Mission Welcome to Crystal Center Walkthrough Flowchart.jpg

Welcome to Crystal Center

Arthur

Welcome to Crystal Center is the first tutorial that a player receives after they’ve created their avatar and started playing Next Island. My goal for the tutorial was to add some humor and characterization to the beginning of the game while giving the player a lot of useful information.

We didn’t have the capability for NPCs to respond differently to every player option, so I had to balance giving the player the feeling of choices in how they interacted with the NPCs with the reality of how many outcomes we could build into the text tree.

Welcome to Crystal Center

Quest Log: Welcome to Crystal Center Get information from Arthur about where you are, why you’re here, and what you should be doing. Be sure to visit him if you need more help or have another question, the AUTT can be disorienting to even the worldliest explorers.

Objectives: Find Arthur Find 2922-Fyodor

Arthur:

Hello there! Can you hear me? Oh! Sorry to yell so loudly, sometimes Newlanders are a bit deaf when coming out of the AUTT, that’s the Alternate Universe Transportational Technology or that platform you were standing on. Don’t worry though, the effects wear off…after awhile.

How do you do? My name is Arthur and it’s my job to greet Newlanders and help them settle into our island ways. Welcome to Crystal Center (playername)!

Player: (Option One)

Thanks, Arthur. (Wow, he seems so nice!)

Player: (Option Two)

Thanks, Arthur. (I’d better not make any sudden movements…this guy seems like a total weirdo!)

Arthur:

I’m so glad you Second Wavers have made it through the AUTT safely! You see it didn’t work as intended when we First Wavers arrived on Next Island. It started out well from the platform back on Earth, but when we got here some supplies and people had gone missing.

It’s been a year now and although we’ve made progress building the camp some of the First Wave is still missing. We’re very worried, but with the arrival of you Second Wavers we should be able to track down the missing Elysians and work together to see the Elysium Project come to fruition.

Player: (Option One)

Elysium Project?

Player: (Option Two)

First Wave?

Player: (Option Three)

Second Wave?

Arthur:

Ah! Forgive me! In my excitement at seeing you I seem to have gotten ahead of myself. I’m afraid I’ve been a bit muddled ever since the incidents started to occur. Some Islanders believe them to be sabotage, but I can’t imagine that anyone in our party could be responsible…or could they? I’m just not sure…

Perhaps it would be best if you went and talked with Fyodor. He’s the robot historian of Next Island so he should be able to give you a much better picture of the development of the colony.

Player: (Option One)

Sure, I’ll go find Fyodor.

Arthur:

Wonderful! I will go ahead and mark Fyodor’s location on your Map and Radar. He will appear on the Radar, that device at the bottom right of your screen, as a green dot with a rotating green circle around it. You can find him on the Map by hitting “M” on your keyboard or choosing the map icon, it resembles a planet, at the top right of the screen.

If you ever forget the details of what I’ve asked you to do you can view them in your Quest/Mission Log, it resembles a scroll with X marking the spot, at the top right of your screen.

Player: (Option One: Returns to earlier point in text tree)

Wait, I’ve got some questions!

Player: (Option Two)

Got it. (End Mission)

Player: (Option Two: From earlier in the text tree)

Wait, I’ve got some questions!

Arthur:

How may I assist you in finding your way?

Player: (Option One) How do I make money?

Arthur:

Ah, yes! A very important question. The most straightforward way of making money is to sell loot in the Auction Listings, which can be found in Terminal Services in the square just outside of Arrival Alley as well as around the island. There are a few ways of obtaining loot. If you are extremely lucky you may find some lying on the ground, but it usually doesn’t sell for much. You’d be better served learning a trade like hunting, mining or crafting which will help you obtain loot that can then be sold on the Auction Listings.

Emmet Murray has volunteered to educate Newlanders in mining, while Helen Venture is giving out hunting lessons, and Malcolm Campbell is showing the basics of crafting. All three of them can be found here in Arrival Alley.

Player: (Option Two)

Is it dangerous here?

Arthur:

Hmmm, that is a matter of perspective. Rest assured that you are safe while in Arrival Alley and Crystal Center. However, when you venture out into the larger world there are some enemies that may attack such as wild boar and papoo. You would be well advised to ask Helen Venture to teach you how to protect yourself. You may also want to purchase a healing kit from the Trade Terminal in Terminal Services. You can find Terminal Services in the square just outside of Arrival Alley.

I don’t want to worry you, but there has been some speculation that the…accidents that have occured weren’t really accidents at all. I can’t bring myself to think that anyone I know could be trying to sabotage Elysium. However, if you’d like to learn more about the people around you I’d recommend visiting Paula Larmer here in Arrival Alley to learn about scanning.

Player: (Option Three)

What’s this clothing that popped up?

Arthur:

That’s the Settler Suit. Every Newlander is given this piece of clothing to wear when they emerge from the AUTT. It tends to disintegrate what they were wearing before. You can’t imagine how chaotic it was before the Settler Suit was created, we had islanders trying to conduct important trade in their underwear.

If you’d like to wear the Settler Suit you should either hit “I” on the key board or choose the item icon in the upper-right of your screen. Then choose the Clothing tab, it looks like a T-shirt. Right click on the Settler Suit and choose Equip from the drop down menu that appears.

Player: (Option Four)

What’s the Elysium Project?

Arthur:

The Elysium Project was founded by David Spencer and the Elysium Alliance with the goal of creating a society absent of war, big corporations and big government. It’ll be a society where ideas and innovation will shape the future. The project began back on Earth, but has been moved here to Next Island after being threatened by some governmental powers that are jealous of our initial success.

I’d recommend talking with Fyodor if you’d like to learn more about the Elysium Project.

Player: (Option Five)

How do I use the menu?

Arthur:

Professor Albert Kardsten is a very good person to talk to if you’d like to learn about the menu system and basic interactions.

Player: (Option One: Returns player to all available questions)

I’ve got more questions.

Player: (Option Two)

I’ll go find Fyodor. (End Mission)
