I was crying with laughter... it's so true. > Of course despite all this being true I have to agree, half the fun is getting it all "just right" and figuring it all out. I think this is why Elite seems to have so many people building their own custom interfaces and so forth. TBH it is very in keeping with David Brabens' original revolutionary (at the time) idea about games in the 80's i.e. that a game should be something you keep coming back to, not something that is over after 10 levels and easy to pickup. Sure it CAN be that but I think in the 21st Century what they have made is something akin to a bit of software that you have to learn (like any other bit of complex software) but it just happens to be a game in this case. Funilly enough there are worse games to set up for VR though. I have one where you have a really bad interface and you have to set it up in VR (even though you have already configured for non VR) oh and while you do it your spaceship is spinning... ... it's like a race to see if you get the controls set up or vomit first! ROFL! I love that video. Currently I'm exactly in the situation often to scream: "WHAAAAT THE FUCK IS THAT? AAAAAAAAAHRG!!! NOOOOOOOO!" But it's wonderful. I wish FRONTIER would release a version for PSVR soon!
LOL yeah! But nowadays it's a bit better than in 1985. At the C64 I started as "Commander Jameson" with a weak "Cobra Mk. II". Same situation: No clue what to do, completely plan- and helpless. But yes, it's correct: One who invests time and effort to learn more about this freak-game may become able to enjoy it for years.
Wow. I need to buy this game, a new PC, a joystick, and a VR set. I wanted to try the game before, but this video definitely sold it. Loved the humour in it (my favourite part being him zipping past the "bye, lol" planet). Ya'all should come over and help me paint my new house during the last week of May so I can save the money for the painter and spend it on PC goodness instead :D
Well, why not? Depends on weather (my car doesn't own a roof) and on the amout of beer you are willing to invest. I could bring my Playstation with the flat version of Elite. Just to have a first look at it. I have never been in Sweden so far. Would be a nice chance. Probably others jump onto the train. How many folks do you need to replace the painter?
I think it is a good video to sell the game to someone. I mean, if someone sees this video and thinks "I want to play that" then they will defo enjoy it. From the community posts I can see a lot of people go a bit nuts over building their own special Elite Dangerous interfaces. I saw one even where they made a chair that moved in response to the game! Another impressive thing is the level of effort and design that has gone into the player built trading tools and such forth. They didn't just make say "mytwopecs.com" they made an entire infrastructure for collection and relaying of information that can be tapped into by anyone who wants to make something that uses the information. AFAIK most sites use that system. I guess it could be compared slightly to the global tracking thing people do in Entropia, but instead of the data feeding just one site, it feeds a network that is free for anyone to access with their own stuff. If you are interested, I think it was called EDDN (Elite Dangerous Data Network) IIRC. Yes defo the ultimate game for anyone who enjoys MAPPING ALL THE BUTTONS haha but indeed be prepared to think "I don't even know what that EVEN VAGUELY DOES!" https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/b91e31bd-f38f-4245-a9c0-f8ac08bc34d8#r1la-p_AsM.copy
It was tongue in cheek, more than anything, but if you're serious, I'd happily provide beer, whisky, and food. I'm in Denmark, though. 20 minutes north of Copenhagen. It's not a big place, and I figured I'd be able to cover a lot of ground on my own. The main thing will be covering stuff with tape. The floors will be sanded within the same week, so we can afford to be a bit more careless there :)
LOL! Sounds funny. Denmark than, not Sweden - wich will shorten the distance dramatically. I have to admit that my experiance is limited to France and Italy so far. Oh ... and one short trip to London. Denmark is part of the to-do list since ages. So I say: Deal! Sunday May 27 late afternoon at your place? I like the idea.
Be aware that it is a slow motion game. Sometimes you have to lean back. The longest distance I had so far was 600k Ls. This took ~20 minutes IRL. I made a rough graph of it (RL min/game distance):
Let me get back to you. I just have been allocated to a new project at work. I did warn my PM I might need some additional time off, but have not booked it yet. I also have another painter drop by to give me a quote (If I can get it for a good price, I'd prefer having the work done by a professional, but let's see). Thanks again for the offer, though, and I will definitely get back to you :)
