tells a thousand magical words. Was it one of those jellyfish that got you? I've not seen those on Amethera before.

  4. You make a graceful corpse Wistrel. I usually end ou opposite to that, graceless splayed legs :(
There is a trick with the Leviathans San, you get them to go unreachable. I did that and was able to get the crate, but I have no idea how I managed it.

haha, most of mine are awful too, but dying underwater seemed to give some grace time while you slowly sink. Was rather calming actually. I have a few pictures of some of my better deaths somewhere in the archive.

How does going unreachable help? I always just thought that meant they will hurt you but you can't hurt them due to being stuck... ah... I see... so I gotta stuck them somehow... well that sounds as challenging as any method I guess.

I wasn't finding the return time too bad on a surfboard and surfing is always kinda fun somehow. I do wonder if it's one of those things where you just need to get lucky. I got no idea how I managed to get the first 2 at that location. Later it was the razortooth that was getting me.

Yeh a lot of my missions are old ones I've been not getting round to finishing for years. Yeh seems to still be active/working fine as far as I can tell.

Made it to 4/5 of the underwater crates now. Just a case of getting lucky enough to find ones I not been to while not being bonked by the leviathan.
