EntropiaPlanets wants your opinion

  1. Negativity?

They are just afraid of unpleasant questions - but exactly that, to answer those questions, would help them regain some credibility... there will always be unpleasant questions, to dodge them leads nowhere.

It happened several times already that every "older" player stopped posting on EF for quite a while, next time this happens people DO have an alternative...

MA/FPC will have to deal with EP sooner or later - the age of "711 will cover our asses" is over and with every member that joins EP it will become harder to ignore such requests.

    Sry for off-topic...

I can start compiling my mining runs and post a mining blog (at least it can be done on EP w/o everyone thinking it's just to make MA give you a tower) - if people want to read "yet another mining blog"... mine will be different, that's for sure... i just hope people won't hate me!

  2. Hi, and "Hello all!"

Well, if you ask for it ... ;-)

    Some ideas/ opinions:

IMHO atm EP is much too "cluttered"
    - too many sub and sub-sub forums, makes it hard to navigate and to find what you're looking for. This huge list on the forum overview page is just repelling for first-timers.
There should not be more but maybe "EntropiaPlanets - the Forum", "Entropia Universe - the game", "Other games" and "Other stuff", each of them with a max. of 3 - 4 subtopics. The need of constantly vertical scrolling is evil!

IMHO the layout is a little "suboptimal". A fixed min. width of 1024 isn't much, but for instance my good old notebook doesn't have - and to add to the trouble even at my basic machine I'm not surfing in "full screen mode". I close to always have more then 1 window open, and I want to navigate them by clicking into, and I cannot stand having to read lines as long as in an 1024 layout - this hurts my eyes, and I just hate it.
Not in vain there's something like a "gold ratio" in book printing, and not in vain close to all newspapers are using columns for easy readability.
An enforced "long lines" layout for web pages like yours (approx. 95 chars for me) is widely regarded as retarded, and will not make your readers happy. The need of constantly horizontal scrolling is evil!

For my feeling here's a little bit too much "swapped over" from ER. I cannot help but recognize to have to read the same bickering, fighting, name calling, "venting off" and nonsense as there, at least for a quite huge part. This doesn't make me happy.
Nobody is interested in such, and it just creates bad karma.

I'd really like a forum where we'd not need to fear to be censored, but in my humble opinion there should be strong rules to enforce a civilized behavior, a minimum of ortographic diligence and at least a little common courtesy. Maybe I'm just too old for this world ...

Why not enforce a minimum post length of 200 chars, excluding quotes? Or maybe have a look at this forums rules, for instance? It's something quite different, but it works. I'm really sad they have abandoned the rule they once had, was something about this:
If you have the possibilities (I don't know ...) why not offer to host resources important to the community? This could give you an edge!
Why not host maps, screen grabbers, loot analyzing spreadsheets and such? There's quite some of this stuff, and afaik most of the makers have to host it themselves on their personal servers atm. As mentioned, no idea if the server space/ bandwidth costs would be acceptable - but such a central point for EU related resources is lacking, and could be a gimmick getting ppl here.

Well, guess this was my major first impressions. Sorry to have to be this negative, but you asked for input.

I'd really like to see EP prospering, it could succeed to become a place for the common participants, beyond the Ubers getting cared at EF, and the spoiled brats marauding at ER. My best wishes to you!

    Have fun!

Lykke TheNun In Loot We Trust

Hey :) thank you for helping out - it is very valued, and we didn't make this thread just for people to tell us it's all nice and dandy ;)

I'm not technical, but this one I will reply on.

In the beginning I agree, we had too much negative overfload and people replying respectless to each other. By striking down and first temp ban those people and after, when it shows they did not understand this is not a new ER (nor is it a new EF - we're not aiming in any of those directions) we had to perm ban them. This is actually quite a shame because we hoped we did not have to do this, but unfortunately necessary if we do not wish to have a lot of negative attitude on EP. We wish this place to be for everyone and not for a few or for people to be afraid of stating their opinions or for posting because of some personal stalkers etc.

