Saw this on http://www.nextisland.com/index.html today. EDITOR UPDATE: Next Island's ex-producer Harold Sipe and Next Island's ex game content designer Meg Stivison commenting on this latest turn of events:
So to start on Next Island you now have to create your account on Planet Calypso (and thus end up putting money straight into MA's daughter company)? If anyone still was in doubt whether or not it's a good idea for MindArk as a platform provider to directly manage a planet as well, or whether there is any favoritism when it comes to the different planets and planet partners, here's your answer.
What do you expect them to do though? NI isnt actively developing and has no support for new players there, it would be a determent to the universe to keep spawning OJs there.
Well I agree they should get OJ's away from NI, but like Peter said MindArk (who apparently is in control now for real) should not favor any other planet. So instead of pointing players to Calypso, they should have a list of other planets on that page people can choose from with a short description of what the planets are about.
It'd have been different if they simply removed Next Island altogether. Now they are basically using whatever efforts were put into Next Island, both in regards to design, story-line and marketing, and essentially (ab)use it to drive more traffic to their own planet. That's on top of all the other crap they put in place to make the life of their planet partners more difficult. MindArk, directly or indirectly through their daughter company managing Planet Calypso is plain and simple not a desirable situation, as time and time again they prove they are unable to handle the responsibilities that come with it, and are actively working against their partners by wanting to have their hands in the Calypso cookie jar. Fact.
Aw, I still had some hope for NI. Last year there where multiple teams of EU players and investors in talks with David Post, looks like nothing came out of that. Rumors are that at least... ...one of the initiatives has been blocked by David Simmonds before it even started due to personal antipathies ...another initiative was fruitless due to by David Post's illusions ...another initiative after a few talks was asked to work out a detailed concept but in the process of doing so they didn't get any replies to their requests for comments and so they stopped All really sad stories. What we now see might be the results of a deal between David Post and Planet Calypso AB. In any other case the act of asking all people interested in NI to become Planet Calypso accounts is a prime example of the platform provider fucking over their planet partners in advantage of their own planet - it would so easy to list all current planets and let people decide which one to choose instead of NI. Damn, NI for me always was the planet with the greatest potential, but looks like it's finally gone.
No surprise there, time and time and time again MA has shown favoritism towards their daughter company. If I was a PP I'd cash out and run for the hills.
Yes besides all the EU bashing here, I have to say I like that MA is finally doing something with NI. I can't wait to see what they do with it next. Shows MA does do something good here. all Welcome to continue to bash EU...
Oz I think you misunderstand, most people are not negative about EU but about Mindark and the way they run things.
I have to agree with RAZER here (and some others of course), that it's not about "bashing EU" whatsoever, but a continued process of critical thinking regarding the decision-making being made by the platform developer (MindArk) and just how damaging it has been over time, and also, how it continues to create barriers for other Planet Partners. We also continue to say that there's fun to be had in our universe, despite the frustrations that we experience time and again, but when you take a very close look ... I mean a really close look at the variables that come into play here, I don't see how it could be made any clearer what the bottom-line is for MindArk. In my opinion, and based on my experiences on the inside as an official of a PP, as well as the inside network I've had for so many years, there is no way in hell that MA is going to be fair about anything when it comes to the PPs, and Calypso will always come first. There's division between MA and Calypso on paper only, period, and MA's behavior continues to verify and confirm that loudly and clearly. The only PP that I feel has any chance at all of succeeding because of their relationship with MA is Arkadia, but there is still struggle there as well. MA's favoritism over Calypso will never stop, and there will always be those barriers created in favor of Calypso, which I have seen happen far too often, and things that have happened behind the scenes that would just make your damn hair curl, so OZ, it's NOT about EU, but about the continued unprofessional and incompetent behavior and decision-making of the platform developer, plain and simple. I have a feeling that we're going to be witnessing quite a few more things that will be revealing, and then maybe some will get it. We love the game and the concept and potential, but many of us feel that the wrong people are at the helm to take it anywhere, and are too damn biased against their own planet to afford others making huge investments to have the chance required to really see their vision realized. This just makes me ... let me think about that for a minute.
