Entropia and hacking... is it safe?

Hmm while I take your point that legally no one can stop someone doing whatever on their own PC technically or legally, MA state that you agree not to when accepting the EULA and that you agree to them monitoring this is some way (the "how" or even "if" being a matter for speculation). Presumably if they think someone is breaking that agreement it is their prerogative to withhold your access to the platform, e.g. by account suspension. I'm sure legally if there is money involved one could try and fight such a move but suspect MA would only guarantee the return the TT value of your items and no one really wants to end up in that position. There might be murky waters of course around denying someone access to something but meh... legalities... not really my thing.

I remember the keyboard interface thing. Myself and McCormick were looking into it in another thread. I don't think that one really comes under the EULA though so long as you stay away from Entropia files or Entropia network traffic with servers. Fairly certain it doesn't claim to say you can't mess with/investigate system/other files that Entropia might use. I mean they really CAN'T say that otherwise you start getting into messy waters with different flavours/customisations of windows so on and so forth.

Going back to that one though, while I can't quite remember where we got to with it, I think I remember concluding that Entropia wasn't actually "spitting any raw numbers out" as we'd hoped it would be. Have a feeling it was something like... "while the library does provide routines for rendering text/numbers into the window in a standard manner, the only thing that gets 'communicated' out from Entropia, is a raw bitmap". This actually makes sense as likely, the only thing the keyboard hardware can actually do is receive raw data to display on the screen. So, in theory, if one were to do something with the third party software/driver/dll, or even the hardware for that matter, the best you could do is intercept that bitmap. As you say, you could hit it with OCR though.

Interesting you care about ammo. The thing I thought would be nicest would to have a constant log of your position. I kinda liked the idea of having a map with a spidery line all over it showing where I've been. I seem to remember concluding it would be possible too as the image was always a fixed view from a standard tile set, with a cross hair drawn somewhere on it. So you'd just need to check which tile it was (could probably fingerprint on a few pixels), and locate the cross (trickier) then use knowledge of Entropia's coordinate system to correctly map out a value.

I think that would be pretty cool for no apparent reason... I guess I'm just odd.

I found myself getting curious again,.. at least as far as checking if I still had the files relating to the keyboard lying around. As far as I can tell (without installing) I do. However...

Grant of License and Restrictions. This Agreement grants You the following rights provided that You comply with all terms and conditions of this Agreement. (a) Logitech grants You a limited, non-exclusive, nontransferable license to install and use an unlimited number of copies of the LCD SDK on computers . All other rights are reserved to Logitech. (b) You shall not reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble any portion of the LCD SDK, except and only to the extent that this limitation is expressly prohibited by applicable law.

So even though MA can't come for you with big stick for poking your nose around, Logitech can... but of course Logitech don't have you over a barrel like MA do, or any way to know what you do.

I feel down a hole on the keyboard thing last night.

Turns out I was right. I found someone had made a way to use the keyboard with the autoit language which was quite handy as far as finding out what was actually available and how it is used. Having a read through, in short there are a few functions for connecting/registering that you are a "thing" that wants to send stuff to the keyboard screen as well as the equivalent disconnection ones and only 2 functions that actually "do" anything. One sends a bitmap image to the keyboard, the other allows you to get notified if a button is pressed on the keyboard. There might might have been a 3rd for reading the button state too but it was getting late and confusion was occurring.

Nice tune. Not sure if there is a reference or something there, if there was it went over my head :D Not sure what you mean by not worth it. I guess you mean Entropia is too uninteresting to would be bad actors. You might be right or probably there are other targets. Security by obscurity and all that. I guess hardly anyone knows about Entropia anyhow. I mean "in the grand scheme of things" so maybe it's safe after all. Probably no one cares.

Weirdly this was linked off that video for me... I'm not sure I've ever seen the whole thing. It looks so cool!

If you have kids, or feel like one yourself, it's a must-see! Although I have to say for us at the time, being German and grown up with the original books, it was just like a lo-fi version of the images already stuck in our heads, plus the standard Hollywood dramaturgy. This doesn't make it a bad movie but the books can't be beaten. I don't know the quality of the English translation but if you'd like to give that a try, all of Michael Ende's stories are great.

One of the first movies I remember seeing as a kid. Together with The Goonies, and Gremlins. I ended up buying them all on DVD, for nostalgic reasons.

Goonies is similar for me as with Never ending story. I've definitely seens bits of it but I don't think the whole thing ever in one go. Gremlins though haha yes for sure :D
