Nintendo president Satoru Iwata last week might have said that Nintendo 3DS wasn’t the final name for the company’s upcoming 3D-infused handheld, but a recent trademark filing seems to suggest otherwise. Or at least, it leaves open the strong possibility that the device will go by the 3DS title that’s been bestowed upon it since it was first revealed. The sharp eyes over at Silicon Era picked up on the trademark filing, which not only includes Nintendo 3DS and N3DS, but also 3DSPlay and 3DSWare. The inclination is to think that these last two items will be the equivalent of Nintendo’s Wii Play mini-game collection and their DSiWare downloadable games store, but that’s just a guess at this point. Whenever it comes to these kinds of filings, it’s always tough to tell if the companies are snatching up names because they plan to use them or just to prevent other companies from using them for their own projects. Iwata said that the 3D-capable DS’s real name would be revealed soon. If only there were a massive industry event coming up soon.
