I love the name 'Arkadia' - it reminds me of several things, but most of all it somehow drags my mind back to my old Dune and TombRaider days. Dune, because of the mystery but also because of the House of Atraides and the Planet Arrakis - the name Arkadia could as well have been a part of Dune. And TombRaider because my hero Lara Croft (I'm sure I have a hidden Lara Croft in me ... somewhere ... I'M SURE)... is a treasure hunter and she and I have been exploring the ancient world together for YEARS now! But Arkadia, Arcadia, (Αρκαδία), or Arcady is a region of Greece in the Peloponnesus. It takes its name from the mythological character Arcas and I wonder how and why the name was chosen? Does it have another history behind it we don't know about ? Enlightening us
Very interesting question Lykke, but I can't answer just yet, might have to wait for an interview to be published round here somewhere soon :) What do others think of the name?
A bit different spelling, but Arcadia exists in one of my favourite adventure games: The Longest Journey (& sequel Dreamfall).. So the name alone made me happy! :)
I feel ya :) that was the very first thing that popped into my mind while I was reading lykkes post. ahh... thinking about it makes me want to play it again :) now how do I make an 11 year old game work on vista...
Ahh yes :) I see. But the word itself *arcadia* / *arkadia* does that have a meaning other than from the ancient greece mythology?
Didn't they talk about Archeology? In Swedish that's Arkeologi, so from my point Arkadia sounds close to a archeology world
Check our review of Abandonware. As for the name, it reminds me of arcades. The place where we spent countless hours as kids pumping quarters into Mortal Kombat, Mad Dog McCree, and that game that was a helicopter simulator where you sat in a chair that actually revolved.
Hmm ... it's a big mall in Warshaw/Poland. New Yorker. quick translation: Arkadia is the name of Megamall settled in Warshaw ... total area of 287k squaremeters ... 220 shops. 22 restaurants, Multiplex cinema with 15 cinemas called Cinema City ... selling area is 103k squaremeters wich is a third of all ... it's easteurope's biggest shopping center ... opened in 2004 ... 4.3k parking spots and many international shops ... names: look above Question is: do we have a landing deck for VOTL's?
But serious: Arkadia ... as the region of Greece ... in the past ... was called the land of the "Golden Age". (Does any bells ring?????) A land where ppl can live in peace, unloaded by exhausting work and social pressur. In Germany we have another name for that. It is called "Schlaraffenland". Fried chickens fly to your mouth, your main job is sleeping ... Breughel the elder made a painting: I'm afraid this will not happen. But it sounds like some more relaxed envoirement. Dunno ...
Arkadia is a suburb in Harare Zimbabwe where all the "Gofals" live. You tune? These okes have the bestest smalack humour you ever jorled. But dont cross these lighties, they will balaker you up.
Arkadia (Arcadia) reminds me of Resident Evil - the place where is a shelter for everyone, free of the T-virus...
i like the name. im going to have a punt at the emphasis of name being "ark", with reference to either the lifeboat of fauna or the vessel carrying artifacts of great power, being of alien origin.
I realise that I'm late to this thread, but the name "Arkadia" makes be think of amusement arcades (in common with what a few people have said). I once suggested on another forum that as part of a cheap form of entertainment Calypso could have similar amusement arcades (with games being provided by third party providers) where people could meet up and challenge each other. The benefit to the third party providers would be a cut of the micro-payments for each avatar to play - I think I suggested no more than 10 pecs (not Peds) a time - to keep it as a cheap means of socialising while actually doing something. As Calypso shows no sign of taking on this idea perhaps Arkadia might, if it is in keeping with the planet, of course.