It's very simple people..if you do not like how the game is going or EU then maybe it's time for you to leave since all you can seem to do is put down the game left and right and get banned from other forums due to your constant bitching about how the game was at one point in time in your frame of mind. Now, lets get back on topic and talk about what you think will be next with NI?
I think that's the completely wrong approach. It's a proven fact that the current EU cannot attract enough people spending enough money to feed the number of people developing it. Even "bitching" contains information, valuable information that can help developers to improve a game and make it enjoyable for a bigger audience. From that point of view "bitching" is something even people who think the current EU is the greatest game of all time should embrace. There's nothing less at stake than the future of EU including what players have "invested". To ensure EU will be still around in a couple of years every woman and man is needed, those who sing hymns of praise but those who "constantly bitch" as well. Or to say it with Johnny Depp: "If you don’t like seeing pictures of violence towards animals being posted, you need to help stop the violence, not the pictures." However, there are indeed many positive aspects to be found in and around Entropia Universe that might get too little attention on EntropiaPlanets. And since the approach mentioned above is definitely not limited to the game, if you don't like the amount of negativity on EntropiaPlanets please help to increase the share of positive attitude on EP.
It's very simple OZ, if you don't like the level of critical thinking that goes on with regard to how some members at this forum evaluate and analyze the state of the universe, then you too have a choice to not read the posts, or to leave as you have suggested we should do with EU because of our points of view. What I think you're having difficulty with, is the "fact" that we DO enjoy the game despite the frustrations that we have to endure over and over again, and we have also made many a positive post about the experiences that we have, but you seem to overlook that. Also, there are a few of us who have incredibly valid data and information that is extremely confirming with regard to the evolution of this game, and just what happens behind-the-scenes that creates barriers for the PPs that cause them to go back to the drawing board and redo already valuable time and invested development because MindArk impulsively and without critically thinking things out, decide to make a change, which usually ends up being for their and Calypso's benefit most. I was an official with Cyrene for 7-1/2 months prior to launch and know first-hand what the challenges are, and what they continue to be despite effort and conviction to see a vision through. If I didn't care about certain people, nor give a rat's ass what would happen to me, I would SO write a tell-all of everything I know, with documented proof, and then let's see who's telling who to leave the damn game. I have too much respect for certain people, but absolute ZERO for MindArk and their dysfunctional management strategies that really hurt not only the Planet Partners, but the players, and especially the investors. Obie and I still enjoy our exploring, but lately, even during those moments, we have consistently and increasingly experienced more challenges, and at times it's just a pain in the ass to even try, despite both of us having excellent computers. Obie and I have been together a year now, and our experiences have progressively gotten worse. He builds mega computer systems for his clients, and I have a rather souped-up rig, so it's not our equipment. If you want to be a fan-boi, that is absolutely your choice, and you have the right to express your opinion or perspective at this forum, but (IMO), it's not acceptable to do it with rudeness and not respect the opinions of others based on their experience over the years and what they bring to discussion that is totally based in critical thinking, rather than just attacking everyone for their opinions. Also, we are not just talking about how the game was in the past, we evaluate the ever-evolving game dynamics and analyze the effects of such on Planet Partners, Players, and Investors, and contribute constructive substance, but I guess you can't see that either.
I agree that OJ's should not be spawning on Next Island, because there are issues with newbie missions and other things, but ... what I would not expect, is that MA would boldly require new players to create their avatars on Calypso, rather than creating an EU account and choosing which planet of origin they would like (excluding Next Island since it's an "Outpost" now), and stop the favoritism toward Calypso. They constantly state that MA and Calypso are two different entities, and on paper (technically) that is true, BUT ... we all know that it doesn't work that way for real, and that Calypso is quite favored in many ways, which I could SO list without batting an eyelash, and would probably make some of you take more notice. I think it would be a good thing for new players to create an EU account, have something available that describes each of the planets that they can choose from, and give them the freedom to do so, rather than now being required to choose Calypso. It's MindArk's advertising, not a PP, so that speaks volumes. It doesn't matter what type of agreement that MA and David Post arrived at to make this happen, MA should not take this as a license to favor one planet over another with regard to where new players should start just because Next Island is now considered an Outpost.
ROFL! You are completely wrong dude ... as usual ... Now let OZ alone. NI is my favorite. I love it much more than all other PP.
