I am definatly not up to speed on all the tech stuff but been watching this thread out of curiosity.

Because of the ever changing and improving techonology I had always thought that in a situation with that kind of budget it would still be better to spend 2-4k on current mid-high lvl components, and then spend another 1-2k each year staying up to speed. Is the difference in price between a 2k, 4k, & 6k system really going to bring that much more benefit? esp now that you have to wait another 3 months to have the 'best'

I fully understand the 'fun' of building the bigger and better and best you can, and maybe thats where the benefit comes in more than the actual benefit from the system?

It does sound like a ton of fun, and so hope you understand my questions without any offense :)

I think with 7k dollars I could buy a new gaming computer (low end) an unlimited Assassin and an unlimited set of armor (Jag, Emine, similar)

Good luck with the new system, it will be fun reading what you do with it,

Awesome rig.. just to let you in on a bit of let down here in Entropia.. it seems that EU does not support single cards with multi gpu's.. Have been trying to get MA to fix this but they seem to be having a problem with it.. It could also be related to my vid card too but from what I got from them, it seems to be a problem with only cards that have more then one gpu running on it..

  3. Hi Razer,

Will do once the new components are released I will update the thread.

    Hi Narfi,

I have a ok knockabout rig atm, Intel i7 930, 470GTX Nvidia, 6Gb memory, 1Gb SATA-3. The goal was to build something out of the ordinary, something extreme at the bleeding edge of technology.

I understand what your saying about Entropia. I have already a budget assigned for Entropia which involves slowly building up over the first year to craft my own gear. Since I do not trash anything to TT and sell most things in 500+ ped stacks, this will take some time to fill storage to make appropriate sized stacks (100 stacks ~ 5k usd worth of deposits, 5 months)

I intend to use the TT weapons, UnL CB5, Nemesis & Vigi till such time I have enough deposited to start crafting from the bottom up, focusing on hunting & mining crafted items mainly as I really enjoy both activities.

I mainly play with small mobs for now while loot building.

At the moment I am going through 350 PED > Storage playing each day using TT weapons & UnL CB5 which I can sustain until the next month's deposit. Returns have been nice and yesterday being my 3rd day of hunting I scored a 108 PED global on a Corn Old :wavespin:

Since I intend to mainly use everything I craft, this will take some time to reach my goals in crafting levels 2 - 3 years. I am a returning player with new goals and a new perspective on Entropia, exploring things again as a newbie :D

    Hey Nor Alien,

Thanks heaps for the info, this is one thing I was worried about, as I understand it, SLI doesn't work either. I wonder if they will bring a fix to this as I am really looking forward to trying out the 3D 270 degree vision that this card supports through the use of 3 monitors (Later goal to add an additional 2 monitors from right and left side viewing)

I guess we will have to wait and see.

    Cheers,
    Viper

Np.. What I got from them is that they are not even close to getting the sli and dual gpu system working yet. The funny thing is that when vu 10 first came out it was supported then.. I had 85 fps with my 4870 X2 2 gig card.. now I am lucky to get 30 to 40 fps.. :what:

  7. Hi Nor Alien,

Thanks again for the info. I think I am going to pospone building this system until early next year after the next generation of CPUs & Chipsets are released.

I have been doing more reading and found that there are some exciting things to come in the releases that will improve performance of a gaming rig greatly.

There is no rush my side to build this new gaming rig as the one I have now runs Entropia just fine and still has 2 years to go before she turns 3yrs old (End of life, EBay selloff)

I have cancelled the order I placed for the new Case, PSU and monitor pending the new releases and pending MA making Entropia dual GPU ready.

For now I will concentrate the funds into Entropia and rebudget next year for the new system :)

  9. The quest is still on to build a bleeding edge machine, as a small update, the BMW case will no longer be used as I have had to downsize two rooms in my house to one with a relative moving in.

This project is on hold until the release of the 2011 processors & motherboards.

However I have decided to go with a rackmount solution using the following:

    32RU Tall Network Cabinet - 600 x 800 mm - 007 ~ $ 1180 inc gst. delivered
    http://www.rackworld.com.au/detail.asp?pid=2587&cid=1051,1063

The computers will be housed in new rackmount casing:

    Antec 4U22ATX 4U Rackmount Chassis ~ $ 200 each
Inc. 7x Fixed Hard Drive Bays
    Supports ATX & EATX Motherboards

  10. Hey Viperstrike,

I had missed this thread, but now that I've read it I strongly recommend you some tweaking in the power front. I wouldn't turn this rig on without adding a UPS. If I were to build this for myself, apart from adding at least one UPS for this rig alone, I'd have at least a couple of monitors and would combine the 3TB drive with two different tiers of disks:

Tier 1: Two RAID 1 racks of two disks each, being hot-swappable Seagate ST3600057SS 600 GB. A good dedicated RAID controller would be more than nice. These disks spin at 15K, not 7.2K. I'd use one rack for gaming/hobby applications & data and the other one for work/scientific apps&data. With a good RAID controller making backups of each rack is pretty easy, either declaring one of the disks 'inactive' and removing it or by adding a third disk to the rack (either permanently but only for back-ups or temporarily).

