October 24, 2010 – yet another successful season of the Entropia Universe World Boxing Championships (EUWBC) tournament came to an end, leaving only the winners of each division standing. As the boxing ring at Billy’s echoes a silence, memories continue to filter through the minds of those who participated. MASTER OF CEREMONIES When it comes to event organization and promotion, one name continually comes to mind – Oleg – and if you are not familiar with this person, then you might be living under a rock. Oh, you are? Then let me help you along here for a moment. You can discover more about Oleg from his Who’s Who profile published on June 30, 2009. It gives you insight into this multi-talented, multi-skilled individual who has brought our universe an eclectic array of event enjoyment. In February of 2008, Oleg created his event entity, appropriately named Entropian Events, and has provided event management, promotion and design for Entropia Universe ever since. You can check out a list of events here. A HELPING HAND Oleg wasn’t alone in his organization and production of the 2010 EUWBC. He had an assistant who made it much easier for him this year. That would be Thierry “Rag” Of Grimbergen from the Perseus society. Rag was Oleg’s right-hand man when it came to keeping the flow of activities running as smoothly as possible. This meant stepping in to call the matches, or scanning participants during rounds to make sure that everything remained fair. It also meant contacting people if necessary, and of course, fielding questions both from participants and spectators alike. Rag is commended for his dedication, time and effort to help make EUWBC 2010 a success. AND SO IT ALL BEGINS On August 21, 2010 – Oleg announced the third annual EUWBC tournament, again sponsored by First Planet Company (FPC), along with EntropiaPlanets.com (EP) and Globex Designs, Inc. First and second place prizes included the following: FIRST PLACE PRIZE Unlimited Loughlin Smacker Two – (FPC) Valkyrie MK1 – (EntropiaPlanets.com) Personalized Forum Signature – (Globex Designs, Inc.) SECOND PLACE PRIZE Genesis Power Claw MK6 (L) – (FPC) EntropiaPlanets Premium Membership – (EntropiaPlanets.com) This is also the first year that the EUWBC introduced a Society Championship Division where individuals scored points for their society that were totaled over the course of the tournament. The prize for the winning society is a custom-made virtual commemorative plaque created by Globex Designs, Inc., which is a graphic file that can be displayed on the society’s website, used as a signature, or uploaded to signs or screens within Entropia Universe. It wasn’t long before Entropians started registering for the event, and grew to become a participant group of approximately 160 individuals ready to take on opponents for the grand prize. There was great anticipation to see who they would be facing in the ring, but it wasn’t until nearly a month later when first round picks were revealed. EUWBC LAUNCH PARTY On Saturday, September 18th, Oleg held the EUWBC Launch Party at Billy’s where the First Round Picks became a reality. However, some automatically advanced to Round 2 and would have to wait to see who they would be facing based on Round 1 results. There was no mistake that everyone was anxious to get the tournament under way, but they wouldn’t have to wait long. EUWBC 2010 kicked off on Saturday and Sunday, September 25th and 26th, and thus, the battle to survive in respective divisions toward capturing or defending a title began. LIVE BROADCAST The entire tournament was broadcast live over MindStarRadio, except for a couple of missed matches due to real life commitments. Unfortunately, the 30-40 second satellite delay each of the radio stations endure does not allow for instant broadcasting, so it not only made it tricky to coordinate coverage as close as possible, but also provided some entertaining moments. I held position on a platform on the back side of the ring at Billy’s which quickly became the official dance floor. Many joined me to rock out to adrenaline-pumping beats while supporting their favorite contestants, while others kept the chat flowing non-stop, which of course can also be quite entertaining. Some of the matches were nail biters, and yours truly was fully engaged. At times I was holding my breath when both contestants were down to their last thread of health. I also became quite animated and overly excited on-air other times when the excitement was just too much to contain my composure. If you missed this event this year, I highly recommend that you either register to participate next year, or at least come to support the contestants and get involved with the excitement as a spectator. It’s absolutely worth it. SO WHO ARE THE WINNERS Following are the divisions that specify required health range, as well as the first and second place winners. Some were quite evenly matched and gave us nail biting moments during each round, and others made it clear from the start who the dominant fighter was. SOCIETY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION As mentioned earlier, this is the first season the EUWBC introduced a Society Championship Division, and the winning society was WildD3amons with 217 points. No one even came close with Pyrates of Calypso far behind in second place with 105 points, and Irken Invaders on PoC’s tale with 97 points. There were no prizes other than for first place, but there was a great showing with 17 societies in all participating in this new division for 2010. This was a very exciting season, and thanks goes not only to Oleg for his dedication to bringing this championship tournament to the community every year, but also to his assistant Rag, and the many Entropians who came out to get their asses beat … or not … depending on how many times you ended up licking the dust off the ring floor. I have to say though, that the intermission activities were just as entertaining. It’s always a downer to see exciting events like these end, but there’s always next year! I’ll leave you with a little nostalgia! >
