A Swedish software house (no, not THAT Swedish software house) developed a network component that allows game developers to spread a game's workload across several servers to perform faster number crunching. The company, MuchDifferent, is so confident in its product (dubbed PikkoServer) that it intends to organize a 1,000 player battle of players and developers. The previous record apparently is set at 399 simultaneous users, so they certainly do aim high. The game Man vs Machine is a browser-based FPS, running on the Unity 3D engine, but according to the Swedes, the PikkoServer product is capable of running any engine (I cannot help but wonder if this includes CryEngine, as I can think of at least one MMO that could use some improved multi-player capabilities ;) ). For 23 Euros per ticket, you can ensure yourself a spot (100 available. The others will be freely offered on a first-come, first server basis) in the fight. All you'll need is a PC or MAC with a web browser. All proceeds of the event will go to charity. More info? Man vs Machine PikkoServer