Tier 2: Provided a Ultra320 SCSI controller, four RAID 0 Seagate ST3300655LW 300 GB where I'd set up whichever high-performance virtual disks I'd need; I could also go RAID 1/5 for redundancy, but we're talking SCSI here...

So we'd be talking some 11 hard disks here: your 3TB, plus 4 to 6 Tier 1, plus 4 Tier two. For the average quality of the rig, this would be my minimum quality storage setup. I'm not really into SSDs and RAMDrives but I have this little trick which really works for me: grab a PCIe x1 USB controller, plug two identical 16/32GB USB pendrives and set up Windows to use them to improve system performance. It's pretty cheap and it's worked very well with my oldest active rig (just FYI, it's the only one using 40cm fans in my 'playroom').

Hope it helps, or at least gives some ideas.
    Cheerz!

EDIT: Geez, I forgot! For the disks, I'd use a different, additional power, some 850W+.
Just a matter of personal taste.

  11. Hey Ordaz,

    Thanks for the tips :)

I will be looking at the disk arrays in more detail down the track and will take your ideas into consideration.

The situation has somewhat changed my end with what seems half my family moving back into my house :alien:
So now I have to cater for mum, my younger brother, older sister and maybe even dad if I can convince him to move back in, on the network I am building up (2 workstations and 1 dedicated server my end)

For now dad is connected via 20Mbit VPN (Or will be in the 6th of July) using - http://shop.techbuy.com.au/p/152622/NETWORKING_FIREWALLS/Cisco/RV120W-A-AU.aspthrough
    to my Cisco 867W.

I intend to use the dedicated server for general networking, general storage, print & scan server, etc.
1 workstation (current system) setup as a web server (More for hobbiest purposes than commercial)
1 ultimate gaming machine (To be built) for Entropia and any other games i can throw at it.

For the ultimate gamester machine, it needs to be able to handle very fast sustained read & write speeds, moreso read. I was thinking of using the SSD's in a raid scenario, stripping them in RAID-0. However I will review what you have suggested when the time comes to build this machine (End of this year or early next) and make a decision to which way to jump.

I have chewed a little into my 7k budget from buying the rack, rack cases and a new bed which all has come to ~ 3.8k, so a little saving needs to be done again my side ;)

The UPS is a definite must, I am considering going for a 3kVA (2700W) APC Smart UPS ~ $ 2200 to support all 3 machines once this one is built ... again a matter of saving for a 2-3 months to do this.

    Link - http://shop.techbuy.com.au/p/36333/UPS_RACKMOUNT/APC/SUA3000RMI2U.asp

Although I hear the EATON brand also comes highly recommended for UPS & power management.

I don't want to go too overkill in setting this all up on the $ side of the equation, but we shall see how it all turns out.

Anyhow thanks again for the advise, it is much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Viper

  12. With additional family moving into my place, the goal has changed somewhat.
I now intend to build 2 relatively high end spec PCs, however not as expensive as the system in the OP.

The new target price will be under $ 4000 per machine, with upgradability.

Here is a rough indication of the new specification:

    To be released Q4 - M/B with 2011 Socket, 6 dimm sup for 24Gb+, minimum 2 SAS ports, 4+ 16X Express lanes.
To be released Q4 - Processor 2011 Socket, highest available though not the extreme addition.

12Gb memory in each machine. (1 will run Win7 Pro 64 the other Windows Server 2008 R2)
Asus Nvidia 570GTX in each machine with 1280Mb DDR-5
On M/B Audio in one machine, the other will have a Creative HD sound card.

SAS OCZ 200Gb in each machine connected to one of the motherboard SAS ports
    Blueray Reader/Writer

Antec Rackmount casing as specified above.
750W Corsair PSU, silver rated for energy effeciency - All that is required imho.

27" Asus LCD for each machine

And the other general bits and bobs ~ 300-400 bucks worth, eg. Wireless K/B, Mouse, etc

I will create a new thread once the Socket 2011 Motherboards & Processors are released.

  13. Hi Ordaz,

I have completed orders for the rackmount from RWS, the Antec casing x 2 so far and have purchased a UPS.
The rest I will do at the start of next year once I save up a bit more.

    The UPS I purchased is the 2200VA 1980W APC - $ 1990
