Make no mistake about it: The 3DS is Nintendo's next handheld platform. According to Nintendo America President Reggie Fils-Aime: "We have ideas of what we want to bring to the consumer that we can’t do with the current [Nintendo DSi]...The Nintendo 3DS for us is our next handheld platform.” In the same interview with Business Week, Fils-Aime goes on to compare the launch of the 3DS to the transition between the GameBoy and the Nintendo DS, so if you're thinking the 3DS is just a cheap gimmick that won't go anywhere, Reggie disagrees with you. Nintendo's history, of course, is rife with both ground-breaking, beloved consumer electronics and cheap gimmicks that don't go anywhere. The latter subset includes Nintendo's last foray into the 3D portable space, the Nintendo Virtual Boy. We shall, of course, see where the 3DS fits into the scheme of things; we expect to hear more about the 3DS at E3 in June.