When this is said I actually personally believe the forum is becoming quite positive. Not everything can be rosa - people are allowed to discuss matter here which might not be that pretty. We truhly believe there should be room for that, which is also why we made special sections like The Black Hole which you can easily turn off if you do not wish to read the posts from there(as you can always both block and close down forumsections in the menu if you do not wish to have everything open and filling a lot. Personally I closed down a lot of forums, because I'm most interested in 'Todays posts' and 'New posts' and have no reason to keep everything visible. Just a suggesion, if all the subforums annoys you).

If I can share my humble opinion, I find that 'other forums' to be turning far much negative than the way we're heading here, which is quite positive - and one thing I believe is a part of this is peoples attitute, helpfullness to make this happen and the fact other things can be discussed aswell. Combined with our try to provide you with constant positive/semi positive (at least constructive) news about both EU and the world outside.

EP is of course for the game but mostly for the gamers ;)

  4. Hi Lykke,

you're replying to the part that was of least importance to me, and to one that I'd maybe wouldn't have formulated such after deeper thoughts. Plz lemme explain:

I don't have any problem with the way you're doing this now.

I had an initial problem some weeks ago when I first came here, finding posts after posts of quite some of the same ppl that IMHO participated to make ER the unpleasant place it's IMHO now.

It seems to have changed, some ppl I had on ignore on ER are writing interesting posts here, and my initial fear of EP becoming a second ER has been proved as wrong.

So I kindly ask for pardon for writing this part of my post in a manner really not exactly matching my up-to-date feelings, but instead expressing "old" concerns. My fault.
Judging the forum climate from just before my post and following there's nothing to complain, and it has been a bad choice of me to mention it.
At least I hope with linking this other forums rules I might have been able to give ideas - this forum was the best game fan forum I ever participated, even if I'm since long not active there anymore.

But I'd really like to hear your (the EP makers) opinions concerning the others parts I posted of:

    • the cluttered interface
    • the evil long lines, and
    • the possibility to host EU related tools
I understand it's not your job caring of such, but maybe you can get your Castorian Enblade ButtPrick out of your storage and treat them ppl responsible a little?

Anyway, a big Gratz to your recent 7K Mannell shoes, and:

    Have fun!

    Hey,

Sorry for not replying earlier, but I've been mighty busy with some upcoming features. I fully intend to use the feedback gathered in this thread when most of that is behind us.

We have been thinking about the "clutter of sub forums", and how to restructure things into something that would consume less space. I'll try and see what can be done with that somewhere in the near future, and we most likely will try and merge a couple of the different categories and subforums together to come to things a bit more cohesive.

As for the "retarded long lines", we have tried experimenting a bit with that before, in order to try and find a format that works, but it seems that unfortunately there will never be a "one size fits all" setting. What I could try and do is to create a copy of this theme, and try and tweak that to be somewhat less wide. The problem I can see with that is from that moment on, I might have to do everything regarding layout twice, and undoubtedly, will end up forgetting to update one of the two.

As for hosting tools, we have approached a few of the makers of the more widely used tools, but found them to be not really interested. If, however, people have things they would like to see a host for, we are more than willing to provide them with space if it makes sense for the community. We have hosted some of the larger files from the VUs here in the past, and we would gladly help out in any possible way. Occassionally, I will approach those who provided interesting spreadsheets etc, but it's extremely easy to miss out something in the process.

If you know of any of the particular tools where the creator has an issue with hosting, feel free to point them our way. We can host PHP applications running on mySQL databases, and out of the box, we can host anything that is compiled and does not require additional installation.

Again, I will collect the input provided here and go over things as soon as my schedule allows for it. I would prefer to now finish up what I started and are mostly done with, before making any new changes, though, for obvious reasons.

