So was musing this one during my last post. Do we actually have any environmental effects/features other than fall damage? We don't even have any weather except for on Toulan. Here are some thoughts on how env effects could be used.

Noisy areas: Can't hear mobs attacking you

Underwater caves: OK not really environmantal but essentially this would be a bit like being in space, i.e. you have 3 axis of movement cause you can swim up and down too. Might be kinda fun to have a mission or something relating to this. Swim through a cave system that is a little monria esk I guess but full of rippersnappers.

Space Caves: Kinda like a large asteroid where everything is aranged in 3 dimension inside it. This would be like the underwater caves I mentioned before. You would go in using a ship and shoot space mobs or...

No Oxygen: need a space suit or helmeted (fully enclosed) armour with oxygen generator/tank (generator would be more futuristic) attachment and mini thruster (various types, different speeds). This would allow you to use a standard weapon in space but move around in the same way that you fly a space ship. This would allow smaller space caves and smaller space mobs. It would also allow for missions where you, for example, fly around/inside (think starwars) a large damaged space ship and effect repairs on damaged systems. These would fix up in the same way as vehicles fix up when you repair them ie change in model/texture depending on percent fixed.

Interdiction fields: There is a lot of electromagnetic interference in this area, no electricity based weapons will work. Player has to fall back on classic Mele (not energy blades) or stuff like Rocktropia shotguns to be able to hunt in this area.

Poisonous Gas: There are dangerous fumes in this area. Player must wear full cover helmeted armour at all times. Failing to do so will cause slow damage to occur over time till for the duration helmet for example is removed.

Radioactive areas: 2 options, player takes slow damage while ever in this area or some sort of radiation suit can be worn. Additionally radioactive areas could be small clumps and invisible unless player has a Geiger counter either worn or equipped. This would either show areas via a HUD or on the map

Dark areas: player will need a flashlight. either as a gun attachment or hand held. This opens an interesting idea for collaboration. I particularly like the idea of a mission instance for ubers where they must enter a dark area with another player who is under level 5 or something who's job it is to hold the flashlight. Some nice side effects of this are you may get new players who are experienced in the mission and get recommended to other players as being reliable. It's a good way to get people talking too and talking/making friends is what makes people stay in the game.

Extreme Heat/cold: Slow damage over time unless in enclosed cabin vehicle or using armour/buff with heat protection. Generally with such areas of course there would have to be a benefit to hunting/mining/being there to offset the disadvantage. This could be adjusted loot or unique mobs/resources or something.

Harsh weather: Strong gusts of wind for example that throw you around some or effect visability. We already have some visibility effecting stuff like mist and rain but nothing that has a real effect.

  3. Are you going to start eating nutrio bars to allow yourself to not get hunger damage? Will drinking some rocktropia enmatters feed your thirst before you get dehydration damage or will you need to use some other stackable for that purpose?
