Controversies[edit]
Sale 2006[edit]
Sale 2010[edit]
In 2010 the database including all content and user accounts has been sold to First Planet Company, the company back then owning and developing Planet Calypso. Additionally the former owner Jason Peterson has been contracted by First Planet Company for administration of the forum now named PlanetCalypsoForum. After some time Jason Peterson created a new forum under the old entropiaforum.com domain. The sale has been heavily critized for various reasons, for example:
- All the content the forum community has created in good faith for the benefit of the community has been sold solely for the personal gain of the forum owner and has been paid with money the same community has deposited to the game.
- What was supposed to be a forum for all planets as well as for all universe content and discussions has been turned into a forum for just one planet.
- User accounts and user created content have been sold from an entity that was supposed to be independent to the company developing the game without any kind of approval or even notice.
Commercial orientation[edit]
Despite striving to showcase a community attitude entropiaforum.com must be considered a purely commnercial project. The original entropiaforum has been bought by Jason Peterson from its original creator Mindbuster in 2006 and its content and user accounts have been sold to First Planet Company in 2010, see above.
Jason Peterson did apply a strict censorship when it came to the discussions of other Entropia Universe community websites to protect his business. He even did not spare himself to appear on other community websites and impose rules on their members what and how to discuss on his websites. <link to post with rules on EP>
Planet Discrimination[edit]
Entropiaforum.com is does not treat all planets equally. Not every planet has it's own forum section, not every planet's newsfeeds are displayed.
Entropia Forum staff does not even seem to have knowledge about what planets are actually in development:
- 01 September 2010: Frontpage article informing about Beladcom's Arabian themed planet on EntropiaPlanets.com: The Princes of Persia come to Entropia
- 21 December 2010: Frontpage article displaying the first video teaser of Beladcom's Arabian themed planet on EntropiaPlanets.com: EntropiaPlanets Exclusive: Beladcom Arabian Planet Teaser
- 15 July 2011: Thread by Entropia Forum staff member JohnCapital on PlanetCalypsoForum: Idea for Arabian type planet
MindArk favoritism[edit]
MindArk, the company developing Entropia Universe, to a large extent support the websites owned and administrated by Jason Peterson and at the same time almost completely ignore other websites no matter whether those have more features, are more up-to-date, have a more active user base, have staff achieving more full-time equivalents or to a larger extent feature an "all-universe" approach. The latter point ("all-universe" approach) might be one of the reason for MindArk's efforts since entropiaforum.com does show a rather restricted "all-universe" approach and rather seems to be focussed on Planet Calypso whose majority shareholder is the MindArk subsidiary company AR Universe AB.
After the relaunch of the official Entropia Universe website (www.entropiauniverse.com) in 2011 the frontpage shows a banner link to entropiaforum.com reading "Visit Entropia Forum" while this or similar options do not seem to exist for other community websites or even offical websites of MindArk's "Planet Partners". Additionally the design of the banner link image being consistent with the design of the rest of the websites suggests that it was created by a MindArk employee or contractor paid with money the Entropia Universe players deposited to the game.
Also MindArk are using entropiaforum.com for running competitions actually designed for the whole Entropia Universe that require players to sign-up on a privately owned commercial website with personal data like their email address. The option to be included in such competitions does not seem to exist for other community orientated websites, and again does not even seem to exist for MindArk's Planet Partners.
Censorship[edit]
Owner misconduct[edit]
Jason Peterson respectively his company Active Ideas is known for Cybersquatting and has been found guilty by the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) in several cases: <links to WIPO cases> More -> Jason Peterson Cybersquatting and Domain sniping.
Jason Peterson has been reported of being in breach of the Entropia Universe EULA (End-User License Agreement) by multiple sources. Notably for buying and utilizing another account/avatar named "Divine Vixen Incarnate" which is strictly forbidden by the EULA. Following this incident members of the Entroia Universe community started to call Jason Peterson "NeoVixen" a combination of his original avatars nickname "Neomaven" and the nickname of the account he bought "Vixen".
