UPDATE 10:30AM PST: Patrick Klepek here with a brief update on Hulu Plus. Sony has refused to acknowledge whether or not PlayStation Plus is required to view Hulu Plus on your PlayStation 3. "We don't comment on rumors and speculation which is all that is at this point," said a Sony spokesperson to me this morning, after having been presented with the most recent PlayStation Plus evidence. "We will have more information on Hulu Plus coming to the PS3 in the near future." Reading between the lines, if Hulu Plus wasn't required, this should have been settled. Signs are pointing to Sony adopting Microsoft's strategy of placing media content behind their new service. ORIGINAL STORY: As announced yesterday, Hulu Plus is coming to your PC, iPod, game console and other devices. For $9.95 a month, you'll be able to watch Hulu's programming anywhere. According to the Hulu launch trailer you see below, Hulu will be coming to the PlayStation 3 in July. It looks like Hulu Plus will require a subscription to Sony's new PlayStation Plus to work. The info comes from Technologizer, who located some source code on Hulu's site that reads: “The instructions below will help you install Hulu Plus on your PS3. Note: you must be a subscriber of the PlayStation Plus Network.” It's not confirmed, but it looks like two different "Plus" subscriptions will be required to watch Hulu through your PS3. The grand total cost: $170 a year. Before you get angry, consider this: Netflix requires a Gold membership on your 360, and when Hulu comes to Microsoft's system, it will require a Gold account as well.
