Next Island's backstory

There's been an update to the Next Island site, which now contains a page containing the backstory:

We’ve all heard the rumors of the scientific marvels of New Elysium, but I was unsure of what I would find on the South Pacific island colony. These Elysians have put out a call to any citizen, of any nation who has the skills, abilities and courage that would fit the profile of a scientific pioneer, to join the creative research community of New Elysium.

I was warmly greeted by Becky Hoffmann when I arrived. Becky told me she’d been a schoolteacher back home in Indiana, but although she loved introducing new concepts to her students, she was restricted by politics, budget cuts and state exams. In New Elysium, she spent her days introducing new ideas to potential recruits, like me.

Becky first led me to the labs, where a group of Elysian scientists worked to unlock all the properties of praetonium, just one of the new elements they’ve discovered. The light-filled, airy rooms held all the clutter of a cutting-edge laboratory, along with many tools and equipment I couldn’t recognize.

“Praetonium may be our greatest contribution to humankind!” Dr. Liu told me, putting down his pipette and test tube to shake my hand. “We’ve not even begin to uncover all the uses, but with such incredible tensile strength, the possibilities are endless!”

“We all think our research is the most important,” a dark-haired woman said, coming into the room “But our work in genetics really can’t be ignored. If we’re able to isolate and modify certain risk factors, we’ll be able to rid the world of cancer and dangerous disease. Imagine how much more we could accomplish with longer lifespans! Oh, sorry, hello, I’m Mariana De La Cambia, from the genetics lab.”

“Mari, really...” Liu began. Becky led me away as the two doctors re-engaged in a long-standing argument.
