Scanning lifeforms with the scanner

  1. Worthwhile? I picked one up to play with it knowing I could sell it back minus the decay...got a couple skillups in Biology and animal scanning...is scanning useful for the skillups? Any point to it?

It seems to work only once on a given creature, judging by the animation (only glows the first time) and the 2 pec decay does not happen after the first use on an animal.

  2. There are many people who do scan for the skill gains. Personally though I find the whole idea to be tedious, even if it is AFK scanning :)

skilll gains from the scanner were more productive before the "scan once - wait five minutes" mechanic was introduced. the scan skills themselves have always been mostly useless, but some of the side skills have benefit in other professions.

even today, it's sometimes useful to scan someone. for example, if someone if offering to colour your clothes and all their attributes are less than 10, there is a high likihood that they may be trying to take advantage of you.

  4. hmm, good points. I know in some games, looking at someone's equipment was considered something one should ask permission to be polite, but it's hard to be subtle about pointing a green glowing box at someone. Granted it would point out a scammer but also risk insulting a reputable tradesperson, then again they would probably understand being careful...

Good to know it's a 5 minute deal on scanning a critter. I timed 1 and 2 and 3 minutes but didn't experiment further. Sounds like something I could work on over time though.

  5. In most cases I ask permission before scaning someone. As you pointed out, it's polite to ask.
