Private soc forums

  1. I'm looking for ways to make soc forums/ website independant of a single "owner" . Our soc website had to close when the owner lost interest in entropia, and our subforum on EF fell into disuse partly because both the mods became inactive, so it was no longer possible for new members to sign up.

Currently we have a forum hosted by freebb3.com. Not ideal, but, crucially it means the forum won't be lost if the owner loses interest/ gets struck by lightning/ loses his internet connection/ whatever; partly because there are no fees to pay; partly because, we have found that an admin, appointed by the "owner" has exactly the same powers that the owner has (including the power to appoint other admins), so , as long as we have two active admins, there's no problem if one goes AWOL

Besides , I'm a fricking anarchist. It cuts across the grain to invest all that power in any given individual, even if that individual is me! lol

I wonder if you guys can come up with any creative solutions?

    Hi jaywalker,

It is possible to appoint more than one moderator to a usergroup / private forum. So in case you are worried about things depending on a single person, this can be sidestepped in this way :)

Please let me know if you would be interested in having a private forum created in this manner.

    :tiphat:

  3. Thank you. Right now I am just looking into the options. There is some talk in my Soc about starting our own website again. If it turns out that others are prepared to put some work into this (i.e. not leaving everything to me!) then we might run with this idea, but there is still this ownership issue to deal with.

Now, I'm wondering if you- or anyone- could come up with some kind of group ownership deal, where it really doesn't matter which member of that group pays the fees so long as they get paid? And/or where the group could elect a new "owner", so to speak, in the event of the original vanishing (our Soc has had such problems with vanishing leaders, that i really don;t trust anyone- self included- not to follow suit! )

    Hey again, jay,

Firstly, there's no fees involved. We offer the private forums free of charge. (Tips are appreciated, but by no means neccessary).

As for ownership, I'd think that having 2 or maybe 3 people as admins of the group ought to keep you covered. Should all of them drop off the face of the earth, I'm sure the remaining members can sort something out, and I'm more than happy to help them out if this ever should happen.

  5. A private soc forum for Fresh & Funky would be much appriciated. =)
I'm currently in the middle of convincing my socmates to start 'hanging out' here on EP, and a soc forum would get me one step closer! :D

  6. Hi again :)

I was actually thinking about the following offer:
It's just an idea atm. But i was thinking that other Socs might also appreciate if the ownership problem could be somehow resolved. It's pretty daft if a whole group has to up sticks and move on, becuse one crucial member no longer comes online, but that's all to often the case.

    PM has been sent :)

In the meantime, should anyone else be interested in a private/soc forum of their own, or are interested in the hosting options mentioned, please give me a shout :)

    Nice service and thanks

Brainstormers forum is up and running

It might be an idea to do a step by step sticky thing on how to join a private group. It would save a lot of typing.

  9. Thx for the forum guys!
Hopefully this will get my soc off their bums and start posting there to! :D
