EntropiaPlanets wants your opinion

  1. My first - and over-riding - impression of EP is that it's more demanding on my PC than the other forum is. I can hear the fans suddenly roar into life whenever I come here! This is pretty important if, like me, you like to keep a few reference sites open whilst playing the game, and your PC isn't really up to much.

Why the difference? Is it the platform, or the ads? if the latter, can something be done to make the forum independant of advertising revenue (A "donate" button?)

    jay :)

That sounds odd. IS it when you go to a specific page, or the forum as a whole?

We use the vBulletin built-in hook to Google-ads (not sure what EF uses), a third party banner rotator based on AJAX, and supposed to be low-performance requiring. We use the same forum software as EF (not sure about the specific versions, though).

We do, however, run quite a bit of specialised inhouse logic on certain parts of the site, so I can imagine some additional memory required there, though by no means enough to kick in additional fan-power.

I really cannot pinpoint anything without knowing more :( Perhaps we ought to try and work something out in PM? I could try and help you by supplying some additional info for you which might help us debug the cause of the problem.

As suggested earlier in this thread, we cleared up the top navbar a bit. We removed the individual listings for the Yellow Pages, Chat, and Auction, and grouped them together under a dropdown menu called "Ep Tools".

Should you have turned off the JavaScript menus, these will still be listed next to one another, but grouped together now instead of spread across the navbar.

As you probably noticed, we switched a few things in the layout. I apologize if things seems a little odd, but when I was implementing the ew look, I ran into a few issues that caused things to take quite a bit longer than anticipated.

We hope you think the new skin looks as cool as we think it does. Most of the work has been done by wizzszz, with minor adjustments by myself. One of the posters mentioned the top took up a lot of space, so we merged the logo into the navigation bar, gave it a bit more science fiction look by overlaying it with a transparent image and ajdusted the font colours to make things look a bit more in place.

The breadcrumb has been moved to the center of the screen, and also been recoloured.

The banners have been reduced in size to further bring down the size of the top of the forum.

Everything combined should ensure you can see more content, rather than the screen being filled with the logo, navigation menu and banners.

As before, feedback is most welcome :)