*Disclaimer: This post includes buzzwords, forgive me. Some parts might sound lecturing, that's not intended. It also includes criticism, which is always a double-edged sword when it's concerning a product people create with enthusiasm and effort, don't take it personal. I'm writing this post because I like EP and I want to see it succeeding and the effort being rewarded.

I'm just listing 'issues' I noticed in a non-particular order without claim for completeness

    - The index.php page is not really well structured and appealing. It has a disadvantageous signal-to-noise ratio. Many people decide (consciously or unconsciously) whether to use a service or not by the appeal of the front page.

    - The bars (logo, menu bar, banner) are occupying too much space

    - The color(s) of the logo bar and the background color are not fitting too well, you might consider the combination analogous but it's really a border case, a good example for an similar but more appealing analogous combination is the actual google.com page

    - The menu bar is is not really well structured and appealing. Might be better making it a sidebar with each menu item using a micro icon in addition.

    - The menu bar and the left column are both featuring a login option, this is a kind of redundancy that should be avoided. Generally good to consider Occam's Razor

    - The left column is a place too 'valuable' to fill it with low demand needs such as 'Stats', 'Birthdays', Calendar, ...

    - There might be more 'low demand needs' located on the page, getting rid of them or placing them somewhere else would enable a assymetrical 2-column layout which is not a bad thing

    - Generally a hierachy of needs should be set up and the layout should derive from that, applying general design 'tools' such as the Rule of Thirds, the Gutenberg Diagram, ...

(- High demand needs, would be menu, login,... and IMO MA/FPC news, interviews,...)

    - Regarding the forum layout I completely agree with Xandras post, as a reference how to improve just have a look at the forum provider's forum: http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/

    - Beware of the feature creep! Deliver one of them in a great quality before introducing another

    - Beware of the mission creep! Well, define the project, set up a development plan, ...

    - Regarding the wiki I agree with what Narfi said in this thread

    - Pay attention to consistency between the different modules (wiki, forum, ...), consisteny is functions, style, ...

    - Concentrate on your strengths, like forum & wiki on one platform, the
    planets approach, ...

    - Be quick or de dead, do it now, it needs change asap or I fear EP has already hit its peak. Most members of the EU community (interested in forums, wiki,...) probably had a look at EP and rendered their judgement. ("You never get a 2nd chance to leave a 1st impression.")
So set up a further detailed mission statement, design document, development plan, ... Acquire manpower and expertise and rework the whole thing. Cooperate, advertise and become EUs #1 community & information platform.

Any further discussion, input, help needed... rely on the community :grouphug:

Hey :) great with some graphic inputs aswell - will definitely be looked at when we integrate the new version of the vbulletin (which we already bought, but we're waiting for updates of the other features we have too, not to mess it all up)

    :)

  8. As a newbie to this game, I kinda like this place. It is a small forum. I dont really know any people yet, Still this seems like a good place to start for me. If i would go to the main forum, U are basically flooded with information, I am going to stay here as long as i stay with entropia i think ^^

I think it is a great idea with adopt a newbie, It is a great way for us to learn the ropes in the game and actually stay within the game,

Still keep up the good work, ! Thank you

  9. Tass, most of the points you bring up do apply to EF as well (which is still the biggest forum) - i.e. the size of the header (including logo, ads and main menu) - the header size looks very different tho if you use a higher screen resolution than 1024x768.

I think you should cut down on throwing around phrases like "occams razor" and "mission creep" (you messed up the links btw  ) - this just comes across like "bashing coz i can" and instead focus on providing concrete detailed suggestions (do you have better options?) - what is important in your opinion, what do you think belongs on the main page in which order, yada yada...?

Most of the things you mention are not like this out of pure randomness - the used version of vBulletin demands a certain layout and limits the possibilities - im not a friend of the 3-column "holy grail" layout either, but i think it is one of the most common vB setups out there, not sure if some of the modules will work with a different layout (or make sense, like the expiring auctions bit, which has a right to be there only as a quick info thingie, not meant to occupy much space)

And your citation of occams razor is completely out of place btw - occams razor doesn't apply to redundancy (parsimony in the sense of less assumptions, not in the sense no redundancy), im not sure if you understood the basic concept behind it.

