Styling issues on EntropiaPlanets

    Hi,

After last week's upgrade, we have seen quite a few issues reported that are related to the layout of the forum, mostly seen when using an older browser (particularly IE6 and IE7).

The issues are known issues with the new vBulletin platform (which I have to admit I was not aware of, or I would have postponed the upgrade a bit longer), but they will be addressed. A new patch containing bugfixes for a few of the registered issues has recently been released, and I'm now waiting for the style we use to be upgraded to the new version.

In the meantime, I have done some more testing, and to the best of my knowledge, if you would be able to upgrade to IE8 or FireFox, most of the problems ought to dissappear. There will be remaining issues, which are most likely the result of some custom porting I did on some of the modifications we use, and I will try and address those during the next few days.

I'm really sorry that the new forum might be giving some of you a lesser experience, but things ought to be addressed by the developers of the vBulletin platform. As soon as fixes become available that address some of the issues, I will of course try and put them in place.

    :tiphat:

  2. The black area right of the header image and the search box shifting over the buttons when you make the browser window small enough are not an "old browser" issue, but an effect of two sided floats in combination with a liquid layout.

I have said it before, and i repeat it here once again: Get rid of the liquid layout!!
Pick a fixed width and stick to it, liquid layouts bring a lot of aspects you have to be aware of, and are nothing for someone who is new to website layouts.

Hardly anyone makes "fully liquid" layouts today, there is almost always a hidden fixed width area somewhere inside, to deal with the worst problems, like the one you have here with the main menu.

The great majority of the layout problems reported are definitly due to IE6 and IE7 being poorly implemented for vBulletin 4.

We're far from the only ones experiencing them.

  4. Yes, but i was addressing the layout problems i have in IE8 @ 1366x768

The search field should either be float: left, too, or a div leaving some space for it must be wrapped around the other menu items.

The lack of width of the header image is not a vB issue either... but hey, if you want me to stop reporting things, just let me know...

  5. Chop a few words out and it's true for the whole internet:
majority of the problems are definitely due to IE6 and IE7 being poorly implemented

Hasn't Microsoft even admitted IE6 sucks and nobody in their right mind should be using it anymore? Well, maybe not in exactly those words.

As for the other comment about "liquid layouts", I think you have it backwards! Any decent site is using liquid layouts nowadays. There's nothing worse that a site designed for too narrow a screen being viewed on a widescreen monitor.

And what's a few minor bugs anyway? If you play Entropia, you're used to bugs... and if not, what are you doing here anyway? :D

I notified the company we bought the skin from about some of the issues we are facing.

Some of them I can sort myself, but seeing they will soon release an updated skin which would overwrite whatever changes I made myself, I figured having them put in the changes will be the better way to go. Apologies for an inconvenience caused.

While not technically an issue, here's a quick note that I'll be doing some maintenance on the layout of the posts. Particularly, I'll be working on the bits showing your avatar, flag, and other pieces of info.

As a result, you might see things shift or look weird every now and then, but this is all known, and intentional.

Sorry for any inconvenience caused by this.
