Next Island is falling apart at the seams... I blame the little things, lack of SERVER/BOARD MOD, info, Greece, .... i could go on... not wanting to rip on the game... just draw attention to the fact, there are too damn many spam posting on the boards, and now we have a sex site? that should have lasted for 10 min. before it was properly dealt with. I am a Mod for Civplayers.com, and I dont put up with crap like this. not on my watch. this needs to be fixed asap.
been saying that for a long time, good luck getting them to listen... your post will be put on the mile long stack of similar posts and be forgotten/ignored. to the forum mods, you know, instead of letting people choose their own password - initially - you could have a password auto-generated and e-mailed to the people when they register, this way you can say bye bye to the spammer that haunts this forum as he most likely is using a forum spammer which automatically registers, clicks activation link, and then posts - all fully automated... now don't ask me why i know :p but i am pretty sure that would solve your problem once and for all. (no i haven't done it myself, but i found out how it works when i was trying to find alternate ways to get traffic)
preferably fix it BEFORE the forum URL ends up on some list over "forums that are spammable by automated submitters", when that happens you won't see 5 or 6 posts per week, you will be flooded daily
Just so you all know there are only 2 people on the site that have Mod/Admin authority. Meg and myself. We are not logged into the site 24/7. When things are noticed and caught we take care of them. So until then spam postings are handled when they are noticed by myself of Meg. I also highly recommend that when you see a spam post to report it. I am more likely to get the 'Reported Post' email before I notice it on the site...
Right you are. A forum mod can only do his job sufficiently if he gets help from the forum community. Instead of blaming them, report every one spam message you see. And sure, there might be a better system to recognize spam msgs, but it's hard to automate.
What image verification system are you using? Currently the best one out there is ReCAPTCHA -- it remains the best because there is a team working constantly on updates -- but the downside is it takes admin costs. I use it on my sites and overall I do not have daily spammers but I do get registered accounts every few months that prompt me to check into ReCAPTCHA for an update and make it happen. Other image verification systems suck, to put it bluntly. I used many others before going this route and found many spammers were able to access my public forums as if there were nothing in place.
*removed the link* ^^ image verification will not stop the guy you know... i don't mean to sound rude, but when i log in and see a post with the topic "gay rape" i get really disgusted, and there is a way to fix it, and image verification alone is not a solution
As of right now we will only be using the default Image Verification tool that comes with vBulletin. When the forum gets large enough were we get 20+ spam posts a day and it becomes way to much for even 2 or 3 mods to handle then I will push for the ReCAPTCHA investment.
got it, i will continue to report spam posts then and wait and see. removing my link in my previous post so i don't give people stupid ideas on things they shouldn't be doing :) *edit* however, if there is a not too complicated way to add auto-generated and e-mailed passwords when people registers you really should consider it. why pay for recaptcha when you can fix it for free, and fix it before you reach 20+ spam posts a day? just my thoughts ^^ not saying because i want to sound like a know-it-all or anything, just saying because i really like the forum and want what's best for it ;)
You dont need to push for any sort of investment. It should be free. vBulletin Manual I havnt ever had to pay for the ReCAPTCHA service. Its not bulletproof, but you should see daily spammers reduced by almost 100%.
Easy solution, make me a mod :) No more spam, no more complaints, nothing that I do not entirely agree with will be allowed :) As a matter of fact any post that doesn't have my express permission before being posted will be allowed :) Actually just those who pay the 1ped/word "tax" will be allowed to post :) Man I would be the most hated mod of all time :)
Make me a mod as well. Watch the hate flow in like a river as the in crowd pronounced doom and ruin on this board!!!! I wont tax per word though, but each snide or abusive remark will cost a dollar, taken from a prepaid account folks must always have a positive balance on in order to participate! I'll split the profits with you 70/30 -- right down the middle! Actually this sums up everything I think I need to say about myself in one beautiful video. My main concern was when i sent a brand new player to the site <A good old skool player looking for a home>, i was messaged back with "mabey this is not for me". Kinda sux.... With Civiliazation 5, I am a current Admin with the abilities of server and message board mod. The CivPlayers MP League is the league site. The game Civ 5, sold a flawed game, and I quit. But i am still true to the league, it was not their fault. They have been there for all of the Civ games. So from time to time I am able to volunteer my time, and help "watch over" the league... There are too many things that need work done here, You guys need help. May not be a bad idea to implement something similar. Or possibly just a button reading "Vote to be Moved to Trash". coding either way lol. Really I just want to keep playing a game that i like... just wish there were not soo many hurdles... Keep at it, do what you can, do your best, and have fun 8) Right?
We're aware of the spam posts, and as soon as I get a flag or catch an ad, I do delete it. There are a lot of things I do at NI besides forum moderation, though, so there are times when I'm not logged in or available to delete it. Enzo does a really amazing job of staying on top of spam, and we really try to respond as quickly as possible. Thank you guys for helping by flagging junk posts whenever you see it!
we know, but wouldnt it be better to try and stop the spammer instead of just letting him keep comming and delete the posts AFTER we had to read topics like "gay rape" and other repulsive stuff?