Hey :) Thank you for the very nice words - it is great to hear that new people find the place nice to hang out. We hope we also in future will be able to provide you with useful and helpfull info, tools etc.

    Happy day :)

  11. Might not be exactly flattering but what i like about this forum is it's relative obscurity and general scope.

All i need to do is log on, click on new posts and i find out anything of note that happened. No endless noobie threads, no army of people playing their own distorted version of the game and waking is shock time and time again when entropia doesn't emulate it, no pro bono life and game coaches, etc.

Sure if it were my forum I'd tend to appreciate the traffic but as it is I'm more partial to actual content.

And now I'm going to attempt to be helpful. :P
EF is not interesting because of the huge number of users. Those who require an audience rarely say anything of consequence. EF is interesting because of a very small number of people who satisfy their own curiosity and are kind enough to share the results. Sadly, and understandably, they are a minority, none of the others feel the urge to share... and i can't say i don't understand them, there's nothing like offering an informed opinion in a rare moment of kindness only to be buried alive under a wall of irrational, emotional, uninformed opinions who feed off each other to create canon.

Personally i would try to come up with ways to help such people and activities. Ways to input and display data, incentives to do so, etc.
I would even do a Q&A subforum (heavily moderated), where a number of select people, defined by more than their willingness to waste their time, could answer game related questions and curiosities. I think i saw Knuckles do something similar a few years back (though in the interest of reading an answer it was less moderated). I don't mean Q&A as in the "celebrity" interviews though, i really don't care why some dress in pink or what others were drinking when they chose their names.

Sure it's hard and in many ways redundant, not to mention that my tastes are probably in the minority, it would just be nice to see this forum grow without rivaling the other for the position of entropia's IMDB.

Thanks for the additional feedback :)

We can easily juggle around pretty much any of the individual modules on the frontpage. We can move them left, right, middle, or remove them altogether.

As for the menubars, some of the stuff there is dynamically added to the menu, and so we have SOME control over it, but typically not too much. I can prolly try and dive deeper into it with my recently gained knowledge into the whole vB system.

We do have a tendency to start creating things, and release them while maybe not 100% correct. Take the wiki for example. We simply do not have the time or knowledge to fill that completely, so we hope that in due time, our userbase will fill in those parts they think are vital. The way the forum is intended is to grow, slowly, but firmly into a massive tome of Entropia knowledge, where all the info is linked. As for styling or providing addional fucntionality, the wiki product is drasticaly different than the vB forum, and we are somewhat limited by that. I think the database setup of the wiki actually poses to be quite a limitation, but we hopefully will be able to somehow figure something out, which would enable us to bind stuff even tighter together.

We have tried doing that with some functionality already, and as the forum grows and expands, this will become more and more obvious. The endgoal we have in mind is that if you see a particular piece of information, you will be able to find everything there is to know about it with a few clicks of your mouse. I.e. You watch the latest auction list scroll by, and see an item you wish to know more about. You click on it, and get taken to the wiki page for that item. There you see the BP that is used, one more click, and you find the ingredients. Another click, and you find where to find the ingredients, the markup for it and links to discussions in the forum, etc. etc.

Hopefully before the end of this week, you will be able to see another cool example of a nicely integrated tool requiring no additional login information ;)

Might be true or not, EF shouldn't be the benchmark. ;) But on EF you can see a 'tidier' top menu bar for example.

Sorry for the messed up links, was quite in a hurry when typing, corrected them now. Well, in my disclaimer I was asking to forgive me the buzzwords ;) By adding the links to those concepts to my few words I intended to give a further explanation/illustration/food for thought, ...

While it's quite quick and easy to mention the 'issues' making suggestions for 'small' improvements is a little difficult. The whole thing has to be dealt with in a proper design process trying different options and making a lot of decisions. Nevertheless I made some suggestions.

