Hey people, We noticed an hour and 20 min ago that our forum suddenly turned off and went down. We couldn't figure out why, but then realised, that EntropiaForum, PlanetCalypsoForum, Entropedia and Entropiatracker also was down. The problem lies in a widget with EntropiaTracker, which we now removed. We are trying to get in contact with the other forums to make sure they do the same, to get their sites up running. So far we managed to get in touch with NEVERDIE forum, but not NEVERDIE himself - and we're working on the others. I can't get in touch with Starfinder who is running EntropiaTracker, he is not online anywhere (have him on Skype etc.). Sorry for the inconvenience so far. Have a great evening Lykke UPDATE: Got in touch with Starfinder. He can't do anything because he wasnt near a pc (and it's neos Server, he said he might be working on it) ... Tried several people to get in touch with Neo, but without any success.
To elaborate, EP runs a widget pulling data from entropiatracker.com. That site is down, which in turn caused our site (and apparentyl every other site pulling data from it) to timeout while it attempts to pull this data in.
Yeah, I think you guys were timing out leading to a 404. The others on 711's server's just dont seem to be there at all. No time outs, no 404's etc. So, you guys were timing out because of it, but the others are just not there. A DNS failure. "Query for DNS records for planetcalypsoforum.com failed: Address not available" So, not the widget itself causing the error, other than how it is implemented on your site leading to it timing out your site if it is not available.
No worries, Raven :) It seems to affect every site that somehow pulls data in from ET. We got a hold of StarFinder, but he couldn't do anything seeing he was not near a machine. NEVERDIE has been contacted as well, and his forums seem to have recovered now as well. I do believe we did get a message through to neomaven as well, though I unfortunately cannot confirm that for sure.
It's more as if the serverpark that ET/entropedia/EF/PCF are hosted on dropped off the face of the earth. All sites pull data from ET, and thus end up timing out due to the ET site not responding whenever the other sites try and pull in their data through the ET API.
Ty very much for the update! I was wondering why numerous Entropia sites were down. I was thinking it was a widespread DDoS attack or something. :D
Hmm can you translate that into English please :D Maybe there are multiple problems with those server(s).
The servers that FPC/EF/ET are on have had a DNS faliure therefore unavailable - they dont exist at the moment untill they sort it out. Sites like this one that were pulling data from that server, eg the tracker thing, were affected due to the way that the widget from there works I assume.
Thanks for clarifying. Makes more sense I think. So it's all due to the DNS failure rather than ET that caused the problem...
not sure its a DNS issue, they all resolve fine for me (though dont respond). also question what entropedia pulls from ET. would seem from here that the servers hosting all - stupidly imo - have gone offline, so the tracker is a symptom not a cause. well done for resolving the issue for this site. only higlights how poorly the hosting is being monitored for those other services. over 5 hours offline now? might be the wake up call some need that hosting so many resources in one location isnt so clever. seems Neo isnt very interested or involved any more and the hosting service he is providing is not very professional on this evidence (and not the first time either).
Getting better - domain name is resolving now but still timing out IP address: 67.228.38.240 Host name: planetcalypsoforum.com Alias: planetcalypsoforum.com 67.228.38.240 is from United States(US) in region North America TraceRoute to 67.228.38.240 [planetcalypsoforum.com] Hop(ms)(ms)(ms) IP AddressHost name111510 72.249.0.65 -28810 8.9.232.73xe-5-3-0.edge3.dallas1.level3.net391016 4.69.145.12ae-1-60.edge2.dallas3.level3.net4132022 4.59.36.94softlayer-t.edge2.dallas3.level3.net51866 4.59.36.94softlayer-t.edge2.dallas3.level3.net610107 173.192.18.213po6.dar02.sr01.dal01.networklayer.com7710Timed out 66.228.118.190po2.fcr03.sr04.dal01.networklayer.com8Timed outTimed outTimed out -9Timed outTimed outTimed out -10Timed outTimed outTimed out -11Timed outTimed outTimed out -Trace aborted.
Morning... Yeah.. I spoke with 711 when i got home yesterday.. and I seem to recall him saying something about it being a router at the server park that went down or something. Its a little odd that it was down for so long tho - because there is 24 hr "on location support" meaning a techie is sitting at the server part 24 /7 if something like this happens... And yes.. all the "other forums/sites" that went down was because of them pulling data from ET the way they did (directly implemented in the main code i assume)... So.. yeah.. peter/lykke.. thanks for sobering me up when you called me... took a couple of frantic phonecalls and several shots to "get back" to the party... :)