"Occam's razor ... is the principle that 'entities must not be multiplied beyond necessity'" So in my opinion you can apply that to redundancy which I didn't even intend to do. I added Occam's razor in respect of its common application in design, maybe this link is better.

It's absolutely understandable that you don't have the time, therefore "acquire manpower" was one of my points.
Regarding style there are possibilities to achieve consistency between the different modules but as far as I see it now there is not even consistency within the wiki being one of the modules. For example all tables in the wiki should share one style and it would be no problem at all to make the table header on the wiki and the post header on forum the same color.
I'm still not talking about the content but the structure. I really think a kind of styleguide is needed. Otherwise it could all end up in a mess.
This and your statements about another wiki software and changes that are about to come is not really motivating to edit articles right now. Because I just fear all the effort might be in vain.

Well... I don't know... do you get what I mean?
I really like EP and appreciate the effort of all people contributing to it. In my opinion it has not necessarily to expand to be successful, but it definitely has to improve to be successful. I'm willing to help and contribute but on the other side my time is also kind of limited.

Thanks again for your comments :)

My statement regarding the wiki and working on the database shouldn't have too much impact on the front-end, and all information would be kept, so no worries there :) As for new features, they also should not impact the wiki in any way.

I'll see if I can do something about the layout of the tables, etc, a little down the road. Bringing people on board is what we have been trying, but maybe we just need to offer some form of payment. However, at this very moment, we simply do not have the luxury of money to throw at things, meaning I'll have to do things myself, or rely on volunteers to help out :)

I just did a pretty quick shuffling of some of the forums in an attempt to consolidate and compact things a little.

    • The Professions forum has been renamed to Professions and Skills, and now also hosts the Real Estate and Skills subforums.
    • The Hardware category has been removed, and the subforum of it has been moved under Technical.
    • The Black Hole has been moved down to under Off Topic.
    • The Mobs and Flora forums have been added as sub forums under a single Flora and Fauna forum.
    • The Virtual Law sub forums have been moved under Entropia Universe / Misc.
    • Featured Forums has been moved as a subforum of Planet Calypso.
Further thoughts (please tell me whether this sounds reasonable or just dumb):

    • Combine Items and Professions. I.e. Hunting and Weapons, Mining and mining tools, Crafting and crafting resources, etc.
Any feedback based on these changes, or further suggestions you might have? Feel free to let us know. We will soon work on some of the other suggestions. This seemed like a quick (and easy) win :)

Yes some of the links on the front page! I really need to take 30 second before I post for proof reading.

  19. Some minor things we did today to further improve the forum (in random order):

    - In our auction system, the field to fill in your full avatarname now points to the profile field also used for the tracker, in order to avoid having multiple instances of your avatarname all over the place.
    - New posts earch results now should remain active longer.
    - In the navigation bar, we reduced the size of the welcome message by hiding the EPD Credits balance as well as the "Last time logged in" message.
    - Various behind-the-scenes improvements on the tracker system. We hope to release an updated version of the client soon. In the meantime, the tracker code for the forum integration has been optimized and performance has been improved on it, as well as minor updates to the display functions.
    - Added a few new links to the frontpage links section. Under MindArk: EntropiaPlatform.com (showing what seems to be a trailer video for the Dotman/CRD platform); under forums: EntropiaUniverse.pl, EntropiaForum.pl.

Tonight, we will experiment with implementing a slightly less high version of the EP logo, and see if we can reduce the size of our banners somewhat in order to put more relevant information on the page.

As suggested in this thread, we now implemented a mobile skin that is supported on iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, and some of the Nokia phones.

We ended up picking one that catered to all those devices, and still looked half decent. It uses a front-end app, which comes with a free version and a 2.99 USD full version (which allows replying). I have tried the app myself on my iPhone, and I have to admit it is quite intuitive.

Here's their own salespitch for the product:

As always, your feedback and suggestions are most welcome.
